What is the best part of working at the company?
Compensation was good; however, the cost of medical insurance for a family is outrageously expensive. The training process overall was very inconsistent. My initial training with Oscar was excellent he was supportive, knowledgeable, and provided a very helpful foundation for understanding the role. Unfortunately, once I transitioned to working under Jennifer Lopez, who served as my direct supervisor and Assistant Director overseeing multiple campuses, the experience declined significantly.

In my experience, her management and communication style often came across as unprofessional and disrespectful. I only met with her once a month, for a total of three one-hour video calls during my time there. Most communication occurred through Google Chat, where multiple tasks would be sent at once with little context, structure, or guidance.

The overall energy and work culture also felt very off and uncomfortable. There was little collaboration or sense of team support. The most challenging part of the role was the lack of proper onboarding and mentorship after the initial training period. I was not given the opportunity to shadow or work alongside other Financial Aid managers at different campuses, nor was I provided with additional contacts or resources I could reach out to for assistance. As a result, the training and work environment felt isolating and disorganized once I transitioned to that level of management

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The most stressful part of working there was the lack of structured training and support once I transitioned into the role. While my initial training with Oscar was very helpful, the experience changed significantly afterward. Communication from leadership was often unclear, with multiple tasks being assigned at once through Google Chat and very little guidance on priorities or expectations.

Additionally, there were limited opportunities to collaborate with or shadow other Financial Aid managers across campuses, which made it difficult to ask questions or learn best practices. Combined with infrequent check-ins and an overall work culture that felt tense and disorganized, it created a work environment that was unnecessarily stressful and isolating.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The work environment is fully remote, which can be convenient, but in my experience it also felt very isolating. Most of my communication was limited to one supervisor who was often extremely busy and not readily available for support or guidance. Because of this, there was very little collaboration or team interaction.

The overall culture felt disconnected, with minimal opportunities to build relationships with colleagues or learn from others across campuses. Without consistent communication, mentorship, or a broader support network, the remote environment often felt isolating rather than collaborative.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
A typical day was fairly unpredictable. In the morning, I would message Jennifer Lopez on Google Chat to let her know I was available for work—essentially “clocking in” verbally. After that, the flow of work varied significantly from day to day.

Tasks were not assigned consistently. Some days I would spend long periods waiting at my computer for direction until she decided to send something over. Other days I wouldn’t hear from her at all. Then there were days when I would suddenly receive a large number of tasks at once—some with deadlines and others expected to be completed immediately. Because of this inconsistency, it was difficult to establish a steady workflow or plan the day effectively.

When I first started with the company, I had a very positive experience. However, the organization began going through significant changes in 2025 that greatly impacted the work environment.

Campus-level management was supportive and did the best they could, but many challenges came from decisions made at the corporate level. Unfortunately, those decisions eventually affected day-to-day operations on campus, and local management often had limited ability to address them. What was once an enjoyable workplace became more focused on meeting increasingly difficult goals with little flexibility.

One example was the requirement to conduct info sessions that could last up to an hour and a half but did not count toward daily performance expectations. This made it difficult to meet required metrics within the workday.

Another change involved scheduling flexibility. Previously, employees could make up time if they arrived late due to circumstances like traffic or a doctor’s appointment by staying later or coming in earlier. Many employees were happy to do this because it allowed them to complete their work. When that flexibility was removed, it directly affected productivity and the amount of work that could realistically be completed. 

The most challenging part of the role was the constant changes in policies combined with limited training from the corporate level. Corporate was responsible for providing training, but in many cases the support was minimal. I personally received only one day of training and did not receive all of the materials needed to feel fully prepared. Additionally, campus staff were discouraged from providing hands-on training, which made it difficult because face-to-face guidance is often the most effective way to learn a role.

Despite these challenges, the most enjoyable part of the job was working with my coworkers. I built lifelong friendships and truly valued the opportunity to support students as they pursued their professional growth in the medical field. However, everyone is in a high anxiety environment and is seeking employment elsewhere. 

Didactic classroom instruction for students from all adult ages varying in educational background and maturity. Average class is about 30 students. Spent countless hours at home preparing for lessons and grading tests and answering emails from students.I learned how to motivate and teach students to try to use their critical thinking skills and not to just memorize questions for a test. Management was not supportive and sent out threatening emails assuming the worst instead of asking what had actually occurred  without assuming good intentions.Cheating is rampant at this school. Not a safe culture, always defending myself. Hardest part of the job was having to answer over 60 student emails on my own time. If you stayed on campus to do that, you were not paid for it, but it was still your responsibility to be available 24/7. It was difficult to balance work and home life because you had to grade your papers at home and that would take an average of 6-8 hours per 4 hour classes, plus, answer emails and post grades. Most enjoyable part of the job was watching the student's learning the material and using their critical thinking skills to grasp concepts.

This company acts like a mom and pop business with systems that do not support the growth of the company. The top leadership are unfair and demanding. They are not good communicators and take advantage of employees by dangling promotion if the employee acts out the role; yet they do not pay you for the role. AT WILL- really means what it implies. If you disagree or point out problems they chose not to deal with fire you without any "official" documented write ups etc. Benefits are horrible- medical is about 1300 for a couple per month for substandard healthcare. The culture is toxic. Most management roles are salaried and plan on working 50-70 hours per week. Expected attendance for meetings when off, late, early, and when traveling for business, and vacation.  Inequitable application of rules for employees and students. Cookie cutter curriculum without flexibility. Policies are constantly changing and it appears they are written by someone who does not have a command of English. Poor support from all help desks for various products and software used. 

I would say working at Gurnick my day to day operations and duties were heavy. Though manageable, once you get comfortable and create your flow. Expect for last minute emergencies/tasks that will interrupt task at hand. It’s a busy campus and I was very vital within day-day operations. Keeping organized and open communication will be necessary. The go to staff member for staff/faculty/students needs can be a challenge. If help was needed my direct supervisor was always available and beyond helpful everytime. Regardless if presence was on campus or not. Just like any work place nothing is perfect, everyone was like minded when it came down to students being top priority. Instructors were very hands on, knowledgeable, pride within their programs and it showed in the classrooms. As well as in student retention. I learned a lot and thankful for the opportunity. 

Gurnick Academy: Sacramento Campus for staff and students is toxic, dysfunctional, unprofessional, and should be shut down. Instructors do not get the support that is needed to be successful, there is no accountability, staff behavior is inappropriate, office staff is teaching clinicals, qualified Instructors is lacking, students report ready to learn; but do not have suppiles, because Instructors and Program Directors, fail to complete inventory causing students to not have the supplies they need for blood draws and EKG's i.e. Needles, syringes and gowns for EKG's. Do not work here unless you enjoy wasting your time and increasing your stress. This school is only interested in the money that Financial Aid brings in from the students.

You will never be bored in a growing and innovative company.  You will constantly learn about education, compliance, team building, and networking in your community to grow your program's presence.  Co-workers are fun and motivated to see the students succeed.  The hardest part of job is keeping up with keeping ahead of the schedule so that you are always ready for anything such as relocating your students if needed.  The most enjoyable part of the job was being part of a vibrant, diverse, and innovative company and the rewarding feeling of building a school.

A typical day involves trying to figure out what exactly to work on while forced to balance multiple competing priorities.  
I learned to manage people by NOT following my manager's example.  Management is disorganized, dishonest, and distrustful which has created a toxic workplace culture.  Tyrannical bullies are not only tolerated, but rewarded.
The hardest part of the job was protecting good employees, and surviving the abuse long enough to get into a better job elsewhere.
The most enjoyable part of the job was achieving goals in spite of unnecessary obstacles and lack of real support (deeds, not just words) from management.

What is the best part of working at the company?
The best work atmosphere. The best supervisors. The best coworkers.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The uncertainty of knowing that my program was bound to be closed.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The support and recognition of the work done. The cohesion among staff members is the best I've ever experienced.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Some hectic busy days offset by other more relaxed ones. The ability to work remotely is also a great incentive.

My coworkers are great! I feel very supported by them and I feel my immediate boss is trustworthy. The overall management style seems to be micromanaging and nosy. There is too much interdepartmental fighting instead of supporting each department and teamwork. The hardest part of the job is working with the students. The most rewarding part of the job is working with the students. I feel that over all the culture is supportive of both students and faculty with a desire to help all achieve their goals.
