Plan on 1-2 years before you start seeing any real money.  The first two years are learning products and building your client base.  It's rough and you have to really hustle to make ends meet.  Once you start getting commission/renewals things get easier - if you can last that long.  Hopefully you don't have a lot of expenses or you have a spouse with a regular paycheck that can support you the first few years - after that, you should be making plenty of money.

100% Performance Based - 1099 Contract so No Benefits.  This is normal for insurance agents, so no surprise.  They offer a broad range of products which I really like; however, health doesn't pay much anymore, life takes awhile to go through underwriting so that isn't immediate income, Medicare takes a few months to pay out, etc.  That means your day-to-day income is really based on the supplements you sell (dental, vision, accident, etc.)  and it takes quite a bit of supplements to earn a decent living.  It totally can be done if you are willing to put in the work.  If you are lazy or procrastinate, you will never make it in this business.  Also, the laws are changing, so it will be interesting to see where this career goes.

I enjoyed meeting and working with a diverse group of people and most of them are really nice, although you do get those rotten eggs from time to time. (As in any business - especially in the service industry.)  The more you are willing to work and learn on your own, the faster you can gain the experience needed to succeed.  You MUST be self-motivated.  Management is nice but they pretty much leave you to sink or swim on your own.  I'm fine with this - as are most agents, because you have to have an entrepreneurial mindset and won't want to be micro-managed.

Not much room for advancement, but your money grows every year as your client-base, knowledge, and experience grow; so the only reason you would want to advance is out of boredom or actually wanting to help others.

Since you are a 1099 contract, you don't get a base pay or any paid time off, 401K, health insurance, etc.  That can add up when you are trying to fund these things on your own.  If you have a spouse working a regular job and you can get on their insurance, its not a problem, but if not - plan to spend a bunch of your income on taxes, expenses, and benefits. 

What I most like is that Health Markets actually tries to do the right thing and is there to help people.  I feel good working for a company with integrity that wants you to succeed.

I worked at HealthMarkets from 2018 until January 2023, and my experience with them has been nothing short of exasperating. I'm not trying to poach clients; all I want is to regain control of my carrier contracts and move on independently. Here's what you should know about my time there:

Contract Holdup: My battle with HealthMarkets continues as I struggle to retrieve my contracts. They seem determined to keep former agents tied down, making it incredibly difficult to sever ties.

Enticement and Stagnation: HealthMarkets entices agents with advances, but this can become a trap. These advances can shackle you, making it hard to break free, even if you want to explore other opportunities.
Commission Cuts: They take significant percentages of your sales, leaving you with less income than you deserve for your hard work. This impacts your earnings substantially.

Lack of Support: The support from HealthMarkets is minimal at best. In contrast, there are many General agencies that offer excellent support to their agents without compromising on commissions.
Captive Atmosphere: HealthMarkets often creates an atmosphere that feels restrictive, akin to a W2 employment structure, but without offering the benefits that come with it.

Toxic Work Environment: My time at HealthMarkets was marred by a toxic work environment. I witnessed harassment claims that went unresolved and unaddressed, which is deeply concerning.

In conclusion, I strongly advise against working with HealthMarkets. There are better alternatives out there, like General agencies that offer support without the binding contracts and high commission cuts. Don't get trapped in a situation that leaves you feeling captive and undervalued. Your career and peace of mind deserve better.

•	Work with Medicaid Transportation agency to set up transportation for patients ensuring ability to acquire health care resources including visits to pharmacy, doctor appointments, vision center and hospital.  Maintain relationships to monitor situation.
•	Create and update internal resources database adding contact resources including difficult to find doctors/dentists, community resource contacts, and government organizations providing financial assistance; data utilized by care coordinators and   case managers as resource to gather healthcare information quickly.
•	Maintain intranet social network page by adding pictures of new and current employees, along with brief biographies, ensuring new hires are welcomed to company.  
•	Provide incoming call support directing patient calls to assigned care coordinators or case managers to expedite ability to received assistance on Medicaid sponsored health care needs and services.  
•	Utilize Predictive Pathways Modeling to determine patient eligibility to receive Medicaid resources and services including ability to work with case managers. 
•	Utilize case trackker to open cases for clients requiring case management services.  
•	Research Medicaid eligible resources including healthcare, durable medical equipment and community financial assistance ensuring clients have access to resources required to eliminate hospital stays and become self-sufficient.
•	Manage follow-up calls to clients conducting Medicaid required assessments on condition severity and current and/or on-going health care. 
•	Monitor care coordinator calls to ensure disbursement of accurate information documenting results in Excel spreadsheets used by supervisors during coaching and performance improvement sessions.

Training involved three days out of town where we sat around and listened to the managers talk about how much money they make. It almost felt like timeshare event or one of those sales seminars that provide dinner. I didn’t learn very much as the main person training us talked nonstop about himself instead of teaching us anything important. They paid for the hotel room and provided lunch, and paid for the exam and license though. So not all was lost. 

After that, it was sink or swim. There wasn’t much support or help and I felt pretty much lost. The manager wasn’t very helpful most of the time. I worked out of the office and the manager would bogart the walk in customers, which made me feel discouraged. I didn’t see my coworkers very often since we were all considered self employed and were always going place to place. The leads were terrible unless you were willing to pay up the you know what for good ones, or for advertisement. The commission structure was terrible; it went by tiers so if you were just starting you got next to nothing. 

There’s a lot of money to be made with the company if you are able to get leads on your own and know how to hustle. This can cost a lot of time and money so be prepared. Also you may not make much money at first so be sure to have money saved or someone who can help support you. That being said, the people who have made a lot of money are the same ones who invested a lot into their business. They’re also the same ones who win awards and receive recognition over and over again, which kind of puts everyone else at a disadvantage if they can’t afford to invest as much.

HealthMarkets is a greedy ruthless company. That along with how difficult it is to sell insurance in certain markets will make your life way more than difficult. HealthMarkets accounting is a nightmare to figure out. You will owe taxes on all income! If you don't account for deductions (and there are lots) you will be shocked at your tax bill. Their lead system will bankrupt you very quickly if you don't manage it carefully. The company is greedy with pushing you to "put more money in your pocket"; which they take a big percentage from you. You must sell something within 10 weeks or you are terminated! The ruthless part is when you leave the company your license will be locked with them for 6 months (contract changed in 2016) even if you pay any amount you owe them quickly. This is just a horrible policy to people who try and make insurance a career but fail.

The sales leaders are very biased toward people who feed their egos and make them look good with plenty of sales. If the sales leader doesn't like you they will not help you and you will die! I can count 5 agents in my agency that had that happen to them.

There is a tremendous amount to learn, which will be non-productive time for you. Everything from in-house systems, government regulations, carrier certifications (those done yearly) and learning what not to do when it comes to compliance and good practice.

The changes in the health care law mean no more under 65 commissions from the carriers, along with fewer carriers offering coverage. Clients under 65 are feeling the high cost of coverage and they will complain to you a lot. Another thing to consider is the supply of career agents you will compete with. There are lots of them!

When I joined Health Markets in November 2011. I thought it was a lot of smoke and mirrors, from the interview process, to the group meetings I was a little concerned. I know I could sell and I needed a job or my wife was going to through me out. I had lost my job due to the economic down turn and I needed a job that was going to compensate me they way I wanted and would let me work at my own pace.  I found that with Health Markets and have never looked back. The structure of the company is poised for Health Care Reform. The access to the carriers, the products, the training is unlimited. Not to mention being paid for what you sell within 48 business hours is great for cash flow. The stock program is also amazing. Not to mention the Super Trips, like Cancun and Maui 2014.(I can't wait)  
I had heard from old salesman about the way sales used to be in the world and how you could be appreciated for the work you do, but I didn't believe that culture existed anymore after working in corporate America for 15 years. Well it does at Health Markets and they help me reach my goals. In the 3 short years that I will be at Health Markets I will have increased my income 600% from year one and tripled it in to the 6 figure category that I know I am worth and I know will only grow more. Health Markets has also given me the ability to own my own store front office and grow my sales team exponentially. If you give a 100% they give a 100% back. The most amazing fact is I earned this, I wasn't awarded this career, I earned it. If you are a go getter than Health Markets is the place for you to soar beyond belief.

When I first started at HealthMarkets I really loved it! The typical day at work was to answer incoming phone calls from insureds and providers. I would go over the benefits of thier policies, which most insureds didn't understand because private insurance is totally different from group insurance. I would send back claims that didn't process correctly so the insured would receive the correct benefits. Would also verify benefits for providers that called in to see what the insured's benefits were for the type of treatment that they were going to receive.
I learned alot about private insurance and the difference between group insurance, Our customer base was individuals and very small business. The management was great and so were my coworkers, it was a bigger company than National HME.
The hardest part of the job was being cussed out by the insureds that didn't read their policy our understand it and they received bills on services that were not covered under their policies.
The most enjoyable part of the job was to help the insured to understand their policy even if it took one hour to go over it with them so that they did understand it. I have always loved to train and teach when somebody really does want to understand and listen, By the time you get off the phone they are not cussing you but thanking you for taking the time to explain it to them.
Most of us are gulity of not reading through all of that paper work because it is overwhelming and can be difficult to understand.

management, like everyone else in the company, are selfish sale people.  you are a contracted 1099 worker and not considered an employee. there are zero benefits included because of this 'definition' of employment.  even though you aren't an employee, you sign a contract that you can't contract with anyone else in the business while working at HM and for a year after you leave.  
you are required to attend weekly meetings that you are not paid for.  every 1 to 2 months you are expected to go to a regional meeting that can be up to a 3 hour drive or longer from your location...unpaid, once again.  

you only get paid if you sell something.  Major Medical insurance is the main product.  you get paid zero dollars for any real major medical policy you sell.  you are encouraged to 'upsell' company offered add on policies that are designed to benefit the company more than the buyer.  


the strategy of the company is to hire as many 'agents' as possible, regardless of their potential to be able to sustain a career in sales.  new agents are encouraged to sell products to their family and friends to get their business started.  even if the new hire cannot sustain a business that can provide for them and their family, it doesn't cost the company anything to keep them on board.  (they will try to convince you that it does cost them in nonsense areas like, paperwork.)  

sales leaders have access to their agents' book of business and their leads.  many sales leaders steal leads and business from the agents under them.

Health Markets is a company that allows you to serve clients with integrity and confidence, by offering products that truly protect their health and wealth! I loved working for this company and only left because of the changing dynamics of my family. This company provides everything you need to succeed. They give you leads, provide your E & O,equip you with the most awesome Agent Portal ever!!! You have access to all the marketing tools you need for free, 2nd to none training (no exaggeration) a variety of products to offer the public (putting you in demand) pay 2xs a week and carry a reputation of which you can be proud. I could go on and on, seriously. They also give you a website FREE. A phenomenal company with excellent leadership.

The hardest part of the job is getting out there generating more leads and making the phone calls to set appointments. If you do either of these things consistently, YOU WILL SUCCEED! 

The most enjoyable part of the job for me was educating clients and helping them to navigate through a very confusing healthcare system  I got so much satisfaction knowing that when I left, I left someone better off then when I came. And these words and assessment came not from me, but many of my clients. That just feels good and right, when serving people is your goal. 

I highly recommend this company and would go back in a heart beat if my situation were different and they'd have me back. : ) This is a winning team you want to be on.
