Typical Day at Work: My day will start with opening various programs, Outlook, Kronos, Visual Vault (GRM) and Zendesk (ticket system). Once I gathered all my tickets, I will perform what was requested from our employees. Employment Verification Letters (VOE), Copy of Personnel File, Filing all documents from new hires (Visual Vault GRM) send packages, letters or items via FedEx, USPS or Certify Mail, Order the office supplies (for all HR) the "breakroom" utensils, coffee, cups, plates, etc. Making sure all printers (Konica Minoltas) where functioning to their capacity. I would place tickets to the Engineers and Maintenance department for any broken: faucets, light bulbs, etc. Will call IT for anyone having a computer issues.

What I believe I learned: Prioritize, Organized, new programs: Kronos, GRM, Outlook, Adobe Acrobat PDF. 

Management: How to manage (dependable) for last minutes request, tasks,  

Workplace culture: I believe there is work culture in every department base on characters, experience and education. HR have their own culture the goal to be productive and efficient. 

The hardest part of the job: Learning something new and getting it right sooner that later. 

The most enjoyable part of the job: All my 9yrs 3month, my coworkers and helping employees along the way.

Summary: 

I started at Hoag in 2014 as a contractor for the Benefit Department  for the Open Enrollment season, translating into Spanish to employees and helping them navigate online in their accounts. 

In 2015 I was called by HR many times over and over to perform different confidential and short term assignments. 

In 2016 I was called to do the filling (paper filling), and other clerical task. 

In 2017-2018, the HR filling system went digital. As a contractor, I was the one in charge of going through 5, 500 paper files/records auditing and organizing all documents by the GRM company format, to do numerous mass uploads. 

I was hired as a Hoag employee in April 16 2018.

Summarizing my live at Hoag; I did enjoyed everyday. 

My experience was very challenging due to leadership style and workplace culture.

Management often appeared more focused on productivity metrics and financial outcomes than on the well-being of employees or the quality of patient care. Staff concerns were not taken seriously, and support from leadership was limited, which created a stressful and discouraging work environment.

Compensation was also significantly lower compared to similar companies in the area, despite the high expectations and workload placed on employees. Instead of improving wages, the company often relied on small perks such as gift cards, free company swag, yearly anniversary uniforms, or occasional free food as substitutes for fair pay. There also appeared to be an excessive focus and budget for marketing and external partnerships, including sponsorships with large companies like Disney and frequent donation campaigns, while departments were often told that essential needs were ‘not in budget’ as well as, no improvement whatsoever in employee wages.

The workplace culture among some staff members also contributed to a negative environment. There was a noticeable lack of trust within the team, and unnecessary workplace drama and false accusations between employees created an uncomfortable atmosphere. Unfortunately, these issues did not seem to be effectively addressed by management.

Overall, the combination of low pay, high expectations, lack of leadership support, and unhealthy team dynamics contributed to low morale and a consistently high turnover rate within the department and company itself.

I’m very pleased and satisfied as a HOAG employee with one exception.
Non clinical nurses are not included in educational opportunities for career advancement or success. All resources, educational seminars, conferences provided by HOAG and the HOAG education department are geared solely towards enhancing clinical bedside nursing only. There is nothing for offered nor dedicated for RNs who are not at the bedside and there are no plans in site to implement opportunities to include or enhance the knowledge for this population of nurses unless you seek something outside of HOAG and pay out of pocket. If you’re not a bedside nurse, you can not participate or register for Hoag’s nurse leadership opportunities. It’s like non-clinical nurses don’t exist or are not important enough to invest in their knowledge or advancement within the HOAG health system. There are no certification programs offered for non-clinical RN offered by HOAG, but there are frequent certification opportunities offering CEU’s as well for bedside nurses. Again, non-clinical RNs are responsible for getting certified outside of the organization, if their interested in doing so. I would think HOAG would offer certifications in any nursing field they have, as it supports Magnet status. That’s the only con I have which is pretty significant and warrants attention and improvements.

I worked in the emergency room at both Irvine and Newport Beach locations, and while they were different from each other, I was able to learn a lot about health care service.

I started out in Irvine with no experience, and since the job entails a lot of repetitive actions, you get the hang of it pretty quickly if you do the work. Towards the end of my time, I began picking up shifts at Newport to challenge myself. 

While my direct leaders were fantastic, there is a lot of politics involved, since it is a pretty big company. 

The hardest part of the job is when patients react to things out of our control. We are the front dest, the first in line, you could say, and the easiest people to be angry at. However, I feel like a sense of humor really helps you get through the day. 

You can't take things personally. None of it is personal. People are sick, and they're in pain - they're going to act like it. Patients are usually apologetic after they've received their treatments and feel better. 

The most enjoyable part of the job is  the people I worked with. My coworkers were the best. We worked hard together, and they were always so helpful - both administrative and clinical staff. You do have to go out and make friends with them to build that rapport, but once you do, you're family.

What is the best part of working at the company?
HR has come a long way over the last decade, and generally the front line managers are qualified, appreciative, effective and supportive of staff. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The organization has very high standards. I am not complaining about that, but some may find requirements challenging.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Supportive environment, but some archaic labor rules continue to be enforced (there is virtually no one working from home now, or during the entire pandemic, for example). Feels at times very much as if the organization leadership does not have trust and confidence in the people doing the work, so it can be demotivating at times. I feel like they’re trying, but the Board is comprised of business people who are not in the 21st century quite yet. They need to keep moving toward it though because they’re missing out on a lot of talent.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Work about 9 hours most days, pretty focused on work and deadlines most of this time. Colleagues are pleasant, boss lets me do my work and manage my own schedule. Allowed some creativity which I appreciate. Good collaboration between departments.

Management in the OR is bad. Lots of backstabbing people who find great enjoyment in approaching employees in intimidating manners.  I come from a reputable hospital that I enjoyed working for 15 years hoping to find a similar environment but not at Hoag in Newport. For experienced RN’s I do not suggest working there, keep on looking. Steer clear of the OR. They do not share the workload fairly and nurses rarely can get a Friday off. The hours are Monday-Fridays with call on your days off. Your personal time is in the hands of a scheduler who does not schedule fairly. And you can be put on call on your days off even AFTER the schedule is already posted promotes poor culture. If you clock out one minute late, you have to write it in a book why you were one minute over 8 hours.  Almost all nurses are 8 hour shifts and they start lunch breaks early right after having your first 10minute break.  Not many nurses are happy in the OR. I left after 10months and the only reason why it took that long is because of the slowing of jobs during covid. It feels like jail working there. There are some good things to the hospital, just not in the OR. 

The pay is quite disappointing. Entered my department as one of the only MA's licensed in phlebotomy, a practice used constantly in the department and was denied a pay bump. Such a large company with millions in donations per year should be willing to pay their experienced employee's more than entry level. Job satisfaction all depends on the department you're in and what kind of experiences you have there. Work stops as soon as you clock out, so work life balance is ok unless you're in management or a provider of course. Some management don't support schooling and make it difficult to balance school/work, even though Hoag states they support those pursuing higher medical educations. My manager was extremely caring and supported anyone in school for further medical or if they had to leave early for any reason. Time card policy is WAY too strict. Being a hardworking employee shouldn't be disregarded just because you're 5-10 minutes late once in a while. Life happens. Even being 1 minute late clocking in or out will start showing on your record and end in a write up eventually. Did not personally happen to me, but to a coworker unfortunately. Overall, it's not a bad place of work, but there are many areas that could be improved.

I worked in the IT department as an analyst for their Epic migration.  A few months after I started, a manager with no Epic experience was hired and placed in charge of my group.  That person just plain didn't know what they didn't know and explaining things to them was most times a challenge.  I resorted to doing power point presentations to outline what I was working on, why it was important and what I needed from them to help me succeed.  My experience with that manager always seemed to wind up with confrontation and they're expression of the view that I should do what I'm told and not make waves despite my vast experience in healthcare IT and implementation.  Their direct report seemed oblivious to that manager's  ineptitude and did nothing to make thing better.  I felt as though it went all the way up to the VP level who encouraged this bad behaviour and authoritarian way of managing their people.  It could have been different but management and leadership were too engrossed with their own ego's and agenda's to do the right.   Other's in similar roles from my department have left with similar views to mine.  Hoag IT, for me, was a TOXIC workplace environment - and unnecessarily so.  Be careful.  

Working at Hoag started out as a really positive experience. I was proud to be part of an organization that puts patient care first, and I truly enjoyed the work I did and the people I worked with day to day. I learned a lot, and I gave it my all because I believed in the mission. But over time, it has become clear that fairness, transparency, and support are not always consistent especially when it came to internal investigations and how certain situations were handled. It is disheartening to feel like my voice does not matter after everything I have contributed. I still value the experience, but I hope leadership takes a closer look at how employees in non-clinical departments are treated when they raise concerns or go through difficult situations.


My typical day at work would either be on the floors or in the ED sitting in a chair to watch over my patient that I'm assigned to for the day.  The patients I watch are mainly Psychiatric, Suicidal, ETOH's and Gravely disabled. I make sure they don't hurt themselves or others, or fall. I also help them with their everyday routines if well enough. 
  As a sitter, I have leaned how patients react to drugs, alcohol and whatever ailments they may have.  Working in a hospital has taught me a lot about patience and how to react to certain situations in order to make the patient feel more at ease and calm about what they are going through.  The best part about my job is taking care of them at their worst and seeing them a couple weeks or months fully rehabilitated and well.  The hardest part of the job would honestly have to be being hit or called names.  That all comes with the job and its how you react to that situation is what makes all the difference.  Management is great, I got along with everyone and they were very professional when it came to their employees and the patients.
