H&S Bakery

     I did not work at H&S Bakery very long. Overall I enjoyed my time there. It was good experience. I am a foodie and nothing beats the smell of fresh baked bread. One negative was the heat. You know that heat rises and as you can imagine being over the bakery was hot! I'm normally cold working in most offices and found it a refreshing change some days.  They had ceiling fans and even provided us with personal fans for your desk. That's what a mean about a family atmosphere. They tried to make accomodations. The other negative was also at times a positive. The rigid scheduleding is just a part of call center work because there must always be telephone coverage. However the close working conditions and  regimented schedules are not for everyone. 
     Overall I would recommend working there. I had some issues navigating one of their old computer systems. It did not always document my work accurately. They may not still use it. I take some responsibility for a mistake I made once, however when a similar situation happened again I was blamed when I made sure my work was accurate. I blamed a glitch in the system because my computer that management knew had technically issues didn't always work. I still was repramanded because of my previous error. I don't think that was fair and didn't work there much longer. I made sure because of prior mess up not to screw up again. It's just as well because it was a long commute for me anyway & the pay was just OK. I would still recommend working there. I learned a lot in a short time. 
     Like I mentioned I'm a foodie and learned a lot about different types of bagels, bread and rolls from training and talking to the caters, chefs, and vendors. They supply bakery items for fast food chains, schools, hospitals and local cafes and sub/pizza shops. Also the time in the call center helped build my skills for later jobs! I shopped at bakery outlets before and H&S has a very nice store! Since the pay wasn't very much the free bakery items was a great perk. Bread freezes well and if you have a large family two free bread products everyday you work is awesome! 

A typical day at work consisted of meetings and providing my employees with in-person HR support. I had daily meetings with the plant manager, the union shop steward, and a plethora of employees. There was a long standing tradition for the Human Resources Department to have an "open door" policy. The Human Resources Department had two main entrances. One entrance was located off of the Shipping Dock and the other from the main street. In order to streamline my daily work, I created office hours and scheduled appointments for employees who required assistance with Worker's Compensation claims, FMLA-Short Term Disability, harassment claims, etc.  I learned that I function best when my environment is structured and organized. I also illustrated that the employees could adapt to this change. The plant manager and I worked especially well together and often agreed on how we would facilitate grievance hearings and employee meetings. One of my biggest challenges was having one of the more tenured employees go and complain to one of the family members regarding HR policy and procedures. It was important for me to have consistent policies, procedures and practices across the board. The hardest part of being the HR Manager at this facility was when I was asked to conduct an internal I-9 audit. As a result of conducting this audit, we lost some of our hardest working employees. What I enjoyed most was having the capability to sit down and talk with my employees face-to-face versus remotely.

The bread industry is super competitive and manufacturing can be challenging at times.  Like anything, the job is what you make of it.  Some people look for a job while others strive for a career.  There's tremendous potential for those who apply themselves and know how to work with people.  The company has really tried to modernize and redevelop the company mission, vision and values.  The more people that embody those core values will ultimately make H&S Bakery a better environment for everyone.  

Granted, there are challenges.  All companies have them.  It's what we do when those challenges occur that sets us apart from the rest.  All in all, H&S Bakery and the other affiliated companies do rally when push comes to shove and are capable of maneuvering much more quickly than other competitors in the industry.  There's never a dull day at H&S Bakery.  It's nice that this started as a family business and has grown to the size that it has.  There are a good number of employees that have 20, 30 and even 40 years with the company.  I think that says something.  

The day always starts off by going over all of the emails that have come in during the night from the depots and also the different departments. If there are any areas that need to be followed up on we will do so at this time. By 7:30 it is time for scoring of the product in the Quality Control lab. I take a walk through both shops after scoring to see what kind of day is scheduled on each of the 4 lines and determine if we are on time. We have a contact meeting at 9:00am with all the department heads to discuss the past 24 hours of manufacturing and any areas that we all need to follow up on. The rest of the morning is spent working on any issues that may arise during the day. The afternoon holds a conference call on 2 days of the week. We work with the departments to increase productivity and reduce cost during the afternoons. My job is responsible for Production, Maintenance, Sanitation, Shipping, Quality, Transportation, Safety. The hardest part of the job is teaching the same things to employees that are resistant to change. The most enjoyable part of the job is when you teach better more efficient ways of doing a job and you are able to see the results of the labor.

Great job for someone who is re entering the workforce or thinks they are unemployable but you will quickly learn that the company's Dog Eat Dog mentality management of each department operates on a throw under the bus mentality which the employees of the departments suffer. Promotions and Advancement is not based on work knowledge or work ethic it's based on favoritism. The job literally doesn't care about you at all. Example Ive seen Your wife is sick and u need to work a different shift to help Care for her your denied because the company needs you to fill their demand. If u have a family or anything outside of work this is not the place for you

Typical day is very educational physical and learning opportunities and most gratifying

Steady work. No layoffs. Good benefits

The most stressful part about working for H&S bakery. In some departments, management is permitted to mistreat employees.

In some areas of the bakery the Working conditions are hot. The culture changes depending on supervision and management

I do not work there anymore. I resigned several months ago

What is the best part of working at the company?
Excellent company to work for,  the community and communication is beyond approach.  I would still be working there, but to family problems  I had to relocate to another state.




What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Time off is the most stressful part about working for this company.  The only day off was Christmas Eve. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Considering you are baking and packaging bread the environment is warm, however the culture is great one big family.

Job as delivery driver is strictly commission meaning you don’t get paid for loading orders onto truck and if you get to a store and customer cancels or doesn’t want order you don’t make any money for that stop.  Stocking supermarkets and dollar stores pay little to no commission.  If bread doesn’t sell and goes bad at supermarket or dollar store, you must issue a credit for whatever didn’t sell to the store which takes back the commission you earned.  So you could possibly deliver bread and go back a week later to pick it up and not earn a dime.

Who was long work hours you work 12-hour shifts you work 3 days you work four days off three the job was good it was just that I was wrong I was very long hours and you really had nothing else to do and it was like I work evening shift so 6 I'm at work 6 a.m. I get off in time I get home it's time to go to sleep when I wake up it's time to go back to work wasn't no life in that kind of shift it's good for somebody Young starting out working it's a good job to have in the pay was all right
