HRI Hospital

The hospital is chronically understaffed and disorganized.  This creates a highly stressful environment for staff and patients. There are some excellent nurses and mental health workers who are on staff but management doesn't care about providing a therapeutic work environment or meeting the needs of staff or patients.  It's all about the company making money, which seems to be their number one priority, even if it jeopardizes the health and safety of everyone.  Most people don't last more than a year because, even though you might get some good experience, the stress just isn't worth it. They burn everyone out.  Nurses rarely even have time to take any breaks, even for meals because the workload is so demanding and the patients are so acute and need so much attention. They discourage hearing feedback from staff and have monthly mandatory staff meetings, most of which keep adding more and more tasks to be done when staff is already stretched to maximum capacity.  Training and orientation is grossly inadequate and new employees often feel confused and overwhelmed because there is so much to learn and not enough support.

The staff that trains here is friendly and helpful. But other than that there are very few employees who are nice and actually enjoy their job. Most employees here have been there a while and have the personality of a brick wall. They will lay down the rules and break them right in front of you. The environment isn’t welcoming at all. The nurses think they’re superior just because they’re RNs. The work culture sucks and I never feel like being there and obsessively watch the clock ti my shift is over. I don’t feel like I’m learning anything or helping patients. The nurses don’t know anything about approaching patients with psychiatric issues. They talk to patients like they’re garbage. I haven’t been there that long and I’m ready to leave. It’s tiring and I just get bullied and inappropriate commentary from patients.  The employees think this is okay. Wish I never applied here.

This job was incredibly difficult. It is a great place to work for a couple months to get experience but it is terrible for sustainability. I was at a salary position capped at 40 hours with "incentive pay" over productivity but the incentive pay absolutely did not adequately cover the extra hours required to work (they expected like 45, 50 hours per week and only offered a couple extra hundred rather than time and a half). There was an expectation of running 3 groups per day, 1-2 intakes, and somehow juggling about 15 individual clients. The only people I knew doing the job well got there at 7 am and left at 430 while working through lunch. Another individual would stay until 5 or 6 and get there at the expected 8 am. I learned a lot but the program wasn't well managed and the expectations and pay are terrible. 

There was a time a couple of years ago when upper management (DON, ADON, and the Education Dept) were very supportive and knowledgeable. Those days are over. The current CEO is not great, either. This is a very high acuity hospital where plenty of your patients will be extremely dangerous. The counter to that is that you are trained very well in verbal de-escalation and restraints. You will learn how to be a good psych nurse or MHW very quickly at HRI out of sheer necessity. This hospital is known for what I'm describing here, and having HRI on your resume will make you a desirable hire in the near future. However, you will likely be miserable the entire time you work here, and being injured by a patient is a real possibility. Choose, but choose wisely. 

This is a great place for people with realistic expectations. It is not always glamorous and the days can be hard sometimes. But for a new grad nurse, it is the perfect place to start getting experience. Plenty of advancement opportunities if you show up and care about your patients. Management is supportive and present, bonding with your coworkers is an essential and fun part of the day. There are always overtime shifts available. A large mix of young and old staff makes for a great balance of experience in the building. Getting to know your patients and helping them achieve their goals is an unmatched "pro."

This is a stressful environment to work in especially since all of the patients are sectioned and most do not want to be there.
Staff turn over is pretty high but those who are dedicated are here to work and have been for a long time which sometimes lead to complacency.
Current management is on top of  things and have their A-game going. Staff welfare is at an all time high and patient care at a high standard.
Staff get raise each year and transition from current position to any level of opening including administration  is pretty common. Staff rise to the top if tge are qualified


The company is a great place to learn and it is somewhat a teaching  phacility.

The typical day at work in very busy.

I have learned how to communicate with people for all diffrent back rounds and indivisual life circumstances.

Management is very team oriented and goal fucussed.

The culture is a very diversed within a mental health service community.

The hardest part is wittnessing the day to day issues that client's have to struggle through on a daily basis.

The most enjoyable part of the job is wirttnessing client's acheive their goals to make the life situtations better.

I tried to stay here for at least 6 months and I couldn't by the 3rd month of employment I was burnt. I stuck it through until the 5th month and by then I was both mentally and physically exhausted. 

This job has poor quality for its employees. Its employees already has a difficult tasks with working with this population (severely mentally ill clients) and yet the employer doesn't provide enough support for staff. There are NO security guards. Let me repeat: THERE ARE NO SECURITY GUARDS. If a staff got injured by the clients, the staff cannot defend themselves.

No security, stressful workplace. Wouldn’t recommend if you had experience but it is a good starting point for college graduates. Love the people I work with but NP is rude and think she is better than the nurses and MHWs. Management does not care about your well being. But other than that, I enjoy my nurse and MHW colleagues. Depending on severity of patients diagnosis, they are usually okay. Once you leave this job and go to another job, you would be glad you had the experience of a high paced work environment.

I wish I could say that I had a good experience with HRI but that would be an out right lie. All the leadership cares about is filling there pockets with money and could careless about the people that work under them leaving the hospital short staffed and having no regard for employees or patients safety. There is so much potential here but they need to change leadership across the board and start over with all new leaders starting with their CEO and Director Of Nurses both guys who only care about juicing there egos.
