HCA Florida Blake Hospital

Unfortunately the corporation is looking for machines not employees. Every year we are expected to make cuts or "deep dives" or some such nonsense that they come up with. 
I have worked for this company for eight years and have witnessed a very rapid growth in our volumes due to corporate pushes for us to become a trauma center and now a burn center....one of only 12 in the state of Florida.
Our facility is too small to keep up with the amount of patients that we are now seeing in our facility.
Patients are being treated in the hallways, lobby and just about anywhere they can prop up a chair. It's embarrassing that we are treating patients like "products" in an assembly line.......horrible patient care is given and random tests are ordered on patients that aren't even necessary because NO one actually takes the time to Talk to them and accurately diagnose them ......instead they just order a bunch of ridiculous tests that the patient doesn't even need just to make the "numbers and TIME" look good.......
Employees are overworked....staffing is kept at the bare minimum...and patient's suffer due to corporate greed........
Your probably wondering why I'm saying all this if I've been there for so long...........I'm done.........they win.......I've been broken!!!

I would not recommend working in the therapy department due to the toxic management and their complete disregard for both employees and patients. Leadership fosters a culture of bullying, favoritism, and intimidation, making it an incredibly stressful and unhealthy work environment. Employees are micromanaged, belittled, and given little to no support, while any attempt to voice concerns is met with retaliation.

Beyond the poor treatment of staff, the company’s priorities are clear—profits over patient care. Decisions are made based on financial gain rather than what is best for the people they are supposed to serve. The lack of ethical leadership creates an environment where cutting corners and ignoring patient needs is the norm. High turnover and low morale are constant issues, yet management refuses to acknowledge or address the toxic culture they have created. Management often deflected blame or retaliated against those who spoke up. 

If you value integrity, respect, and quality care, I strongly suggest looking elsewhere.

The facility threw itself into being a trauma center without adequate staff preparation and training, and is now beginning to set up a burn unit, also without adequate preparation.

While the work is no harder than any other hospital, the atmosphere of the trauma staff is not conducive to good interaction with the laboratory and surgical staff, and there have been many times that the trauma staff's failure to adequately inform the laboratory or the surgery staff of the patient's status resulted in serious, unnecessary delays.

Recently, all microbiology was outsourced, causing several persons to lose their jobs abruptly, and the result has been a delay in patient care due to a delay in turnaround time, especially for blood and wound cultures. For a possible burn center, this is not acceptable.

The laboratory management's standard answer to problems is "I didn't know this was happening." There is very little oversight to reduce staff tardiness and failure to show for shifts, and this is bringing down the morale of all lab personnel.

I enjoy the work, and most of the people I work with, but the problems make me feel that I can't give my best for the patient.

Worse experience due to lack of investment in support systems, competent trained personnel. More than half nursing staff are traveler nurses, permanent staff are only 2 yr RN. Few have advanced training. I was in charge of some of the training. IT support is a joke. 6 weeks could not down load results from nursing equipment. IT said equipment fault. MDs furious -complained patient risk high. In the end IT admitted they had changed the equipment to a new IT site , the cause of problems. Takes 10 steps to everything instead of one or two. All depts report same issues. Old timers say nothing changes. I worked in lab. It was run by IRL. Many violations in documentation and procedures. Found most personnel trying to do right, but not rewarded for doing right. Every competent person I met seemed to be gone in a few months , resign or fired.  This is my 3rd HCA to work for, and my last. They all are run the same. Sub standard staff and under trained people are easily hired there and seem to survive. Rules, regulations, and ethics elude HCA.

1. A typical day at work?
If you’re a PCT expect to get no help from your charge nurse or nursing staff, as well as management. You will not be able to sit for anything other than your 30 minute break or 15 minute break, and the nurses will NOT help you with call lights or changing patients.

2.What do you believe you learned?
I learned nothing other than to be harassed and bullied, and to just deal with it.

3.Management?
They can’t keep a Unit manager longer than a year if that. The unit managers that are there, are only focused on the reviews from the patients and whether or not it makes them look good. These managers do NOT care about their employees and if you have a complaint you might as well keep it to yourself, it’ll go unresolved and then you’ll be painted out to be the problem. Look at the turn over rate.

5. The hardest part of the job?
As a PCT you’ll be overworked and constantly under staffed, most techs don’t make it past 3 months if that.

6. The most enjoyable part of the job?
Going home.


I worked here for 5 years in radiology.  It was always a glaring fact that the floors were understaffed with nurses, always.  We were always 1 or 2 technologists shy of a full staff which created stress and once in awhile some mandatory shifts to share amongst co-workers.  I felt that the heads of administration did not respect the radiology department enough and we always felt like the red-headed stepchild compared with the nurses.  I got along well with co-workers, but that was partly because we all commiserated with each other about how poorly the place was run.  It's an okay place to work if you don't mind being underpaid, and constantly seeing co-workers come and go.  The only reason I stayed so long was because I changed my status from F/T to PRN, which kept me in control of what shifts I was willing to take and kept me away from the office politics.  Probably not much different than most other hospitals who see profits over patient care.

Blake Medical Center overall is a decent employer. Blake does have a union which has greatly increased working conditions for the staff. Working conditions on the med-surg floors is rough. Blake still uses double occupancy rooms. With the addition of a computer desk for the nurses and larger beds than what was available in the 80's you have very cramped working conditions. HCA believes cheaper is better and applies this philosophy when buying equipment. No expenses is spared when it comes to remodeling a patient waiting area or re-skinning the outside of the building.

For the area Blake does offer decent wages. The benefits package is much to be desired but it is offered. Blake has a high census especially since becoming a provisional level 2 trauma center. Call-offs are probably going to be less frequent.

A typical day at work involves performing a minimum of 8 to 10 echocardiograms, spanning TEEs, Structural Heart, inpatients, outpatients, surgeries, and emergency cases. Over time, I enhanced my patient care approach and refined my skills, becoming a seasoned and compassionate cardiac sonographer. The most challenging aspect of my job was dealing with the loss of patients, though I understand it's an inevitable part of life. The ever-changing culture of the medical field demands adaptability and staying informed to excel in this profession. My love for what I do makes going to work easier, and I take pride in knowing that my expertise and care have made a meaningful impact on so many lives over the years.Li

After over 20 years in a leadership position at Blake my position was eliminated. The very young, inexperienced senior leader that made that decision didn't even last a year. There is zero loyalty now shown to managers and staff. Unlike the early years when you felt secure and proud in your position. The culture at Blake used to be a wonderful one. Full of pride and caring people that truly loved the hospital and the community we served. We earned so many awards and honors and were continually recognized as an outstanding hospital. It is very sad to witness what it has become. Most staff walk around all day with a glazed and pained expression on their faces.While there are still many great people working at Blake their morale has been crushed by the for profit giant that is running it into the ground. With the recent turnover of the top three O's, maybe it can again become a great place to work. IDK.

Blake Hospital does an incredible job at mitigating many of the common complaints that nurses and other floor staff face at most facilities. My team at Blake works together to make sure that everyone on the floor feels supported, and that even on their worst days, you never lose your sense of control. Both our managers and directors round on the floor frequently to ensure the satisfaction of the patients, as well as the well-being of the nurses and techs. The hiring process is very straightforward, I was kept in the loop during the entire timeline, and never felt I was "left hanging". I would recommend any healthcare professional, seasoned or green, to apply at Blake hospital.
