Health Alliance Plan of Michigan

Working for Health Alliance Plan is a new concept for me. While my resume says that I have worked with them for 3 years, I actually was part of a company that was acquired in 2016. HAP is a good company all in all, the really are. The only issue that I have is that they are stuck in the past with much of their policies. Their dress code has not been updated since 1992, their management style is top down, and the company culture is "I'm in at 8, out at 5, keep my head down and stay in my cubicle". They are a part of the Henry Ford Health System and I find that even though we do not work in the hospital, we must still abide by their rules (dress code, holidays (only 6), etc.
Things are changing for HAP currently and I hope that it continues to change. With a new CEO there are new policies being looked at and with this I hope that they find themselves in the 21st century, where whether corporate America likes it or not, Millennial's are the future of the job force. 
Besides the culture, I find that it is hard to move up in the company due to it being so big, it's easy to get lost in the array of people that work for them. While I have been afforded the luxury of great benefits until this point, I can't give credit to HAP as I am still receiving benefits from the previous company and will not be a part of HAP/Henry Ford until 1/1/18. 

Overall, it's not a terrible place to work if you literally want to come in, do your job, and leave. There are many volunteer opportunities (on weekends), and I'm finding that HAP is truly trying to bring their game to 2017. I hope this happens, truly. They pay their employees well (so I've heard) but I'm not sure if that's enough.

The work day begins early with the arrival of cheerful management and staff ready to take on any challenge.  Staff meetings are conducted to determine the immediate needs and review the successes of the previous day.  With marching orders in hand the day to day tasks are assigned and performed.  Continuous followup and status reporting is conducted throughout the day in order to provide customers with feedback.  Longer term projects are worked on keeping deliverables and timelines at the forefront.  Staff continually keep management updated on progress and roadblocks that may affect the success of a project.  Management works diligently to remove roadblocks and respond to the staff concerns.  As the day draws to a close staff and management meet to recognize the accomplishments of the day and make preparations to start again in the morning.

During my tenure at Health Alliance Plan I learned about the importance of managed health care, its impact on health care costs and the benefits that managed health care brings to individuals, families and communities.

Management at HAP are mission driven and stand with their staffs to bring the best possible deliverables to their customers.

I was blessed to work with highly qualified and and skilled professionals.

The hardest part of my job was retiring and moving on to the next phase of my life.

The most enjoyable part of my job was helping and watching my staff grow personally and  professionally.

Health Alliance Plan (HAP)has afforded me several opportunities to develop as a leader. I have been able to grow in the areas of training, classroom facilitation,management, project administration, and expanding my knowledge in heathcare. A typical day as a supervisor involves monitoring telephone queues, staff workloads, work volumes, ensuring adherence to schedules, and attending departmental and/or company meetings  related to changes in processes and guidlines.  As a call center supervisor, I also assist with answering calls and assisting with members in our customer service lobby. The hardest part of the job involves dealing with employee-union issues, where no compromise or resolution is possible. The most enjoyable part of the job is the ability to develop staff to move on to a better position or to inspire staff to perform better.

Pros: They start at 19.27 in Customer Service. This is a union position with the UAW Local 600.

Cons: No breaks. New management has no health care experience. No room for advancement. Management refers to Hap as "The Titanic". Hap had to lay off 175 people due to poorly managing large employer groups. They micro manage bathroom breaks.No walking or talking on the floor. Felt like county jail. Management was made aware of HIPPA and CMS violations and knowingly turned a blind eye.

The corporate office is privy to all new procedures but slow to distribute to satellite offices. Managers do not share information with each other and many times employees are instructed to do things differently since information is not shared. Employees are then reprimanded because the newest procedure was not followed.Any discipline is emailed and copied to every supervisor, manager, and sometimes fellow employees even when it does not pertain to them.  Department rules change daily. Information is mailed to customers before employees have been informed causing confusion and bad customer service experiences.

What is the best part of working at the company?
The best part was the teammates you gained family not just friends. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The leadership failed to acknowledge the inconsistencies and listen to the front line staff that addressed the public daily. Regardless of education and job title you can still learn from someone. The leadership has solely made that company fail in being a excellent helatjcatr provider in the SOM.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Stressful and depressing daily. You never knew if leadership was looking to cilut your position; instead of being so top heavy. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Working with members to resolve their insurnace concerns.

I responded to and resolved on the first call, customer service inquires and issues by identifying the topic and type of assistance the caller needs such as benefits, eligibility and claims, financial spending accounts and correspondence.

I learned how to  educate customers about the fundamentals and benefits of consumer-driven health care topics to include managing their health and well-being by selecting the best benefit plan options, maximizing the value of their health plan benefits and choosing a quality care provider

The management staff was knowledgeable about the company.

My co-workers were hard working.

The hardest part of the job was learning the claim system programs.

I enjoyed the people I worked around.

My day starts 6:30 I sign into my work check email to see what happen after I left and see if the thing that I was having problem with was resolve.  Call the provider to give them an update and answer all question within my department. You can learn something new each day when it come to clams one little thing can make a issue for the company.  I had the best manager ever she was kind and understanding will to help you advance. If you don't made thing personal you will be able to relate to your co-worker. The worst part of the job was when I wasn't able to get the information needed to provider get service to our customer.  the people was the most enjoyable part we would raise money at the company to go on trip or have a pinic

What I learned is, I'm here to service my membership with allowing them to understand the job is getting done effective and accurately with resolution.

Management is working hard to make improvements to effectively do your job. 

The hardest part of the job is when your working on an email cases and a call come in and you are interrupted. Sometimes you can lose track on the case.

Enjoyable part of the job is working with great people who care and we do our best to be team players.

Management is undereducated and unwilling to educate themselves on the basic etiquette of human interaction. They are rude and play favorites. There have been multiple members of management in and out of HAP, and all seem to have the quality of not caring about their employees. The over-hall HAP experienced only placed the same kind of people in management. They have turned healthcare into a business such as Comcast, who HAP does compare themselves to; alot! I worked for the company for 4 years and was not offered an exit interview when I left. Upper management doesn't want to know what is going on within the company. I wouldn't recommend this organization to my worst enemy.
