When I started ,I was told by many this was the worst office to work in and to transfer as soon as possible. Good luck getting that to happen when your immediate boss is the one the only one that can grant that transfer. If they do that then your position has to be filled. Like they really want to go through all of that. Sorry request denied only because it makes more work for your boss.

Rate of pay is ridiculously low. Even for the nurses. You are no where near compensated for giving your all day in and day out. You have to keep very good record of your mileage. It is rarely correct. Your reimbursement for that is even below average.

Way too much favoritism. Wish I could have the perks of my best friend being my boss at a job. It is so obvious too, but you can't even go up the chain of command to report anything because guess what, your boss is very good friends with her boss at corporate! So if you think anything is going to be done the joke is on you!! I'm sorry I don't see how anyone can advance in that kind of environment. All 3 managers there take their pick targeting and bullying anyone who stands up to them because they know nothing is going to happen to them because of the favoritism and fraternizing I guess you could say that goes on. 

There are 2 secretaries there. 1 of them is on her A game everyday. Exceeds what her role and responsibilities are for that job. Very taken advantage of. The other is on the internet shopping, on facebook, can't even answer the phone while the other is on a bathroom  break. When she actually does some work, it's done with many mistakes. Those mistakes are sometimes even blamed on the other that does almost everything. Management is fully aware of this and does nothing about it.

They do offer a lot of vacation time, but good luck getting to actually use it.

The drama that goes on in the office makes you never want to even go there. You're better off starting your day in the field if possible. 

This is just the tip of the iceberg. My advice, stay clear of this office.

A typical day would involve visiting 4-6 hospice patients/families, calling/texting RNs updates, calling/texting SWs updates as necessary, performing electronic medical documentation on each visit, possibly orienting college student or new employee, possibly teach one chapter of new volunteer training in evening. May work scheduled extended hours. 
    I learned more about cultural issues, how different religions/faiths/cultures view suffering, dying and death - and how to provide the best care for each patient and family. 
  Management balances upper management meetings, patient needs, scheduling nursing assistants, answering questions, being liaison with staff physician, and the ever-changing Medicare requirements pertaining to hospice services. My manager was focused, efficient, and available to team members.
  My team was focused on meeting patient needs; professional  relationship building concerned care of patients. Some office conversation when team members' paths crossed.
  The hardest part of this job was when patients/families refused to allow the interventions that would ease their suffering.
  The most enjoyable part was building relationships and trust with our patients and families.

 Typical day would be seeing your patients for the week as you scheduled them to align with your schedule.

For the most part the families were grateful for your services helping them to care for their loved ones while preparing them for their journey.

The hardest part of this job was trying to give patients their autonomy while the patient ‘s medical power of attorney had different views the patient’s goals.

The company focused more on who would be alive and give the reviews for the company than respecting patient’s autonomy. 

Often other coworkers had the belief that the patient was going to die anyway, so you were scorned for trying to treat the patient holistically.

The most enjoy art was knowing that you helped someone pass peacefully through out their journey with those families who really wanted the best for their loved ones. Being there to help lighten the burden for the loved ones left behind and to be thanked for your efforts and support is something you don’t receive often in the medical field anymore.

I believe the building of the Ames Family building, the battle to maintain the deteriorating David Simpson Hospice House on LakeErie and the challenges presented by changes in Medicare reimbursement may have been a cause for Financial/Operating issues and the subsequent layoffs.  There were two that I know of.  Employee morale seemed to plummet  for some reason, which may have been due to the end of one management style and the realization of another after the retirement of the beloved firmer CEO.  But for the most part, people who work for hospices seem to thrive by being dedicated to the needs of the patients and families served.  Most employees seem to be motivated to do their best considering that the quality of patient care is at the forefront to assure the comfort of all served clientele.

Didn't get as far as to describe a typical day at work because the orientation was HORRID! It was one big unorganized fiasco from my itinerary/schedule to the hotel accommodations I was offered while up at the corporate headquarters. The hardest part of this job is getting back my money for the hotel charge that was already supposed to have been handled by the company. It's been 3 weeks as of this writing and I STILL have not received my funds, and although I've emailed the HR director about the issue, I've yet to receive a reply back. The management, like all healthcare management as of late, is haphazard and chaotic. The left hand knows not what the right hand is doing. The lesson that continues to teach us is that corporate companies are no good at what they do. The whole orientation process needs revamping... badly. In ending my review here, the best part of the job would have been caring for those in hospice, which I still enjoy doing. 

What is the best part of working at the company?
Thorough orientation, good amount of PTO, pay was very average.  wonderful team to work with and all the docs and NP’s, Pharmacist were excellent and always available to assist.  There was not support from upper management when difficulties arose with personality conflicts.  Repeated issues went unresolved for years.

Lack of support regarding conflict and low pay

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
This was from approximately 2009 - 2017.  Things have most likely changed since then.  Culture was condescending from upper management to clinical staff.  However, outside the political aspect, my team was excellent to work with on a daily basis. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Hospice nurse.  Visits with patients and or families.  Documentation.  In services and meetings as required.

What is the best part of working at the company?
The field staff was phenomenal!!!

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The micromanaging and the pay was the worst pay of any other hospice in the area!!! We are talking a million dollar company and during the most stressful time, COVID and they still didn't raise their wages!!

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The bosses were very micromanaging but the field staff was the best I've ever worked with!!

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Hospice under a microscope, if you finished your schedule for the day you had to call and offer assistance to other teams. Which was fine but when some staff on the other team spends most of their day talking it away, while others have worked diligently I shouldn't have to take their added work.

Unfortunately, there is a sense during the interview process that you will be a part of the greater good. Yet after working there, you realize that there are mainly in groups, out groups, and then those that unfairly categorized.  As much as I love to help this population, population, this particular company does not care for their employees and does not have enough empathy for when life happens. It is very unfortunate that many people in the non profit industry world seize this company as this company has such a great place until the culture is the talk of many circles.In my own discussions of this place, I have learned that many people have heard that the culture is not good even though the business itself is.It saddens me because I feel as if I don't belong and that I need to seek another place of employment.

At my last position at this company i worked the weekend program.  I loved this, because at the time, my spouse and I were foster parents. This postion allowed me to have the flexibility to be able to help my children and their familys.  The company was good at helping us keep a balance between home and work.  The management was our partner as well as our boss, which helped keep good communication going. Weekends were very long but I came home feeling good knowing that I did what I could to help my patients and their family through a very difficult time. I felt I was well trained and given the tools and help to do the job well and safely.

I work in the field, doing home care visits to homes and nursing  facilities to care for hospice patients. This job has been integral in allowing me to meet my requirements as a mother and a professional. Work life balance is priority, mental health is important to my management.  My coworkers are passionate about what they do. I have learned so much and enjoy having autonomy is planning my work day. The tech is great, free uniforms, bags, and compensation is good too.
