I am not one to "duck and run" from a job but after 40 years in the field this place did it to me. I have never had such a horrible experience. Absolutely no one was supportive...until the very very end when a couple of managers stepped in and tried to salvage me but by then it was way too late. Many of the staff were back stabbers - deliberately giving you wrong information so you would make mistakes. My manager? There are no words to describe how mean, ruthless, sneaky, and vindictive she was throwing me under the bus any chance she had. I am grateful a couple other managers were able to see through what she was doing but the damage done was irreparable! I spent 2 1/2 months experiencing anxiety attacks and sleepless nights along with wishing a semi would hit me on the way to work so I would not have to go. Interestingly enough, a friend also started there a month before I did and experienced the same thing.....in a completely different department. Another friend of mine told me to "Get out" when I told her where I was and who my manager was. In short.....toxic culture! Stay clear! 
My job now....I love it!!! Warm, caring, and supportive environment! No back stabbers here!

Oh my! My position at The Highlands was exactly what I wanted to do in retirement! The staff was warm and welcoming. My supervisors were open and accommodating (flexibility and personal considerations were honored). I loved the residents! The work was familiar and I easily adapted, given years in my career having clerical, reception and confidentiality positions. The position was never like ‘going to work’ - I enjoyed it so much! I looked forward to every opportunity I had to help and communicate with the residents. In fact after being gone for almost 2 years now (since moving to Florida) I continue to follow up with staff since I miss it so!
The overall atmosphere was so easy to be in since all of our goals were the same..that being giving our best to our residents and bringing whatever amount of joy we could to their days. I worked in both independent (primary) and assited living (secondary) and enjoyed bith equally!


At the Highland at Pittsford I am the Inside Security Officer on weekend overnights. My duties consist of Overnight Security. I am equipped with cell phone, pager & radio. These tools are used to communicate with residents pendent alerts, Outside Security & CNA/Nursing on duty Staff. 
Main function is: Immediate responds to residents pendant alerts. These alerts could be life or death situations so prompt action is needed. Also pendants need to be reset after each alert so the system is cleared and ready for use.Security also has key fobs that interact with all residents apt door locks as well as entrance way/exits to the facility so access is available to assess all situations.Rounds are made periodically along with door checks, door lock ups/unlocks

The Highlands is a great place to work. Everyone works as a team. In my position, every day is different. It's challenging, rewarding and i love coming to work everyday. The most enjoyable part of my job is working with different people/departments. I learn something new just about everyday. The hardest part of my job is leaving at the end of the day. I could work at my position 24/7. The Highlands Living Center is small, so all staff pretty much know each other. Very friendly, and a lot of fun activities for staff to do. I love being involved in any activity whether it's something for the residents or just for staff.

Management does NOT care about you.  The residents are being taken for a financial ride.  Turnover is high.  Middle managers are duplicitous, unethical and spineless.  HR is ruthless and despicable. The pay is an insult.  The workload is unreasonable.  Good employees are driven out.  Innovation and efficiency is not valued.  Employees might as well scream their suggestions into a garbage can--no one is listening.  Drama galore. Worst job I ever had.  The place is Thunderdome.  Collect bottles and cans if you have to but stay away from this place.  Just no. No. No.

Highlands Living Center has some amazing residents and wonderful families. With any job, there are positive and negative aspects. Management/leadership is poor, and the favoritism and inconsistency in how issues are managed has bred a hostile/toxic work environment. This has unfortunately resulted in high turn over of staff, which will ultimately impact residents' care. It does not seem to uphold the reputation that a URMC facility/mission should reflect. 

The residents here are the best, but the working conditions is miserable. Employees get jobs that are half explained and then get yelled at for not doing them right after the fact. Very toxic environment. Favoritism plays a big part in success. Bosses pretend to care about your concerns but they dont, and lie and manipulate to get the outcomes they want. There is no room for growth and this is no place for ambitious people who respect themselves. Would not recommend.

I LOVE working for the Highlands at Pittsford!  Everyday I look forward to coming into work. I work with so many wonderful people every day. From residents, their families and my co-workers.

Our culture here is very warm and friendly. All of us work very hard to take care of our residents no matter job your have. The management takes great care in making sure we are recognized for a job well done! Very fun environment!

Residents  is what keeps me coming back to work every day. Management is nasty and rude and think that they could talk to staff anyway that they want. There’s no room for advancement also the day rate is horrible and very low. I am currently seeking a job that will care about me and what happens at home and everything else. There’s always drama and you’re always be called to the office for something so nonchalant

I been working at the Highlands for about five years now. The manager we had before the new one we got was more understanding then the one we have now. It seem like the new manager is not understanding. She need to work on her people skills. It’s either her way or the highway.  She talk to her staff like we are kids. I wouldn’t Recommend any of my family or friends to work at this place.
