GreenPath Financial Wellness

When you are hired in as an expert at Greenpath you get a bunch of promises, like onboarding three times a week, opportunities for additional training in your field or other lines of business, advancement, and trips to WHQ. The reality is if you are hired as a Financial Wellness Expert you will probably be doing 995-HOPE counseling which is a HUD funded program that essentially is get them through a session even if it's not applicable to their situation.  The callers are scared,  desperate,  and unsure of why they have to talk to you for counseling about their mortgage issues.  Nearly 100 percent of that counseling ends with referring the client (back) to the mortgage company or telling them about non-retention options.  If you are lucky, you won't be trained in housing and put into Debt Issue which is sales wrapped in a non-profit blanket.  Essentially your job is to "counsel" the client in regards to finances and debts and sell them a debt management plan (DMP) and other services like Earn Up, a bill pay service.   The main goal is to get the person to sign up even if it isn't in their best interest because the expert is "not a gate keeper."  In this line you will see experts fudging numbers, deleting bills from credit reports and budgets to get that money flowing into the company.  There is no culpability for these actions except the occasional coaching email. Expectations and goals change monthly, sometimes weekly, and other departments do not play well together or perform the duties assigned. Managers are not your friend,  don't let them friend you on social media, have important conversations on non-recorded lines, and most importantly,  GET EVERYTHING IN WRITING.  If you leave part way through the year, they will dock your PTO usage from your last check so you essentially make minimum wage.  The PTO is good, but the expectation is you only use an average of 5.5 hours per week  if necessary.   Insurance is Blue Cross Blue Shield and it's okay, but for two people you pay the same as a family of four.  Additionally,  if you leave before one year of service prepare to pay your training expenses back, which could include flights, car rentals, and hotel stays.  
Hours of operation are typically Monday through Friday, 8am est to 10pm est.  Saturday shifts are 9-1 for DMP and 9-5pm for housing.  You are informed that only four Saturday shifts are in rotation per expert, truthfully it's six to seven on average, especially if you are cross trained in multiple lines of business.   In general if you are starting out post college this is a low paying job that opens up doors to other financial industry jobs, but it's not a career.

I worked at GP for 2 years, I was hired under the assumption that the client comes first and that I would not be micromanaged. Needless to say that was not true, you are graded by your numbers and your employment at the company is solely based off of how well you are doing. To make things clear, this is a sales job. You are required to convert as many clients are you can and enroll them into the debt relief program offered at the company. If you do not meet those numbers you are at risk of losing your job. Admin tries to paint the picture of them being on your side but they are 100% NOT on your side. You listen to sob stories that are extremely heavy on your heart as well as your mental health and they do not offer any form of mental relief and basically require you to work like a dog with no commission or appropriate breaks.  They constantly look at your queue behaviors and literally keep track of your entire day. They prioritize the people that do well with enrollments and mistreat the people that are not. Your holiday off days are solely based off of whether or not you are doing well with your numbers and if you are doing poorly your PTO days get denied. Regardless of what the reason the client has for calling, they want you to make a session out of thin air. Completely unrealistic and you get absolutely no empathy from managers or admin AT ALL.

This is one of those places where you think people are incredibly friendly at first but there are a lot of issues at the top. Executive team are focused on getting their way and securing their own future because of board member pressure. It’s odd because they should be setting the example of being calm under pressure but it’s all reactive. It’s bizarre and hierarchical as if you’re working in the 1980s. Your pov will not matter and you as a person will not matter. Don’t ever attempt to share a differing view than what exec team says or you will be singled out.  This is the downside with a growing organization; any behavior from the top is acceptable because there isn’t a culture standard by which they uphold and conduct themselves by. There is no corporate culture and it’s unfortunate because there’s potential for greenpath to be a five star place of employment. Worst part is don’t expect job growth. You’ll get moved to several different roles but no raise or official title change. When you’re searching greenpath, you may come across several awards for best workplaces of Michigan…it has to be fake. There is no way this is the best workplace in Michigan. I’ve worked at 4 other prominent Michigan-based companies and they were all wonderful. Look past the “we’re like family” facade of greenpath and save yourself the headache and apply elsewhere.

A typical day involves coordinating multiple projects while collaborating across departments. My role focuses heavily on change management, partnering with change agents to support adoption, alignment, and successful implementation of initiatives across the organization.

Alright, let’s get the warm and fuzzy stuff out of the way: the perks include generous PTO, some stellar coworkers, and a few genuinely good managers. Yay for silver linings, right?

Now, onto the “fun” part: get ready to become the emotional sponge for every unlucky, unhappy, and utterly distraught soul who crosses your path. Oh, and don’t worry—your KPIs will be so high you’ll need a telescope to spot them. More responsibility? Check. Less pay? Double check.

And that feel-good company culture they’re selling? It’s just a glossy cover on the same old “make money, hit those numbers” book. As for your brilliant suggestions and comments? Expect them to vanish into the abyss—because change isn’t exactly in the company’s vocabulary. Seriously, take a stroll through past feedback; it’s like a museum of ignored ideas.

So, here’s some free advice: save yourself the headache and look elsewhere. Your future self will thank you.

Working at Greenpath has been meaningful experience overall. The company is mission driven and you can genuinly feel that they care about helping people improve their lives. Benefits are great, and there is a strong culture of support and teamwork.
There are opportunities for growth within the organization, but advancement is not always immediate and can be competitive depending on the role. The work itself can be stressful at times, but also very rewarding and satisfying.
Overall, it is good place to work  if you are passionate about helping others and want to work for a company with strong purpose

Policies and guidelines change via email from whichever manager would like to make the changes. Within the same day, a different manager may make another change.  You are expected to keep up with the 100+ emails you receive a day.  
The job is stressful enough, then to have to worry about being spied on via social media.  If they find out you are searching for different employment your are reprimanded and may be set up on an exit strategy.  
Technology fails regularly and this is one measure that you are graded on.  Very inconsistent numbers.
I accepted the job to help clients and their financial needs, NOT to sell items to clients that may not be a good fit or affordable for them.

I truly enjoy the culture at GreenPath, employees are encouraged to bring their authentic selves to work with them everyday and that is truly inspiring.

I think the heaviness of the services we provide can be very stressful on employees, 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
I work from home, but the have a standing meeting weekly with my supervisor and a standing meeting weekly with my team and I think the work environment is fantastic.  I am not micromanaged and and given freedom to get my job completed, but also given support and the opportunity to connect with my team weekly.

The department I'm in is a client facing department, this does come with stress as you never know what kind of call you'll be getting. Handling debt is a stressful situation and a lot of clients call in stressed and frustrated. Patience and empathy are required qualities for the position. 

Direct and department management are supportive and encouraging.  In the three years I've been here I've never felt like I wasn't a person, never been expected to be a machine or perform outside my capabilities. Very flexible for work/life balance and understanding when things come up.

Over all it's been a good experience.
