HEALTH PLAN OF SAN JOAQUIN

Health Plan of San Joaquin is a company that is only still around in due part of the state of CA. Internally the company is a mess and far behind other companies. They mainly use a tempt agency for hiring, simply so they suck the life out of the employee. If you make one mistake, they will likely term you during your first 90 days. The Director of CS has no idea what he is doing,and gets by, simply because he feels like he can bully people around. He is more consumed about his divorce. As a rep, if you are more then 30 seconds late from breaks, lunches or logging into work it's consider a tardy. Your only allow 4 tardies before you get a verbal, written etc... Training is a joke, and they expect you to be a pro and make no mistake after 2 weeks of training. The company has a high turn over rate and HR knows about this but doesn't bother to take a look into this. They look the other way. HR will post a job, but will not give you the courtesy of interviewing. They give the Job to someone they know. The pay is not worth the stress. As a rep your looking at $13-$15 an hour. They don't have an established process for documents. If the manger or management doesn't like you or, as a rep if you challenge them, they will do anything to fire you. So beware, if hired guard yourself and don't stop looking for a better job.

I've been here for a few months now (fully remote), and I really enjoy my team and working for my manager. The employees here are really great too. There are many negative reviews about HPSJ here, but it seems like the negative reviews share similarities of role and department. Not all departments are like what the negative reviews say, and the CEO is super nice and genuinely wants what's best for everyone at HPSJ (including the health plan members). Of course, some people in management aren't too fun to work with (like every other company), but most of them are cordial and do try their best during their busy schedules.  Don't be afraid to apply and try this place out! The pay is great, time off is great, and HPSJ management is going through a transformation (slowly but steady and upward) partly due to the new CEO and new CPO. 

Work is 8a-5p Mon-Fri with some departments requiring overtime based on workload. Depending on your team/department, you can learn a lot about health care administration and management at the medicaid level. 

Middle management used to be ok but leadership has always been a point of contention for staff. Most of the good managers are gone both the non-clinical and clinical areas and it shows. The workplace culture has gone downhill because of it - blame shifting, not wanting to fix their problems, refusing to collaborate and communicate with other departments, etc. HR is also a nightmare and if the staff wasn't mostly unionized, they'd be screwed in regard to benefits.

Hardest part of the job is the sheer workload since state regulations have changed and most departments are short-staffed, as well as having to navigate the worsening work culture and politics.

Most enjoyable part of the job is some of the folks who work there are there for the patients, not the company, and are pleasant people to work with. Depends on the department.

Working hours for someone in a full time position on a salary is way beyond what is normal. Employees should not have to work close to 50-60 hours a week to be able to keep up with all assignments and projects at hand. Had experienced myself, and seen many others expected to get on calls 1-2 hours after normal business hours by leaders. Working hard and going the extra mile is not recognized across the board, only for those who are favored by senior and executive leadership. Voicing concerns  even in the most respectful manner is strongly discouraged, especially by executive and senior leadership. I observed excellent leaders leave the company from multiple departments as a result of being treated very poorly by those whom they report to. Great disservice to the community served. 

I had a very disappointing experience working for Health Plan of San Joaquin. The work environment was toxic, due to the manager. Management style was overly micromanaged, which created unnecessary stress and frustration among the team. Morale within the TCS team was consistently low, and many of the talented and dedicated staff have left for other health plans with better environments.
HPSJ appears to be very top-heavy, with an excessive focus on management at the expense of staff well-being. The Transition of Care (TOC) manager was the worst I've encountered—unprofessional and unsupportive. The supervisor could have been decent, but unfortunately, she tended to follow the manager's lead rather than advocate for the team.
Overall, I would not recommend working at HPSJ based on my experience, as the workplace culture and management practices significantly impacted job satisfaction.


HPSJ has Calpers retirement, that's the best perk.  We no longer have Sick time so you will have to use your vacation time, raises are pretty much 1-3% a year for meeting expectations and even exceeding them.  High turnover due to toxic environment, roughly 23% of staff a year.  

 At one point it was my favorite job, now it has turned into probably the worst job ever.  The management we have are all third rate rejects from the bay area who like to squash employees enthusiastic drive and rely instead on threats and micro managing to accomplish their goals.  Managements goals is not to improve efficiency and help the community, it is to cut staff over head so they can afford to receive big bonuses and the administrative costs stay the same.

Interviewed for a higher level position, however was recruited to work at entry level. Daily duties consisted of filing and auditing for completeness and correctness of all personnel files with occassional data entry and other projects. Learned the culture and environment. My Manager was very professional, engaging and open minded. The work atmosphere beyond my area was not always friendly and helpful and made it a bit challenging in completing projects. Most enjoyable was my area as the manager and those in that area were always friendly, helpful and willing to give me new projects to increase my responsibility.

Hours are variable. HR will work with Staff for desirable hours to be worked.
Management is currently restructuring as there have been many changes from CEO down.
Co-worker support is superior. There are extreemly hard working individuals in the company. 
Hardest part of job is policy and procedure management.
Autonomy is an attainable goal for professionals.
Telecommuting and working from home is another attainable goal for professionals.

The company itself talks a good talk but fails to deliver.  The employees are rarely recognized or praised for hard work and it shows with the high turnover and poor morale. Management seems to be more about back biting and bullying than encouragement of growth and promotion of teamwork.  Office politics are ridiculous.  The only benefit that makes it worth staying for any amount of time is the Calpers retirement.  Future employees beware this is not the place you want to work!

This company has super strict expectations in my opinion, they give you a few weeks of a power point presentation training and then send you off on your own and expect you to just get it. They have a very strict schedule adherence that they want you to follow and even going to the bathroom will mess with your adherence score. The pay and benefits are great, honestly the best part of the job... but it seems like if they took more time to thoroughly train their customer service reps they would have a better chance at keeping employees.
