health insurance is horrible. All you can afford is the EXTREMELY HIGH DEDUCTIBLE HSA or HMO. HOM contributes very little to the HSA yet HOM's CEO gets a salary of about 3/4 of a MILLION/yr. those of us on the front line taking care of The patients get squat and rsises are only 2% every 2 years. They'll bring in a taco truck or other treats, but always to the main office, so those in the field and the 
In- patient unit- who work 12 hr shifts taking care of patients are left out because we're taking care of patients. So basically, upper mgmt, the executive team and the office staff get all the perks, and those of us on the front line taking care of patients and their families get squat.  Then they have the audacity to ask employees to contribute to their fundraisers, what a joke. 
Vacation time is accrued in increments of hours worked, of course upper mgmt and executives accrue at a much higher percentage than those actually doing all the patient care.  So if you have less than 5 years in, and you get called off work due to low patient census, you can use your CTO to cover that shift(S) or choose to have 1 or more unpaid shifts that week. Of course if you work a 12 hour shift, this will eat up your accrued CTO hours, so that's a constant battle and source of stress. The people who run HOM is all about $$$ not patients. These people need to do some research on how to take care of their employees on the front line.

This system won't let me rate Culture/Values higher than a three star..The salary could be better but we all say that. They have a wonderful 403b Matching program.

I worked for Hospice of Michigan for over 13 yrs. I think that says alot about how I feel about it. There is no typical day for a hospice employee except to say that we are are on holy and sacred ground. Our patients and families invite us to share in an intimate time in their lives and that doesn't go unnoticed or unappreciated.

It's an intense time for our families usually they have just rec'd the news of a terminal diagnoses and then they are adjusting to the concept of hospice as well and meeting a handful of new people. It 's a lot to deal with all at once. We see the best in families and the worst in families.

I have had the priviledge of working with two great teams. Sure there are exceptions to the rule, but otherwise, these individuals give their all to make sure that pain is controlled, needs are met, and will see to it that it happens.

The hardest part of the job is not to live it 24/7...not to take it home with you..because you do that anyway. The most enjoyable part of the job...the people you met...the stories they tell...awe-inspiring

Management...I was lucky..my immediate supervisor in grief support and the one I worked with most recently were very supportive of the work I was doing and believed in putting patient and family first, but not everyone does this.

Overall experience was a 7/10. The schedule was flexible in the beginning. You can make your own schedule. With new management, came a lot of micromanagement; poor communication; no accountability for their decisions , changing of assignments w/o adequate transition time or plan. Upper management is disrespectful regarding your role at times. Does not understand your scope of practice as a professional. Opinions are not welcome. Unrealistic expectations. Does not respect boundaries. No annual salary increase. 

The chain of command fell a part due to micromanagement and inexperience leadership skills. People who have been there for years were leaving. 

You will have to work on call during weekdays (even nights which does not make sense when your schedule is 8-5pm) and/or weekends. You will not get “paid” for it due to being an exempt Employee. 

Pros: Coworkers are very helpful and supportive when they can. You met a lot of interesting personalities ( good laughs). 

Recommend? To just help families going through a difficult time while working with a few good coworkers-yes. But for the cons- no. 

Hopefully, it gets better internally. Overall, the field teams do great work with clients.


A typical day for me at Hospice of Michigan was to first off assure that any problems or issues that arose in patient care in regards to pharmacy or pharmacy billing issues were resolved.  My position there was to help in any way that I could and many days I would be part of planning groups to find ways to improve efficiency in the way care was delivered. Management at Hospice of Michigan was very opened door and upper management were always open to ideas or suggestions on ways to make the organization better.  My co-workers there were caring, helpful and all had the interest of the patients and the organization in mind at all times. The hardest part of my position was, early on, the retrieval of data on some of the budgetary items I was in charge of but with advancements made by vendors and with the electronic medical record this issue was resolved prior to my departure.  The most enjoyable part of my job was working in an environment that was based on respect and collaboration between co-workers and the working with the field staff to obtain operational goals.

Initially I was very excited to work for HOM. Their training facilities are top of the line. After returning from one city ai was shipped to another for training. This was not what I was told at hire. When returning from the other city new management was in place. New management contradicted many procedures I had learned. I was told that’s now how we do it here. Procedures changed constantly and the new manager was always skeptical of what I was telling them. It gave you the feeling that they thought you were lying. I was hired to work weekends that grew due to the new managers inability to go through paperwork in a timely manor. This meant I had to be available for at least one day without pay after my work week. Manager was constantly disregarding days off and would try and schedule meetings. I have never worked for anyone that I felt lied about me, to me and in general. That is just a summary of the experience.

I worked at hom until I went on medical leave. My typical day at a hospice assistant would be checking emails,  driving to patient homes, providing care like showering, dressing and ambulating. I would have on average 6 patients to see a day. Staff meetings were 1x a month. My team mates were great. We would try to help cover eachothers patients if one of us hand to go home early. Nurses needed alittle more training with explaining what the c.n.a role was to the patients family. But the nurses were great with communicating with us Cena's throughout the day. I'd document my visits and mileage after every visit. Company provides you with tablets and phone.You are expected to prove when your at the patients home. Over all it was a good experience. Not much room for advancement. But great if you plan on staying in your field. 

When I started working at hospice this was only one in my area, but these days there are a dozen. It may be hard for applicants to know there is a difference. I have a full-time job with great benefits and dedicated colleagues. We are committed to working for the patients and their families and our community supports our mission. As one of the few community-based, not-for-profits left in the state of Michigan our leadership remains dedicated to our vision and will not sell out to a hospital system or for-profit hospice chain. Our "profits" go to improving services for our patients and their caregivers. If you want to make the highest salary don't apply here. If you want to work with colleagues who have been with the same company for decades because there is no one more committed to improving end-of-life care in Michigan - come join us. We are committed to doing the right, hard work for a fair salary with a great team... and we have fun doing it. Pretty cool, huh?

The work culture at Hospice of Michigan is not supportive of anyone outside of an executive or management position. Its also very unlikey you would get one of those positions unless you are personal friends with this group. If you do get inducted into this "friend group", don't come equipped with a presumption that you will be allowed to have your own ideas. This company has a complete lack of respect for employees outside of management, the pay is very low and the benefits are very pricey. You will hear "this is a non-profit"  but the managers brag about their "on the clock" nail appointments, go on resort trips and have many, many lavish meals with cocktails on a daily basis. The employees who work hard to get those star ratings up are treated very poorly. 

I've been around long enough to know there is no perfect job or company.  It helps keep me focused on why I've chosen this career and this place.  We make a difference when people really need it.  I know that because two people in my family were served by HOM. The care team helped my family in so many ways.  It made me proud to see how gentle and respectful they were at the bedside and how calm they were with all of our family when things got scary.  Knowing how dedicated our care teams are to the patients and families - and each other - is so important.  We are a work family.

There is amazing opportunity in this organization to grow as a leader. It is very difficult work. You are serving people at the end of their life. But it is very rewarding work, if your heart is in it. The days can often be long, so time management is a very important skill to have. Boundaries are a must when working with people so vulnerable. This job will teach you to see the beauty in people and in life. You will have an amazing opportunity to grow as a professional, hone skills you never thought you would need (or know were part of your skill set), and have great opportunities to help further the development important components of this company. It’s a beautiful field with rewarding benefits. I can’t say enough positive things about it and my experience here.
