Granite Construction

Granite construction in Raleigh is a great place to work at, they pay a MINIMUM of $11/hr for laborers on the paving crew, have free health insurance after 3 months, and you will get PLENTY of hours when its not raining or freezing cold.  You will have to work with the occasional annoyance of drivers on the road and annoying co workers, but that's everywhere. I was paid $13/hr starting off and i made $1200 before taxes one week, it was amazing (especially since im only 20). They are strict about being safe and will take care of you, but like i said, LOTS of hours.
I have worked over 40 almost every single week this year, and over 80 some also. That leaves very few hours in the day (7 usually including sleep some days)  sometimes working 36 hours straight. (usually 12 hour shifts).  Also, be prepared to work during cold, wet, or hot weather as you will work outside and the weather will change from hot to cold fast some days.  The work CAN be hard and stressful some days, but usually we take it at a nice medium pace with not too much hard work.  You'll be busy the ENTIRE day, but only doing HARD work for maybe an hour at the end.  Some days you can even get paid to sit around for 5 hours and sleep/eat/play games on your phone while you wait for the road to be cleared to work in it. 
Overall, a GREAT career choice, just NOT recommended if you need lots of time at home/school like myself.

The company offers excellent benefits, a positive workflow, and a generally supportive work environment. However, my experience with management was less positive.

While the organization promotes the idea that mistakes are opportunities for learning and that issues can be corrected, I found that this was not always reflected in practice. There appeared to be situations where information provided by certain employees was accepted without further discussion or verification, making it difficult to feel comfortable addressing concerns or providing additional context.

Communication from management was also limited. Interactions often occurred only when assistance or information was needed, which made it challenging to build a collaborative working relationship.

Additionally, the training process felt rushed and inconsistent. The individual providing training appeared overwhelmed, and instructions occasionally changed or contradicted previous guidance. This made it difficult to take accurate notes, learn procedures confidently, and develop a clear understanding of expectations.

Overall, the company has many strengths, particularly its benefits and operational processes, but improvements in communication, consistency in training, and management engagement would enhance the employee experience.


Great place to start as a project engineer out of college. You will learn skills that will make you extremely valuable to other employers in the Heavy Civil industry. 
An extremely top heavy company. You will be unable to count the number of VP's / Managers...
Their solution to problems faced by the company, is to hire more managers/department VP's even if the problem may be overworking their employees at the bottom and consequently facing turnover. 
This is not a construction company, this is a publicly traded accounting company with a construction division. Financial controllers (bean counters) with zero knowledge of construction are in full control of the company. 
For a construction company, they have embraced wokeness, this may be a positive for certain people, especially if you check all the affirmative action boxes you will likely be elevated quickly regardless of your individual effort/talent. 
My recommendation is to start here out of college and learn as much as you can and move on to another heavy civil company with better management and culture. 

Granite Construction is a large heavy civil contractor located on the North side of Salt Lake City off of Warm Springs Rd. The main office is a nice setup with standard features from what I can recall, i.e. break room, office space, reception area, etc. I was stationed on a project at the Salt Lake City International Airport constructing a deicing pad for aircraft. I felt like management was very accommodating when I hired on and trusted me with a phone, laptop and truck. I was enabled to perform my role well as a project engineer and enjoyed my learning experience as an intern. The work hours were as expected for the industry, which was on average 55 hrs per week. Getting time off was a fairly simple process which consisted of simply notifying my project team and passing down responsibilities during my time of absence. If I were to stay full time the benefits package was fairly competitive compared with the rest of the industry. Overall, it was a good company to work for, but what influenced my decision to switch was the possibility of having extremely remote projects and putting many hours on the road. For me that didn't fit my lifestyle goals, but during my time there I had a really good experience.

A typical work day/night as traffic control for Granite consisted of a minimum 12 hour shift with never ending suspense. You never know what traffic will do! The workers were very easy to communicate with which made work more exciting and safe. I learned many things working for Granite Construction. To name a few: how to successfully communicate with the public and maneuver them through a construction zone, how to work safely around big equipment, how to effectively set up traffic devices, and how to properly communicate with other workers to get the job done. My co-workers always had my back and helped me whenever help was needed. I trusted them and established a strong relationship. The hardest part of my job was dealing with inebriates who entered the construction zone. It became clear that controlling those individuals was not in my power. However, that is why our job sites had police officers standing by. The most enjoyable part of the job was every other moment not dealing with inebriates. I truly loved the job because I knew I was helping get something done. I was a necessary part of the system and other workers trusted me with their lives.

I was at Layne for seven years and met and worked with some real dynamic people. A typical day at Layne in the Finance department would be preparing cash reconciliations, preparing financial reports for state licensing, insurance analysis, and preparing for EOM close. I was primary responsible for our domestic and international cash analysis. Working with exchange rate calculations and our revolver debt (Libor, base rate, and LC's). The most enjoyable part of my job was that I was able to work with other departments like accounts payable, account receivable, and payroll as a liason for cash. Working one on one with key employees from each group to reconcile cash. I was able to learn their processes and help implement productive strategies to help with our overall agenda. The hardest part of my job was the high turnover at Layne and the lack of continuity for long periods of time especial at the management level. But the experience I gained was valuable and will allow me to be an asset for any company looking for a hard working individual.

Was hired for a job with 0 - 3 years of experience in description, which i had about 1.5 but what was expected was about 5. I had no one to train me on except for one woman who regularly me helped in the equipment yard. The only person i really had any issues with was my manager. Didnt care for reasons why things wouldnt/couldnt work, just expected results immediately. Was regularly high stress environment and was consistently pulled off jobs to do something else. So much so that id be interrupted 4-5 tasks in a row and then have to work backwards while also being told what else needed to be done in the midst of that. I found it difficult to finish the task id start in the morning because of that, then be questioned why i wasnt done with it. Very Frustrating. All others i worked with were very solid people, Engineers, Foremen, Drivers. Also expected to work overtime.

I have worked for Granite all total for 16 years. I started as a receptionist and have held multiple positions throughout my time here. Granite even helped pay for my higher education by offering tuition reimbursement. The benefit package with Granite is great. I do wish the medical was better but unfortunately with "Obama" care it changed the entire insurance structure. After 5 years you receive 3 weeks of vacation. They also offer 6 days of sick time. Other perks are employee discounts at entertainment parks, Ford company, 401K, credit union, pet insurance (yes, they even care about our furry friends) and so much more. If you are looking for a company that cares, this is it. Yes, some positions require more travel and yes, some department managers are more "difficult" but overall amazing company. Finally, Granite has been recognized as a World's Most Ethical Company for 8 years in a row (as of 2017). You don't achieve that recognition if it wasn't true.

The work itself was very hard and morale was generally low. Hazing was rampant, and the overall environment was poor. If you decide to take a job with this company you should be advised that they'll tell you that you may travel up to 25% of the time. During my time here, I spent an entire summer away from home. There isn't a work/life balance. Everyone on my crew, including myself, was either divorced, or on the quick path to divorce due to all the time spent away from home. This employer did get me my Class B CDL, and for that I am thankful. However, I left because I was supposed to receive a substantial pay raise upon getting my Class B and my HAZMAT and tanker endorsements. When this conversation was had, the employer expected to kick the can down the road. They're not understanding if you are in fact sick and can't make it to work. They'll fire you. Hopefully things have improved since my time here, but my experience was awful. 

This company used to be one of the best in the state everyone wanted to work at now it’s become one of the worst. The company has high turnover, poor upper management that lies & provides no support,  pushes you to go outside your boundaries yet preaches a culture that is opposite of that,  they preach safety standards that above normal then don’t get the correct equip for you to perform at there expectations, high expectations to perform job tasks that aren’t supported by the bid. There’s no continuity within the company to help each other, complete free for all style of work,  many hrs worked & family sacrifices as you’ll work most all weekends in the summer. No growth within management. As an engineer you’ll stay as a bean counter paper-pusher & be best down by PM’s
Dishonest-cutthroat SR PM’s that will work you 12 hrs a day on 8 hr salary. 
No acknowledgement for work & sacrifices.  
Be aware what your getting into with this company. There claim to be one of the “top places to work in America” is largely false
