A typical day at work consisted of counting and consolidating products. Receiving and helping with shipping if necessary. The training of temp staff was also included in daily operations. Considering the circumstances, I learned a significant amount of information about the varying cuts of beef and standards of quality(self taught). I also gained information about different species of fish and those which are of the Scombridae family that can produce a deadly toxin:histamine (Scombroid) if not kept at certain temps or beginning to rot. Management, night and day shift, are very biased and I must include that they are family. All of their decisions made concerning an employees advancement are bigoted, which is not embellished well, biased and based also on the foundation of nepotism which is how they control the work environment and positions to the disadvantage of the most capable and loyal employees purposely overlooking those with lengthy tenure as well. So, if your aren't Caucasian just mentally prepare yourself because it becomes taxing and stressful over time.The culture there is unsupportive, underhanded,untrustworthy and toxic. This unethical regressive way of function bred super high turnover rates and racial discrimination suites. The internal fighting and politics stifles the growth,ideas and results that can be attained if fair treatment and professionalism took the helm. The hardest part of the job was dealing with the fact that no matter how hard you work or how loyal you were to the benefit of the company, compensation and or advancement was minimal to non existent; depending on who you were. The most enjoyable part of the job was learning new aspects of the food industry, building customer relationships and going home.

A typical work day  at Halpern's consists of one 15 minute status meeting.  I learned to differentiate better purchasing (Sales via Purchase Orders) and Supplier Invoices which are items typically purchased on demand.  The management team is very hands off and serve to provide us with whatever is needed to complete our tasks and create a quality product.  Because, the IT and business teams are close proximity, the business needs and desires are more easily and conveyed.  The hardest part of the job is to grasp the functionality of financial systems and improve within a new system.  The most enjoyable part of the job is completing my tasks and producing a functional system according to the business standards.

Halpern's Mid-Atlantic handles a large routine daily workload from their chain accounts. Their purchasing power from a national buying perspective gives them a competitive edge in meat and frozen seafood. 

Current leadership promotes from within giving all team member a reason to work smart.

This position afforded the opportunity to contribute my skills to improve upon the dry aging room daily hands on rotation, reach optimum yields and overall organization. Setting a new process for team members to follow to achieve a FIFO product flow. Daily cycle counts followed by month end inventory proved this process was working.

What is the best part of working at the company?
You will find a couple of people that are nice and have good ways. Other than that, nothing else. Work hard and get paid the minimum. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
When the company is making 2.5X more profits then when you started working there, and you get a .25 cent raise. Truck loads from $18,000 to $35-$40,000 and you get no raise. No miles driven, load pay or anything. Just a flat rate of $760 weekly. For heavy hard work. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Regarding the company, not good. People you meet on your route are way better.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Hard to get out of bed to go to work

They don't train you. Just feed you to the wolves. Been a meat cutter for a long time and have never been thrown through so much in such a short amount of time. Management threatening to take physical actions on you after hours. No training videos. They don't express how long you'll be on the shift. You punch in at 6am and you'll be lucky to get out at 5-6pm. Lack of information and lack of transparency. No management on the floor that is helpful. They will let you stand around brand new not knowing what to do or how to help because you have no training, then be upset with you for it. 0/10 will never recommend working for Halperns, and left that place so disgusted  I don't want to even shop at GFS anymore. 

I got the most  professional welcome from every person I have met from day one all the way to parting day due to covid 19. I will miss every person I worked with and came to interact with between NJ,  Baltimore MD and Atlanta GA. The company kept all employees as long as it was possible and parted with us in the most professional, human and civilized way there is. It’s strange that we have to notice what should be a norm everywhere - but we know it’s not. So when we find people, employer like that we would like to work with them a lifetime. 

Terrible place to work, horrible management they have 3 managers or supervisors there they are good for nothing one guy call himself director of operations, what a clown! , he seats all day at the office doing nothing he has no idea of anything, his behavior is pathetic,  overall terrible place to work you’ll love everyday there with stress at its fullest, my recommendation go work somewhere else unless you want to go experience how terrible this company is and all it’s terrible management, you will go every morning hating going to that place and leave to your route already stress a 7 in the morning.

Does not follow proper HR company procedures. You will be undervalued and raises are only 60 cents unless you decide to work overtime.

You work goes unappreciated and they make you do more work without proper raise.

More work less pay. Plus they talk bad about you behind your back.

Clock in, do everyone's work plus your own without a proper raise clock out, they call you at home.

You had supervisor who would take your idea into consideration. Also cared about your personal being.

Only when it's not enough people.
