Working the evening shift we would arrive promptly at 4pm. To start the day we would have this procedure called the take five which was held Monday< Wednesday, and Friday. Take five was very important because not only did it bring us closer as a team but we also found out different techniques to deal with patients and employees concerning their safety. We learned how to stop spreading disease through proper hand washing and we practiced this collectively as a team. This was a great opportunity to ask questions and to find out how your floor was doing because sometimes we had good reviews and sometimes we had some bad ones, but it helped us learn from our mistakes. Management was good but needs improvement because we were short staffed numerous times and we also did not have all of our supplies most of the times but overall I would say management did a pretty good job handling situations. The atmosphere was great. M co workers were respectful and usually a helping hand. We had some lazy co workers but when you are a leader, it was good to lead by example to spread the positive energy around the team. The hardest part about my job was probably getting supplies for the team and making sure everything was set for the beginning of the shift and for the shift after. The most enjoyable part of my job was the co workers and the take fives because it gave us a break from work and also taught us how to do things the proper way when it came to preventing disease or even dealing with patients that were in isolation. During isolation we had to be observant to make sure we were taking the proper precautions in order to keep our families and ourselves safe from infectious diseases. Hackensack hospital has taught me a lot on how to handle different situations that require quick thinking, being fast paced and also being able to communicate properly through verbal and nonverbal communication skills to make the patient and their families feel comfortable and most importantly safe.

I worked in two very different departments. They each had their pros and cons. My dialysis experience was positive, even though at times the management could be difficult to relate to. I developed close ties to my patients as many hours of my life were spent withthem. My co-workers were wonderful and I still keep friends I made in the department. For me, the most difficult part was the on-call, I did what I had to do but found it disruptive. My sleep was interupted many times, I had to push a heavy machine around the hospital to bring to the patient's room. Otherwise my job was rewarding and enjoyable.
My HomeCare experience was completly different. My bosses were the most wonderful, caring and supportive supervisors any could wish for. Several of them are also retired now and we continue to meet regularly for lunch outings. This job was the most rewarding, My visits to patients homes were overall extremely pleasant. I developed much love for them as they for me. I learned much from my patients both in the dialysis department as well as home care. I learned to appreciate every moment of life as we never know when illness or disability could strike. My nursing career brought me much joy and some frustration but those are things that come with life.

1. Provides direct hygiene and comfort care to patients including bathing, toileting, oral hygiene, incontinent care, and bed making.

2. Takes vital signs under the direction of the RN, and documents accordingly on appropriate flow sheets, and notifies the RN of the results.

3. Performs and documents glucose finger sticks and collects other specimens including stool, urine, and sputum.

4. Obtains and documents daily patient weights and observes and documents patient's intake and output.

5. Provides a safe patient environment by answering call lights promptly, communicating with the RN immediately for any change in patient's condition.

6. Acts in the role of patient sitter.

7. Maintains a clean and safe nursing unit and patient room

8. Identifies the needs of the patient population served and modifies and delivers care that is specific to those needs (i.e., age, culture, hearing and/or visually impaired, etc.). This process includes communicating with the patient, parent, and/or primary caregiver(s) at their level (developmental/age, educational, literacy, etc.).

9. Adheres to the standards identified in the Medical Center's Organizational Competencies.

Assignment of 4-5 couplets, 12 shift.  Making rounds, getting the patients ready for the day. Assessment/vitals signs of mother and baby.  Keeping track of lab work for mother and newborn.  Making sure all of the newborns 24 hour screening's are completed.  Keeping track of the newborns feedings, wet and dirty diapers.  Communicating with interdisciplinary team as needed.  Rotation into the admission nursery, where the newborns came up from L&D.  The newborns were transitioned to be able to go out to the mother's room. Educating the parents on newborn care and breastfeeding.

The management would make decisions and change how things were done on the unit without getting input from the nurses.  The management did not know what we did on a day to day basis and how their changes would affect the nurses.

Workplace culture: fast paced

The hardest part of the job was being in the admissions nursery transitioning the new born.  Sometimes they required the skills of the NICU. Keeping up with what was going on with the newborns already in the mothers room.

The most enjoyable part of the job was making a connection with the parents and their families.

I worked as a Nutrition Assistant at Hackensack University Medical Center in Hackensack, NJ for 8 months. During this time, I had the opportunity to work with a team of nice people who created a positive and supportive work environment.

One of the highlights of my job was the learning experience. I gained a lot of knowledge about nutrition and patient care, which has been invaluable in my career growth. The role provided me with hands-on experience and a deeper understanding of the field.

The supervisors at the center were great and helpful, always ready to guide and support us in our tasks. Their leadership and mentorship significantly enhanced my work experience.

Interacting with patients was mostly a great experience. It was rewarding to be able to assist them and contribute to their healthcare journey.

Overall, I am happy that I worked there. The experience was enriching, the work environment was positive, and the learning opportunities were abundant. I would definitely recommend this role to others interested in nutrition and patient care.

Yes, they tout themselves as the "best hospital" in NJ ... that's subjective. In the almost 6 years here, I saw first hand the low level of patient satisfaction. The ONLY thing senior leadership cares about is their profit margin. They do not respect or care about the mid level and lower level staff and many physicians do not feel respected and supported. Many do not respect the leadership. Your comments/suggestions/complaints will only be respected if they are in line with those of your supervisor; if they don't feel the same way or feel you aren't "conforming" then they'll make it horrible for you until you leave. President and CEO is a yes man who wants to be "liked" by the board and not respected. Lastly, don't donate money to them - take a deep look at their fundraising ratio - staff salaries and event spending average about 90% of every dollar donated. Do your research before working or donating here.

my coworkers were the only positive thing about working here. teamwork was great and communication was effective RN to RN.

staffing is always horrible for both RNS and NAs. 7/10, you WILL be floated to another unit or the ED due to how short it is. management sucks. of course they care more about patient boards being filled out than the fact that they barely have any staff. as an RN, its like you are just a number to fill the gaps. no care or recognition on just how hard staff members work. due to poor staffing, your put in very unsafe conditions with your patient/nurse ratio. This was all occurring wayyy before covid and still continues to this day. 

it gets so busy during the shift that you can't even take your break. charge nurses have heavy patient loads as well so there's only so much they can do to help. the supervisors overnight try their best to help out but there's only so much they can do when the problems are above them.

THEY NEED TO DO BETTER FOR THEIR NURSES!

In my position the day was busy from the minute I stepped into my  office to the minute I went home.  I learned to fend for myself as others mostly depended on me.  My immediate manager was a wonderful boss, however the new administration seems to have lost the meaning of patient care and is only focused on their personal financial gains.  My co-workers' work ethic was much different than mine.  No one ever walked into my office and found me on a personal phone call or texting on my personal devices.  The hardest part of my job was dealing with the many personalities of the physicians, but I managed to always be amicable and I was well liked by all.  What I most enjoyed about my position was always being asked to handle many projects and was trusted to complete them with little or no supervision; I felt that my manager and other members of his staff truly admired my abilities and my work ethics.

My typical day at work included transcribing medical reports from a multidisciplinary team to include pediatricians, speech and language pathologists, and learning consultants.  Duties also included keeping track of our typed reports and editing them on a database program.  When needed, we would also work the front desk upstairs, file in the medical records room, distribute our reports to the clinicians and perform new patient intakes in the Intake Office over the phone.

I left my employment at Hackensack Medical Center to move to Florida ten years ago to live closer to family.  I enjoyed working with my co-workers and still call them friends.  I can't think of a hardest part of the job.  I always work to the best of my ability and am conscientious about my performance.  The most enjoyable part of the job was working together as a team to get the job done.  Work assignments were always being varied and we were never bored.

I developed an MSO which eventually evolved into the institutions Faculty Practice. The MSO started out with 9 practitioners and the Faculty Practice eventually grew to over 300 practitioners from all specialties including a Children's hospital and all emergency and Trauma services. I continued to plot the strategic direction for the Faculty Practice, creating and overseeing all financial aspects of the business and managing each practice site thru direct involvement with the practice managers. I interviewed all new physician members and negotiated their contracts.I also continued to manage the IPA and PHO securing managed care contracts for both organizations.
