I agree with previous statements about management. There was no one to talk to. I was told never to speak to a physician about any issues in the office. I worked for one physician that would see up to 28 patients per day and they hired a NP who saw 10-12 patients per day. There was 1 LVN and 1 medical assistant for all those patients, phone calls, faxes, medication prior auths or medical prior auths, paperwork, medication refills, office procedures, replying to calls or calling back reports were very hard to manage with so many patients in the office, keeping up with senseless ligs for everything, etc. All additional office duties.  The physician would run through. "Lunch" so we would end up working Through it. All management said was for the 2 employees to manage "breaks". Asking for time off was absolutely ridiculous! 90% of patients were terribly rude and we would get cussed out for not returning calls in a timely manner and or not refilling meds is a timely manner, or not getting paperwork back in a timely manner. We were nit backed ip by mgmt or the phyician. The load was way too big for for 2 staff members.  We were told they were going to hire someone for about 6 months and it didn't happen. The job was 8-5, just to keep our heads above water we would work until 7 or 8 PM. There were definitely favorites and it was extremely noticeable. Promotions going to staff members that walked the hallway taking about decor, babies, pregnancies were the ones getting promotions. Mgmt told me  I needed to prove to them that I could be a leader for a promotion. Raises were 10-15 cents a year. I worked there for 8 years and never got a promotion. Insurance and the option to payroll deduct at Hendrick are the perks.

They only care about filling their schedule.  Your preference is a distant second. Director is absolutely clueless. They will throw you in a room that you are not comfortable in even when you tell them.  They don’t fully inform you of what you are getting in to before you start work there.  They trap you by giving you a big bonus that locks you in for 2 years.  They do this because that is the only way they can keep people.  At least half of employees there who don’t get the bonus leave.  The ones who do get the bonuses leave after their commitment is up.  For this reason, I didn’t take a bonus, and I’m glad I didn’t, because I quit after only 5 months as a staff nurse.  The OR morale is EXTREMELY LOW.  People aren’t there to help you.  People here are very negative and will go out of their way to make it hard for you.  They have their little cliques and play favorites on a daily basis.  Just look at the turnover for the past two years and that says it all.  They treat the CST students and PA Students horribly who rotate through the OR.  I didn’t rotate here in nursing school (thank God) but I honestly havnt seen any nursing students here.  I also strongly question some of the practices in this operating room.  Whoever voted this place a top place to work has not worked in the OR.  Pay is okay for the size of the town, but they are still on the low side of the pay scale.  I worked in a town smaller than Abilene after I left Hendrick and got paid more than I made at Hendrick.  They probably have not done a market survey in years.  They hire mostly new grads because experienced people pass it up because they know pay is much lower than national standard for their size.

When the hospital was Abilene Regional, it was a wonderful place to work. Then, through a political SNAFU, the State of Texas allowed for Hendrick Health to become the only hospital choice for patients here in Abilene, Texas, Hendrick Medical South and Hendrick Medical Center North/Corporate. Hendrick Health is a non-profit health organization, run like a for-profit organization. Hendrick Health also owns many competing businesses in this community with their hands in many pots. For example, home health & hospice, inpatient/outpatient rehab, ER clinics, orthopedics, medical supply, orphanage, health spa, fitness gym, etc. The list is long and exhaustive. Hendrick Health receives grants from the government, and part of the hoop jumping, is to provide community-based programs. Salary was sub-par, and lower than most other healthcare organizations, but with the added stress and pressure of high productivity expectations for exempt employees to go above and beyond typical responsibilities. Some of the "managers" exhibited bullying behaviors with constant disruptions, condescending tone, thus decreasing productivity while increasing time pressure demands a'la micromanagement model of the intensely insecure. 

From a nursing standpoint this is a very antiquated system, EHR is a joke, they do not use a nationally recognized platform. Very few standard protocols, evidence based protocols are not utilized, the nursing staff is young and inexperienced, turnover is ridiculous, mandatory overtime for full time nurses. The number of travel nurses at this facility is greater than anywhere I have ever worked. On any given shift there were anywhere from 2-4 travel nurses including the charge nurse. Nursing staff does not assist the patient care techs, a lot of socializing, personal phone use(constant), no regular patient rounding, critical thinking skills are seriously lacking. Nursing management is for the most part inexperienced in the fundamentals of managing people. And the religious aspect of the culture is over the top. 
On the positive, some of the best techs I have ever worked with.

I will start out by saying that I loved my coworkers and my patients, it was really the corporate aspect of Hendrick that I did not enjoy. It's pretty hard to get a raise that reflects the work you've done, you can work as hard as you want and end up with barely $0.30 at the end of the year (the highest you can get is a 3% increase and they do not try to give you that much). In the medical assistant position it is really hard to move up the clinical ladder and they do not offer much support. If they can get you to do extra tasks they will, but you will not be rewarded or thanked for it. The health insurance they give you (that you will pay for) is not the greatest either. I loved my job but the corporate culture there does not align with their mission statement, and there is definitely a reason they have a high turnover rate. It's a good place to start your career but I would not recommend staying long term. 

I enjoyed working with my coworkers.  They were always willing to help one another and were very concerned about their patients.  The problem(s) in my department stemmed from the administration's unwillingness to allow us to have a department manager with the power to effect positive change.  The department is staffed with good employees who desire to learn more and want expanded responsibilities.  However, the medical staff and administration view the department as strictly subservient and somewhat unnecessary. This view is antiquated and insulting to most professional clinicians, thus most work without hope of offering the community improved services.  The physicians are congenial and very approachable.  However, to their detriment, they cannot see the advantages of actively pursuing improved services and educational structures.

The supervisor we had never helped us out when they came to being short he said he’s not gonna come out and help us work and we’re short or short we have to work for self for Friday Saturday and Sunday for 12 hour shifts they don’t appreciate anything anyway thank you. He never backed us up on anything I think he was just there for the pay other supervisors didn’t care how we felt and healthwise and being shorthanded does not help the patient get the labs they need and the nurses were not even happy they were rude and hateful and badmouth the fWorkers there will never be thankful that you were there to help them even help you turn the patient left the patients or even bring the patient of water they’re not even thankful for that I think this is not the place to work at all there is no kind of teamwork and your supervisor does not back you up and does not help you out in anything and it’s hard for us to get a hold of the supervisor on the phone thing by calling or texting does not returned a call to the next day which is the following day if he returns the car

A typical day at work for me is to open the clinic, print schedules off and get them to the proper departments,  answer sick call requests which are when the offenders write in what is wrong in which I would schdule them to be seen by certain departments, insulin clinic, then vitals, height and wt. on all appts, proccess dotor's orders, start IV's if needed, give mediation and injections when and if needed, assess walk ins, gurney runs,  I really like my management because I know that she cares about her staff.  The hardest part of my job is dealing with providers that bicker back and forth with one another and their team leader dose not really know how the system is suppose to be ran and therefore there is no leadership to depend on in a crisis.  The most enjoyable part of my job is that I have been there so long that I know all my co-worker's so well and we try to have fun, even on our toughest days

I wished I still worked here, but had to leave due to family relocation.  It was my privilege to work with excellent managers and charge nurses who listened to staff to make work situations better and promote work-life balance.  Also, when I mentioned to my nurse manager that I wanted to do some committee work to advance on the clinical ladder, she saw to it that I was assigned to two committees.  It was rewarding to be part of a committee that made significant changes to improve patient safety, and see our ideas become reality in each department.  It was my goal to advance my career at Hendrick, but I have had to pursue that wish in another part of the country.  Hendrick is a good healthcare system and a good employer.  I had a positive experience there.

A typical day at work on the SNF unit is receive assignments, get report, greet patient's and get their vitals and assessments, dispense scheduled medciations, do nursing notes on patient's, monitor patients, answer call lights and make sure all my patients are comfortable.  I was strating to learn the process of being a charge nurse, like chart reviews, making nursing assignments, and keeping up with new doctor's orders and processing them.  My co-workers were great, I really got along with them all pretty well, because we all worked as a team and helped one another when needed.  The hardest part of my job was probably having to deal with some of the family members (sometimes no matter what you did, it was not enough)  The most enjoyable part of my job was that I felt good that I was able to help another person.
