Hackensack Meridian Pascack Valley and Mountainside

Speaking from experience, I would be extremely cautious about accepting a job from this hospital.  Make sure if you accept a job to get everything in writing.  I was told by the hiring manager and 2 supervisors that the training period for the job I applied for was 4-6 weeks.  Unfortunately I didn't get this in writing.  I was given 1 week(and that was without a working computer for 3 of the 5 days) to become an expert at this job.  My training consisted of 3 different people training me in 3 different ways which complicated things greatly.  Two of us were hired at the same time and the other person started 2 days after I did.  The very next day after she was started, suddenly I was told by the department manager that the job didn't seem like a good fit.  The very next day, while I was in the middle of working, the manager called me into personnel and let me go because she said it wasn't a good fit.  The night before I had spoken to my immediate supervisor and she led me to believe that everything was fine but if there were issues after 3 weeks, then it would be a problem.  So apparently, it was only the manager who had an issue with me. To me it seems that they hired 2 of us with the intention of keeping only 1 and since the other person had 10 years hospital experience, I was the one who was let go.  I had left a job with close to 5 years experience to accept this job, which had obviously been misrepresented to me from the outset.  Fortunately my former employer rehired me knowing how good a worker I am.  Unfortunately I was never given the chance to prove that to this hospital.

Cant vauch for the med/surg floors that typically get a bad rep, but I came into the women's services units (postpartum, l&d, nicu) without any prior experience in the specialty and honestly, I loved it. This hospital is a smaller community hospital, so it was slower paced, great for learning, everyone knows each other and 8 out of 10 of your coworkers are great team members. Parking lot is across the street. Cafeteria has good breakfast, ok lunches. Management is not perfect, sometimes nitpicks over small details (ofc). But as long as you do your job, I've never had major problems. Always got my breaks. Biggest issues was doctors not communicating with EACHOTHER and expecting nurses to do the work for them. But other than that, I honestly loved it here. My base pay w no exp was around 45, PLUS nights, L&D specialty pay and weekends differentials too; so pay wasnt too bad for a small hosp. Loved my time there honestly. Oh but the benefits kinda sucks not gonna lie lol. I think the raises werent that great either. Also there was alot of contracted nurses. They need more permanent staff full/part timers for consistency. 4/5 stars lol

Working at Mountainside has provided me with many opportunities for professional development and growth.  There are many intentional ways that leadership goes out of their way to show appreciation and consideration for the hard work done on a daily basis.  Working in healthcare, especially as we exit a pandemic, is overwhelming.  But at Mountainside the friendly, supportive, and encouraging environment makes you excited to come to work every day.  The leadership works diligently to enhance the daily experiences of their teams for positive patient satisfaction and safety outcomes.  Without the team of staff working in collaboration with the executive and leadership teams, there would be no patients.  The friendly and immersive culture is founded on the same shared goal of providing excellent customer service and patient care--and that common goal makes all the difference.

I spent a few years at Mountainside Hospital. I was in the float pool med-surg/step-down unit. 

Pros: my team was amazing. I adored my coworkers and usually everyone worked well together. The medical benefits were not bad either. 

Cons: Management. I was forced  as Charge RN and never offered the position. My former manager came to literally micro-manage us at any hour of the day AND night. Being called on my DAY off because I forgot to put in I&Os. It’s totally unacceptable and unprofessional. 

There was rarely any breaks. 7-8 patients per nurse, sometimes CNAs had the entire unit or we had no CNAs. The supervisors were two-faced.

 They’ll slam you with admissions if you bring up how dangerous it was to get back to back admissions without even finishing getting report. 

They send you to other floors so the nurses can have 5 patients all night and your floor suffers with 7-8 plus admissions. 

It’s a revolving door. I’m glad I left. I’ll never go back. The pay is terrible for the amount of work you do. 

I currently work at Hackensack Meridian Mountainside Medical Center in Montclair, NJ and from day one as an intern to now as a full time employee, I have been welcomed with open arms and have always been treated with the utmost respect. The Hospital’s management teams and department supervisors want each and everyone of the hospital’s team members to succeed in their given positions. Workplace culture and safety are at the forefront of Mountainside’s mission not only for their patient’s but their team members as well. Mountainside promotes an atmosphere of success and quality care. I have learned so much from my supervisor and fellow nurses and exercise physiologists that I work with. I walk into work every day with a smile on my face because I know the job that my colleagues and I do is impactful on those that we help rehabilitate. 

Being a volunteer at Mountainside Hospital on the Transitional Care Unit was an experience I will never forget.

I worked with great doctors and nurses who truly had a passion for what they do. That energy was contagious! I was able to learn and take in a lot of information which in turn allowed me to perform to the best of my ability. 

I was able to help care for Geriatric patients with most of their requests to assure they had a pleasant stay.

The hardest part of my job was sometimes having to deal with a rude patient, but was able to move forward with my duties understanding that they were more than likely in pain, nervous, etc...

The most enjoyable part of my job was being able to help patients when they needed it the most and seeing how happy that made them.

As a Labor and Delivery Surgical Technologist my day to day duties includes but not limited to, assisting Physicians in first scrub role with GYN cases such as C-section, Tubal Ligations, Cerclage placements/removals, and Emergency Hysterectomys when needed. I also am responsible for post partum patient care and assist by taking vitals, EKG's, as well as blood work ordered by physicians. I work well with others and assist co-workers as well as above management with any necessary duties to maintain a safe and satisfactory workplace. The most difficult part of my job is the demanding roles of both a scrub tech and patient care persons throughout the day, however the most enjoyable part of my job is being in the Operating Room.

A typical day at work requires continuous prioritizing of tasks to give patient care priority. Multitasking is a given from managing the library, co-workers and volunteers to simplest task of interlibrary loans requests. The job taught me the importance of health information for patients and their physicians; it taught me that knowledge is the essential basis of informed decisions in healthcare. 
The hardest part of the job is not being able to find the information needed to save a patient's life but the most enjoyable and rewarding part is working with a physician to find the information he/she needs to save their patients lives or help them recover quickly and lead a healthy lifestyle. A very rewarding job indeed.

I worked at HUMC at PV for almost 5 years. 5 years of torture. My first Director in Case Management used to harass me all the time. Every time she saw me she would say "what are you doing." My second Director who is still there not only harassed me but bullied me and made personal comments about me. For example you talk to loud or you have body odor. She volunteered me for everything and was not flexible if you needed a day off. Their philosophy is no mean nothing to them. They do not care about you or that you have a life. The hardest part of the job is that you have to take the criticism from my Director as well as Administration and you still have to smile. Most enjoyable part of the job was leaving at 5pm everyday.  What I learned is never ever trust management.

Viewing client calls.  Assigning work to techs. Providing client service directly wherever needed. Providing status report to end user managers and to leadership. Packaging and forwarding defective equipment and receiving and distributing equipment arrived post repair. Ensuring all work is done in timely manner. Ensuring regulatory compliance. Most annoying days:  When too many calls come at the same time on some days. Very friendly staff. Very understanding leadership. Current Biomed team is very diverse in culture and background.   Overall:  Enjoyable, and would not like to leave, except for corporate policy changes that seem to be forming.
