Being a microbiology tech at Grand View is a challenging position
Grand View is one of the few hospitals that functions on its own. They have never merged with ant other health system. Therefor Grand View is a fully functional hospital. In the microbiology lab we perform routine bacteriology using the Vitek ,the Bact T Alert, along with manual testing for some of the fastidious and more resistant organisms. In the 9 years I have been there we have numerous unusual organisms, such as Lactococcus, from a girl that was bit by a rat. For a community hospital Grand View get more than its share of difficult organisms. We techs do alot of research and work well to -gether to the doctor the results needed to treat the patient.
A typical work day ,there are 3 benches however, now we divide the work between 2 techs,  We takes temps of frigs,incubators, instruments. We have a special ana jar devoted to strep screen, they are read in the morning. Specimens left by night shift are plated in. An overdue log is pulled up. Negative blood cultures are reported
the demographics of the blood cultures set by nights and evenings are put into the Bact T Alert computer. The plated bacteriology cultures are read. One tech enters MIC results on 48 hour cultures , problem solves any difficult cultures. The person reading 24 hour plates also sets up new MIC. We perform antigen testing for Campylobacter. Shiga toxin E Colis, C.diff. We also perform ANA's
We read fungus cultures once weekly. The AFB cultures are monitored by the Bact T Alert.  .
We plate incoming specimens as they come in. We read gram smears as specimens are set. We process positive blood cultures as they come off of the Bact T Alert. We perform quality control upon receipt on kits and Vitek cards. We do weekly quality control on Vitek cards, we also do as used quality control on less used Vitek cards. The job is difficult because we are very busy, however, we have less staff. Now the hospital is short about 4 aids and the techs are being expected to fill along with doing our benches.

GVH is not a bad place to work, honestly. It's just a DIFFERENT place to work. Especially for someone not familiar with healthcare, which is sort of a bizarre blend of disaster aid, public relations, politics, a three ring circus and the mob. My observations: 1)They used to have a great pension plan, then it was downgraded to a somewhat good plan, now it's a 403b and a pat on the back. The incentive to stay long term is nil. Maybe that's what they want. Don't know. 2)The previous CEO was a financial wizard, but had the people skills of an angry bison. The current one is smart and approachable, which filters down and makes the atmosphere more livable for everyone. 3)Their PAL system, where you earn time off for every hour on the clock, is awesome. I have never had a request denied for a day off, even on short notice, and still got paid for the day. How many other businesses let you do that? 4)Despite the marginal benefits of it - which their own science proves - you are forced to get a flu shot each year. Personally, I think I should have a say as to what gets injected into my body without the threat of job termination. That's just common decency. 5)There is so much corporate politics that it could be exported, and important decisions are sometimes put off too long. 6)Discipline is meted out according to the infraction, the situation, the day of the week, the ambient temperature, and from what I can tell, the astronomical position of Mars. In other words, one person can get away with something for years, while another will be gone the next day for the same thing. Still haven't figured that out. 7)What department you work in matters. Through one door might be warm and caring, while down the hall it could be January in Minsk. 8)There are a lot of good, competent managers there who lead by example and look out for those under them. Then there are others who couldn't manage free pony rides in the park on a sunny day. Fortunately, there seems to be more of the former than the latter. All in all, quite the adventure.

As of 2023 the current expectation is that despite being understaffed, you must perform the tasks of every missing and then some. Failure to do so gets met with a speech about not being a "team player" when the very same person who's currently telling you what's what wouldn't be able to do the first 5 steps of the job despite picking apart everything all their understaffed department is doing wrong on the daily.

Every department is the same. Everyone is stretched thin. Some departments have, no exaggeration, two people to cover Monday-Friday 7am to 12am. If one of them gets sick the expectation is the other picks up 5 12 hour shifts, and they close 5 hours early. Managers won't cover the shifts. This is the same across the board. Security will be left with one person to watch over the entire hospital. Nurses will be left manning 8+ rooms. Triaged patients will wait 6+ hours before being seen. Charge nurses want to break down on their day from the laundry list of nonsense they're met with. 

The saddest part is - all these people start off with a passion for their patient's care and as the endless tasks, responsibilities, and mistreatment pile on you slowly watch their fortitude crumble.

I still think back to a department head telling a room full of adults that their reward for doing such a good job under a week's worth of immense pressure, critique, and disarray was a single pizza being ordered for a pizza party. It felt like a sick joke. Like we're children.

The bottom line is that the company, across the board, is expecting more done out of less staff. The compensation feels like it's appropriate for middle schoolers, and to top it off you're labeled as some kind of undesirable when you stand up for your co-workers. 

I have worked at GVH several years. There was a time that us employees felt we were paid fairly, we had a good time on the job, worked as a team, moral was high. Quickly things changed.. there are no longer longevity raises, full time hours were decreased from 40 hours to 37 hours ( in only certain departments ) , pay was decreased, weekend rates were taken away. Moral is down to a new low.  Employees are rotated around 4 outpatient centers and the main hospital which makes it difficult to get into a routine and good  flow of work.  They do not pay you for doing all the extra tasks associated with doing other added requirements. It is just expected and taken while those who cant  do them dont have as much stress.   I have been maxed out with no opportunity to advance or make any more money at this Hospital... Side deals are made for positions behind the scenes and favorites are played. We could really use a union at this place to keep things fair in order of seniority .  Vacation,retirement and sick was reduced. You cant use your sick time unless you are out 4 consecutive days in a row. When you go part time you lose all the sick time you had accumulated.   You are written up for being out 4 times in 12 months no matter what the reason,, blizzard, sick, child sick, flat tire etc... There is no compassion for employees anymore and we feel very  unappreciated. Any issues and concerns we have get passed around and fall on deaf ears. GVH has lost a lot of long time experienced hard working employees and will continue to do so unless they start listening and improving employment and staffing adequately. You also arent able take your 15 min break anymore. Only your 30min lunch.

The culture of the organization is very old fashioned.  Employees have very little flexibility with their schedules, career development, work flexibility, flex time, etc.
Leadership is a nimble as a fat cow.  They are not well informed on industry trends, have no idea regarding market analysis, or asset management.  There is so much nepotism and so many turf wars it's a miracle that the hospital remains in business. Some of the business leaders are down right mean.  Especially the people in the Accounting department.
Even if you work for the hospital while you're going to school, and then get your RN license, if you haven't worked as an RN before they won't hire you as an RN.
But, the staff other than administration/leadership are dedicated and seem to truly care about their patients. There is no money for pay increases for most people, but the executive team goes on what seem to be weekly retreats to fancy hotels and restaurants so they can tell each other how great they are.
Good, talented employees quickly become tired of hearing 'but that's how we've always done it, why should we change'.  Nobody is interested in saving time or making anything more efficient - they are so stuck in their ways it's sad.  Anyone who has options to work elsewhere usually leaves as quickly as possible.

A typical day at Grand View hospital would include receiving patient report from the nurse on the previous shift. I would perform patient assessments, distribute medications,educate patient and family members on patient condition, and collaborate with physicians to provide quality care to the patients. Grand View provided many educational classes to advance your nursing education. I learned to be organized and prioritize. I learned to communicate assessments to physicians and to other pertinent staff. Our nurse managers on all shifts were always very helpful. Our nursing staff worked well with each other. The hardest part of the job became time management when there was not adequate staffing. My most enjoyable part of the job was the continuous on the job education and striving to give the patient the best quality of care

A typical workday consists of receiving a report from the previous supervisor with emphasis on problems with pt care and staffing. After getting as organized as possible I start rounding on the units, paying particular attention to special pt problems addressed in report.  I respond to any emergency situations to help with guidance and direction as well as facilitating transfers to higher levels of care. I find the upper management to be well removed from the concerns of the front line staff. The hardest part of the job is dealing with short staff and the most enjoyable part of the job is the staff I have been privileged to work with.

A typical day at work is comprised of multitasking, troubleshooting patients concerns, and superb teamwork. I have learned to work in a very fast growing environment and continue to prioritize my tasks to meet the needs of the patients, physicians, and staff members on a daily basis.  Management is always open to new ideas and have an open door policy.  The hardest part of the job is not being able to get precertification approved for patient's testing and/or medication prior authorizations. The most enjoyable part of the job is having the ability to be compassionate, empathetic, and culturally diverse to the understanding of patient's needs and health education.

A typical day of work I deal with many patients. I transport them to their proper destination. I bring them for testings like x-ray, MRI, CT scans. I've learned to be caring with patients but also to be fast and productive. I've learned to prioritize between jobs and also to multi-task between jobs. The hardest part of the job is when it gets busy i need to prioritize, to determined what job is more important than the other. For example ICU patients are the first in my list and then come everything else. I love my job, the people, the work environment is great, I couldn't ask for anything better. I love taking care of my patients and making them smile, I do enjoy that.
