Rude management, no proper AC for neither the employees or the animals outside of the barn-looking shed where the boss or the long term employees get to sit down. Disorganized. as it is truly set up like a giant unkept backyard. You will spend most of your time in the heat, cleaning up messes, and will hardly be spoken to. The board that clarifies which dogs are sick and which ones are not doesn’t seem to be updated nearly as often as it ought to be- my first day I was pointed to it and told never to touch it, but that this, this, and this was incorrect. (What is the point of the board if it’s not updated properly?) They are heavily understaffed and communication is lacking, leaving an immense amount of room for contagious diseases to spread amongst the dogs they’re rescuing. Most of these dogs (keep in mind many of these poor babies are very sick) are left out in the blazing Aiken heat all day long until sundown under black tarps and medium sized kennels, while a few lucky ones are placed in the shade (mind you, still outside and completely exposed to the weather) and rotated out to potty occasionally. Not at all what I was thinking when I heard the term “rescue”

Working at Home for Good Dog Rescue’s Aiken location is great. I loved the job entirely except for some of the employees and management. The atmosphere was almost like your typical movie cheerleading squad. (Keep note that there were some genuine, and nice people there.) Everyone is nice to your face, but when you walk away they talk any trash they can think of about you. An employee one day had said something close to this, “It’s not gossip if everyone knows and agrees. Gossip are things believed by 3 people or less. If everyone knows it, it’s the truth.” Favoritism is horrible there as well, but I can’t explain that without names being mentioned. Basically, if you don’t fit in, don’t mess up.

I’ve worked here for over 2 years and I wouldn’t want to work anywhere else! The team is very welcoming and happy to help every step of the way. This job has offered me numerous benefits, including a positive work/life balance, close teamwork among management, and overall numerous opportunities to grow. Being a part of this organization has positively impacted my life in more ways than one. I would recommend this company to anyone looking for a close knit staff that loves to take care of animals, as well as each other. 

If you are looking to work in a rewarding, exciting, and fast-paced environment, Home for Good Dog Rescue is just the place for you. Since 2010, we have rescued nearly 10,000 dogs from death row. That in itself says just about all you would need to know when applying for a position here. The management always does their best to put the needs of their employees first. The workplace culture is very collaborative and comfortable considering everyone is doing what they love!

Helping the fosters with their dogs and fostering dogs myself

There was little to no support and management expected a perfect performance right from the get go

Toxic. Lots of tattletale ing, bullying and badgering 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
It’s a paperwork heavy job, so most of the day was spent on the computer

High staff turnover here says a lot, many employees don’t last a year. Feedback meant to improve the organization is met with defensiveness rather than accountability, and there’s a clear pattern of poor leadership and unprofessional behavior. It’s not just internal, public interactions often reflect the same issues. Instead of addressing concerns, staff are made to feel like a problem for speaking up.

There are plenty of rescues doing this work with integrity. I’d recommend supporting one of those instead.

First thing that was fishy is the fact that they ask you to come in for a “working interview.” You can work multiple hours on your first day and not be compensated for it. Management does not care if you’re a good employee, if you call out with a fever they’ll fire you even if it’s the first time you’ve called out. The owner is rude and yells at employees instead of just simply communicating. If you’re looking for job security this isn’t it. 

During my 8 months with the organization I went through 4 different managers, each time having to change the way things were done at the site. Upper management kept you under camera supervision throughout your entire day. When upper management made changes to SOP, it was done in a very stressful and condescending way due to the fact that these changes should have been made before they had thought of them. They have no loyalty to their employees.

Management is chaotic, cruel and negative.  There is no work/life balance.  Phone calls and unreasonable requests occur all weekend and after hours.  Managers understand employees are there because of the love of the dogs and take advantage of that.  Screaming and ugly scenes happen daily.

You’ll forever be seen as replaceable and they won’t care about you in any way. They’ll treat you like you’re dumb and know nothing but won’t teach you either.  You could even get put on night shift with a dangerous person and no matter how many people come forward about similar experiences they won’t care. Save yourself. It’s not worth it.
