HCA Florida Oak Hill Hospital

Oak Hill has a small town culture, but is one of the largest and busiest hospitals in Hernando county. Profit is the priority, so expect short staff support, and below average equipment. The hospital has a very high census, and often is above capacity with standing room only in the ED. There is construction plans to add more beds, but don't expect more equipment or staff to service the additional patients. Department budgets are very limited. This is a teaching hospital with several resident programs, and students to train. Inside the department, favoritism and drama are tolerated on a daily basis. Bullying, harassment, unprofessional language, and negativity are common. Those who take "Call" will be called in regularly. Cafeteria has limited hours, and a limited menu. Additional parking has been added, but expect to walk to work, cause they don't offer a shuttle to transport. Oak hill has the potential to be a great employer, but it needs to invest in staff and equipment or it will always see high turnovers every year. Despite all these challenges, patients seem to be very satisfied with the level of care, and patient surveys seem to be very good. Imagine if the hospital had state of the art equipment and a fully supported staff, and a few great onsite food vendors, with a nice transport shuttle for all to enjoy. 

So I came to this hospital working ICU but you can get floated 1 or 2 times a week if the numbers are low. Every floor they floated me to was nice, helpful and friendly. You get the feeling that the nurses really want to help the patients and take pride in their job. In the ICU/ER I can say the charge nurses are helpful and willing to help out whenever you are having a problem. The charge nurses at this hospital are actual a good resource to use when needed and will check on you throughout the shift to see how you are doing. Staffing is like most places with hit an miss days, sometimes you may get tripled but the staff and charge nurses are very good about helping you out when this happens (even when your patient needs to go to CT they will try and take them for you).  its HCA so the scheduling is done by open selection so I did enjoy that. the overall travel experience has been a good one on day shift. so much so that 3 of us have signed up for another 13 weeks. the workers and management really try to help you feel like part of the staff family. would recommend to first time travelers for ICU for sure.

I have worked at several HCA hospitals over the years, and this one is no different.  Always understaffed.  In fact, that is their business model.  The company reports record profits every year, but they make those profits money by paying 3 people to do what should be the work of 5 people.  Less payroll equals higher profits.  But it is the employees and patients who suffer.

I work in the ICU.  For the most part, we have enough nurses to cover the workflow in the ICU.  We have good managers who do the best they can with what they are given.  But because the hospital is always so understaffed, HCA staffing regularly pulls multiple nurses from the ICU per shift and floats them to other departments in the hospital, leaving the ICU short staffed. 

So the ICU nurses get tripled (3 patients) on a very regular basis, which is completely unsafe for critical care patients.  Patients fall, patients deteriorate and it doesn't get caught until too late, patients get pressure wounds (bedsores), patients have to lay in their own waste for way too long, etc.  In all honestly, I wouldn't take my dog there.


A typical day of work required me to set up my bucket for getting ready to work. I then went through the x-ray hallways cleaning every bathroom and room I came across. I would then clean most of the main hallways on the first floor, and went to the second floor to clean up Dialysis. I would go back down to the first floor, and clean the cafeteria inside and out. I would then autoscrub all hallways of the first floor and burnished fresh wax on those hallways. I would then head into the doctor's lounge and clean the areas within it. Management was very strict and did not really work with us. My co-workers were amazing people and I learned a lot from them. The hardest part of the job was just being able to keep up with how much went on throughout the day, including only having a 30 minute break. The best part of the job was just having a chance to work together as a team, cleaning the hospital as it should.

Greeted and registered patients as appropriate for inpatient and outpatient services.
Ensured correct billing and insurance information received for patients and entered into correct digital programs.
Answered incoming calls and transferred as appropriate.
Accepted patient questions, ensured they received correct information and provided directions to departments and offices within the hospital.
Ensured all registration documents were properly completed, signed and routed.
Assisted with transporting of patients through and between departments and delivered samples to laboratories.
Observed patients for status as directed by nursing staff, reporting any changes to status appropriately.
Assisted security through monitoring of emergency room patient entrance.
General administrative duties and office procedures as needed.
Called for ambulances and medivac as needed.
I enjoyed  working in the fast paced atmosphere of the ER. The doctors were great to work with and the staff all got along.

A typical day starts with approximately 200 clinical alerts that are completed about 1300, then you resolve approximately 50 IV to PO conversions, and then you resolve approximately 75 de-esculation antibiotic alerts. In between I speak at the ID weekly meeting, lead the afternoon daily meeting and make all of the chemotherapy and TPN's. 
I wish I could say there has been a great expansion of my knowledge although I have a high level of energy and vast experience.
Oak Hill has a great management team and I supervise the evening shift when management and other supervisors are away for various reasons.
Culture is very robust and very caring of our patients.
The hardest part is following other persons with very little work ethic.

Before it became all about money they were the best company to work for no matter what position you were in. Now, long time dedicated employees are usually forced into retirement early, position eliminated, fired, etc,   They also always seem to tell the public all beds are full when really the truth is they don't have enough staff. They are only focused on building more for that facility  so they can make more money instead of focusing on all the problems in existing areas. 

I delivered meals to the patients in the hospital. I learned that doing this kind of work puts a new prospective on life and how precious life is so I need to live it to the fullest. My manager was really nice. I didn't always agree with my coworkers decisions in life but I was their friend. I didn't have any enemies. The hardest part of the job was building relationships with the sick patients and going back to their rooms to deliver their meal and having the nurse tell me they just passed away. The most exciting part of my job was getting to put a smile on those sick patience faces when they didn't feel like smiling.

I would load and clean trays, serve food on a scheduled floor and return to pick up and clean patients area.  I would service my patients with kindness and understanding and maybe make them smile.
Management did not teach me much I was thrown in to learn the food service by myself.
My co-workers were a super bunch of people, still friends till this day.
Hardest part was training myself and learning from my mistakes.
Enjoyable part was seeing the patients smile.

You can tell the difference between facilities that are FOR profit and NOT FOR profit. HCA is FOR profit. The pay was extremely low. I had mt BSN and 2 year experience and the nurse they just hired that I was precepting had no experience new grad ADM was making $2 more than me. Management sucks and definitely plays favorites and doesn't mind throwing you under the bus. Many times had no aides on the floor and still 6 patients to take care of. I hated my time there and was really happy when I left.
