Since my time at GCS has spanned the years of being  new teacher, I have experienced a lot of variety in the amount of work I have had to put in and the related stress level. The first several years are extremely taxing for a new teacher, but thankfully I have been able to reach a point of less stress and more payoff after several years. The culture at my immediate workplace is very professional and the coworkers, administrators, and a great deal of the students I work with are highly knowledgeable and motivated. I have been able to operate smoothly as a teacher because of the strong support I receive from my superiors and am able to carry on productive relationships and collaboration with fellow teachers. The most enjoyable part of my job has become the meaningful interaction I consistently experience with my students and the relationships we have built together that allow them to learn better and me to teach more effectively. On the contrary, the biggest difficulty I face has been the growing pile of responsibilities I am expected to manage and the constant stream of new programs, guidelines, and curriculum implementations imposed by the district. It is difficult to manage instruction and communication when added requirements are placed upon us as teachers and eat up precious hours with seeming busywork. The fact that I work with talented, caring people and teach many terrific students is what grounds me most in my job, despite the challenges.

It was a pleasure working with staff and teachers throughout the system and especially the Employment Specialist (Substitutes, After-School, Adjuncts). One major highlight was the training offered in the summer. Taking several courses each summer allowed me to better understand the challenges students may face and how to teach them cognitively and humanely.

Some schools would slip extra classes into my schedule making for an exhausting, long day.  If some students were uncooperative - well, you know. However, I found that the Administrators always responded in a timely manner when I needed assistance.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Sometimes very demanding when some students were uncooperative. When you had the opportunity to teach serious students, there could be some pleasantly memorable experiences.

In my experience, once you sign on to a school location, it can be difficult to transfer for several years, which made it challenging when the environment wasn’t a good fit for me. The culture varied widely from one school to another. At the school where I worked, I often felt pressure to pass students regardless of their level of engagement or performance, and this affected my ability to maintain my own instructional standards.

I also struggled with the way serious behavioral issues were handled. From my perspective, the district did not seem to pursue legal or formal consequences for student aggression, even in situations that felt unsafe. As a result, I often felt unsupported when managing incidents involving physical behavior, and the follow-up process did not give me confidence as an employee.

On the positive side, the district offered strong benefits and professional development opportunities, and I enjoyed working with many talented and dedicated colleagues. However, based on my experience, the overall environment was not the right match for me.

the benefits and the people that I get to work with day to day at my schools. Top notch professionals and leadership that pushes me to be my best everyday.

Special needs students that we can not fully meet all of their needs. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Excellent. We work hard from sun up and sometimes till sun down. But it is rewarding everyday.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
I'm at school at 6:15 am most mornings even though school does not start until 7:00. I need to time in the building to be ready for the students and the families that walk through our doors. To give my best I go early and stay late.

I enjoy my role as a resource teacher and find it very rewarding to support students with diverse learning needs. I value the opportunity to build strong relationships with my students and help them grow academically and socially. Providing individualized instruction and seeing students gain confidence in their abilities is one of the most fulfilling parts of my job.

I appreciate the collaborative environment, working alongside general education teachers, support staff, and families to ensure student success. This teamwork allows me to better meet the unique needs of each student and create meaningful learning experiences.

Overall, I am satisfied with my position and take pride in the positive impact I make in my students’ lives each day. I look forward to continuing to grow professionally and enhance my skills to better support my students.

Substituting is very tricky. There is no consistency of hours & substitutes do not receive benefits. I loved working with the children but did not like the changes from class to class, school to school. It is tough not knowing from day to day if you have a job the next day. Many jobs were last minute & received that morning & rushing to get to school by 7:30. I thought I would get used to the last minute assignments but still challenging after almost 2 years. I loved the office environment & starting substituting because I would be home early each day & husband was on night shift. He is now on day shift & ready for office job.I also took large cut in pay.

Working as a substitute teacher at Greenville County Schools is a flexible job and it's enjoyable if you like working with the students.  Many days are a lot of fun.  

But  it can be very difficult, too.  Students can flat out refuse to put their phones away and you are not allowed to remove them (nor are their full-time teachers),  you are pretty much dropped in the classroom with no support, and the teachers rarely give any information on the assignment via the automated phone system.  

The take home pay for one day's work (for a sub who is not a certified teacher)  is a shocking $67 ($82 gross) and it commonly takes four weeks to receive payment for a day worked. An orientation/training session is required when you are hired for which you are not paid.

This district is an exciting work place.  Although I teach in one school, I am constantly involved in district activities and professional developments.  Although we are a big district, it does a great job of making everyone feel important.  You can always reach someone in every department when you need help.  In each school where I have worked, my co-workers have been supportive and kind.  They are always willing to help and collaborate.  The hardest part of the job is feeling like there is never enough time to complete everything you want to do.  The most enjoyable part of the job is working with students.  I love what I do and the joy that teaching gives me.

GCSD is a very large district.  Therefore there are a lot of resources which is good. HR, benefits, and even an employee assistance program.  Because they are soooo big some of the personal touch you might expect from district level personnel is lacking.  I know a Superintendent in a neighboring county who is on a first name basis with most of his teachers.  I once read that Education is the only job where you get a pay cut with a promotion.  GCSD is no different. The higher you go on the ladder the more hours you put in.  Job security is good.  There is a three year evaluation cycle which is very stressful and makes you feel like your job is on the chopping block even though it really isn't.  Culture and management depends on the school your at.
