The culture in my workplace environment at SLMC is one of the best I have been involved with in a very long time, which is the most enjoyable part of going to work.   

A typical day consists of a disciplined work ethic to get busy and care for patients in the best possible means, using your team to assist in caring for each patient's needs in order of critical care.  Each time I work the floor, I look for ways to improve care and to be more efficient, so I can get to making sure all patient's needs are met.

Our director is one of the best I have ever experienced.  The director has a way of making everyone feel valuable, while at the same time holding each accountable for the highest level of patient care.  You will do things the right way, or else!

The hardest part of the job is the physical demands of working on a hospital floor.  It is hard labor.  There is no stopping.  You are on your feet for nearly the entire 12 plus hour shift.   If you are high energy, it will certainly be a job that meets your needs to go, go, go!

I have found the combination of having an amazing Director, a loving and supportive team, and being involved in patient care has been ideally suited to me, my skills and personality.  I love where I work and who I work with and hope to continue my nursing career with SLMC until I retire.

I work the night shift as a Patient Care Assistant.  The nurses I primarily am involved with are the best group of women I have ever worked with and I love the team spirit they hold. 

The hardest part of the job is keeping up, as it is hard work at a fast pace most of the time.  

There are regular meetings with the CEO and leadership who seem to always be apprised of what is going on with your floor and the quality of your work, and during these meetings we learn about how our hospital is doing overall and where we are looking at improving and why.  This totally impresses me that our CEO is invested in the employees in this way. 

HR has reached out to me to make sure I was aware of benefits that I may have otherwise put off, but they made it so easy for me to benefit from these benefits. I never have experienced HR going out of their way to help me reach my professional goals in this way.  I do feel valued at SLMC and it means I have no interest in looking elsewhere, and look forward to going to my shift to work with my team, to learn and to help patients heal comfortably. Time flies when you enjoy your work.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Best place to call home. Employees are friendly, helpful, polite, and professional. This is one of the best places I have ever worked in. The environment makes me feel safe and comfortable. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
I would have to say it is nothing but normal stress of any job. The difference with St. Lucie is you don’t feel threatened by your surroundings or by management.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Everyone smiles, the culture is mixed but so divine to work here.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
From the moment I step out my car in the parking lot everyone smiles and say good morning to you or wish you a great day. And most of the time they don’t know you. Very pleasant environment.

I worked there for almost four years. I was offered the same compensation full time as per diem with cardiac floor experience. They often would cut nurses or techs based on numbers rather than acuity of floor. Often on cardiac floor with nursing 1:7 at nights and techs 1:18. They would make cuts around midnight when shifts are 7pm to 7 am. Patients on cardiac drips, bipaps, contact iso, and ICU downgrades due to their ratios. Often would not chart till 2 to 3 in AM. Even orthopedics floor at nights ratio of 1 to 7 up to 8.

I was very surprised at the salary I earned for the amount of work that I did. Hospitals tend to be money makers so that’s not so unusual. I was disappointed in the department I was in. My manager seemed incompetent- I seemed to know much more then they did and my workload was way beneath my skill level. I quit because of boredom. I’m much happier at a job where I am actually using my skills and I’m contributing to my new company. Senior management had no idea what our department was about. The disconnect between senior management and the rest of the hospital was pretty disappointing. If you just want a paycheck, you can work here. But if you’re interested in having a meaningful career, try somewhere else.

I feel like I can ask anyone any questions and will be helped. The night crew is so laid back and ready to help. The manager is nice nd does weekly check ins with me on my progress since I am a new Grad. 
Unfortunatly the pay is very low compared to other hospitals. The only good thing is that you get a pay rate change once you transfer to a specialty floor. 
Their contract is 2 years, $5,000. So if I break it , I owe that. It is intimidating and it makes m,e feel trapped. Overall I am ,making the most f this experience. I just wish the "highschool" cliques on the day shift were left back in highschool. But if you ignore that, and focus on your job, the shift flies by. 

If you are on a unit with a professional, competent, and qualified leader you will likely enjoy a wonderful career with amazing co-workers/highly skilled professional team members you are proud to be part of.  However, not all units have qualified and professional leaders.  The unit I transferred to had some of the least professional leaders I have ever worked with in my 30-year professional career.  Poor leaders affect the success of the unit, including having staff members that are petty, incompetent, mean-spirited, and unprofessional.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Management. Not supportive at all.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Very stressful. The leads and managers micromanage everything but never jump in to help out.


What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Running, running, running. Texts from uppers telling you things you may have forgot and reminders of things to get done before shift end. And then a reminder not to punch out late.

SLMC uses MediTech which is a DOS based program straight out of the 1980's. It is so clunky, time consuming, reduntant, and not user friendly. Taking care of patients on a busy floor with little to no help from supervisors is quite common in any hospital. However, combine that with the fact that you're trying to document on an antiquated dinosaur system makes working there a terrible experience. I couldn't wait to get out of there and I warn every nurse I know to steer clear of  that place.

I worked there for a year and a half. The CNO does not care about her staff. She stated to a senior nurse "I can replace all of you easily." They are there to make a profit, not to do what's best for the patient. Does your patient need a foley? Too bad, we can't have a CAUTI so instead, we will straight cath them 6 times a day and ensure they get a UTI but don't have to worry about not getting reimbursed.
