HCA Florida Largo Hospital

Chronically understaffed but will do everything and I do mean everything to drag their feet getting agency to help.  By chronically understaffed, I  mean by 50-60% EVERY DAY.  The burn out is so real 19 full time ICU nurses, the manager and the director of MICU all walked out in July. They have a reputation within the area of such staffing and no one wants to work there.  My dept can go months without an application and then the only ones that do apply are from out of town and don't know how bad it is until they get in.  Working during the pandemic has been ridiculous and I'm entirely surprised that the employees haven't gone on strike to call attention to the ridiculous conditions.  To top it off, they make you stand in line every day to get PPE.  You have to have your badge scanned and tell your dept before they will stingily give you 5 gowns, an N95 and a face shield. FIVE gowns for an entire shift, even though you have 20 patients to see, 3 times each over the next 12 hours, some entire wings full of COVID patients. They also have bins all over the hospital to drop your used N95 in after your shift so they can clean it and re-issue it.  Mine goes in the trash after every shift.  I also work at a very large hospital in the area, different company and ALL of our PPE is at the bedside and has been since June.  I guess LMC got the memo that the PPE shortage is over but their inherent cheapness directs them to continue to endanger their employees lives by doling it out like we are children.  Because we are stealing it?  Because we are wasteful?  Nope, just cheap.  The mission statement is "Above all else, we are committed to the care and improvement of human life" which is blatantly false.  They are committed to profits and nothing else. The pay is ridiculously substandard for the region yet the first thing they tried to do during the pandemic is try to say no raises this year despite record profits.  By record profits, you should know that Largo Medical Center is the 50th most profitable hospital in the nation out of 6,146 hospitals.  Let that sink in, then take a walk through the place and realize how little money they put into upgrades.  The MICU C and D units and Neuro ICU haven't been upgraded to this century let alone decade in probably 30 years.  They still have pods with curtains as rooms. TINY rooms with broken lights and plugs and sinks, leaking oxygen and air connections, curtains and blinds and computers falling off.  It looks like 1978 up in there. But then they bought and started a multi million dollar upgrade to the medical office building in front of the hospital only to find out after millions of dollars in that the structure isn't sound and they can't use it.  It sits empty with all that money spent but the employees can't have raises and the ICU hasn't had an upgrade in 30 years.  It's truly an awful place and will make you question your career path when the burnout starts to creep in and envelope you.  You have been warned

My day starts with a management huddle that involves the CEO down through all managers.  We hit the ground rounding on our employees and patients taking the opportunity to live out our mission statement as we grow and build a sustainable customer focused culture that is fun and patient centered, all at once.

The balance of the day is, of course comprised of meetings where we set the direction and pace of our CEO's vision for our facilities (3).  We are a very, very competitive team and we pride ourselves on being trailblazers, leaders of innovation and are often willing to be the 1st in our division of 16 facilities to launch a new product line.  Most recently, we launched Kidney transplant services and soon Liver, with other product lines to follow.

I mentor while leading my pharmacy team and fertilize their futures with the thought of where they are 'going to be', not where they are.  That said, many past pharmacy techs under my watch are now pharmacists and past pharmacist, Clinical Coordinators, Pharmacy Informatics Specialists, Assistant Directors of Pharmacy and Directors of Pharmacy.  Their success is a reflection of my own leadership style, as much as them moving toward their innate ability to succeed.

First off, you as an employee, you don't matter to them your expendable. LMC will work you to death; including putting you on call for 2-3 facilities/campuses at the same time for the same rate as one hospital with the lowest call pay in west coast Florida.  They even dropped the pay scale to the 2000 year pay rates.  You will find hardly any longterm employees cause you cost too much and they replace you with new inexperienced beginners. This company is the cheapest for pay, worse benefits (watch out for their 401 program ), worse management bean counters, and worse doctor behavior ( rude, entitled, favoritism, good old boys club) I've dealt with for years. Doctors are all that matter to this company and of course their board member/ stockholders. The machinery in the hospital is cheap GE ick products from 10 yrs ago and run down.. ex beds don't work half the time.  Run from this company.

My day would begin with finding what floor my patients were located on.  looking at the notes in the chart for any previous place they had been such as Skilled or Assisted Living.  Discussed discharge plan with Dr, Pt and family.  Sent clinical to insurance company as well as the facility that patient would be going to or home health as well.  If they needed DME that was set up before they left the facility.  IV therapy as well.  My coworkers were a great resource when I had difficulty placing or finding resources for the patient.  The hardest part of this job was finding placement or resources for those without insurance.  The most enjoyable part of this job was when I could find placement and resources for those without insurance.  Management here was very supportive of the Case Managers.

If you are looking for a work place that will treat you like a human being, this is the wrong place to work at. This place will make you feel like less than a human due to the fact that they will treat you like a number and constantly want you to do more for the same low pay that you get. There were very hostile people that worked here, which made matters worse if you were trying to work to treat a patient and there was absolutely nothing you could do about it. Management was close to nonexistent when you needed something and the times that they were there, they were very hostile as if it was a problem to come to them for anything. I constantly lacked the resources and staff to perform the jobs in my department, which ultimately slowed down production on myself since I was constantly burned out. The only positive (I guess) is the fact you gain some sort of experience in health care. In all, I would not recommend anyone to work here.

i would say my experience at largo medical was great being that it was flexible with my school schedule and the hours for my position consisted of 12 hr shifts which was great to come and do my my job and go home. But... the staffing company they use is horrible! they would change my schedule without my knowledge. staff would manipulate the schedule and talk the supervisors into placing them in someone else's scheduled dept and get so upset about moving employees would then walk out while on the clock AND NEVER GET PENALIZED.  Administration is a joke being that they have informed their employees a time or two "they can easily be replaced". and they under staff ALL THE TIME making it a huge safety issue for staff and patients. I wouldn't recommend this company to anyone unless they absolutely needed  job to survive.

A typical days includes paperwork and answering any questions from the prior work day. Taking calls, doing payroll, managing employees and anything else to do with HR paperwork related duties. The management team in the department is amazing, we work together very well but we are only as good as our employees. Unfortunately the housekeeping department is looked down upon in a lot of ways, and we don't receive a lot of the respect we deserve for how hard we work every day; which i would say this would be the hardest part of the job. I enjoy working hard, and its disappointing that a lot of people don't share the same point of view. All and all i love doing my job and every aspect of it, but I need somewhere fresh and new. Somewhere I can expand my experience and put my skills to a better use.

I worked night shift on med/surg/ortho floors. Nurse to patient ratio was typically 1:5 or 1:6. I learned that working night shift can be challenging sometimes as doctors and management are not available at hand and I had to use critical thinking skills to know when to call or not to call a doctor. Management was helpful and understanding with our concerns, always accommodating with the scheduling requests and vacations demands. The teamwork was excellent, nurses really help each other to make their lives easier and provide top notch patient care. This is something I treasured and appreciated while working at Largo Medical Center. 

The hardest part of the job was probably not having enough nursing tech support at times. Otherwise, it is a nice place to work at.

How sad to see such lack of integrity and professionalism in a global corporation. 

HCA will hire anyone with a pulse and keep them employed even after the pulse is gone. 

The leadership and lack of experienced professional employees makes what HCA does in the rest of the county not even matter.

Recommendation only: get your leadership out from in front of the camera's and into the front lines where the real work is being preformed and keep those first responders alive.

The community knows your the CEO, COO, CNO, ACNO, VP  and Directors. The employees know as well, step aside and support the service line or continue the fastest employee turnover and financial assault of retention in the state.

Working at Largo Medical Center was a great experience.  many wonderful people that i had a chance to make friends with both personally and professionally.  My title was equipment manager and i  had many responsibilities which i took very seriously.  My main concern every single day was to make sure the patients had the best possible care and the best quality of life as possible during their stay.  And i believe i accomplished that every day i was there with the help of a tremendously professional nursing staff.  I will miss them.  But i will also miss other great people and personalities that i made good friends with.  Yes it was a great learning experience.
