My experience with Hospice began as a Temporary employee.  Things were good, I was getting raves and approval of my great work ethics and performance from management and I was getting along with everyone.  I did have a few issues, but nothing I couldn't deal with.  About a month and a half in I was offer a full time job, I accepted.  My first experience with one employee in particular was horrible and highly unprofessional.  I was embarrassed, belittled, screamed at in front of other co-workers, treated disrespectfully and my experience turned uncomfortable really quickly.  Over the course of three days, the bad behavior of this employee continued to escalate and again she embarrassed me in front of one of my HHA's.  There was no plan of action for newly hired employees to get trained and it made what should have been a pleasant experience terrible for me.  Therefore, after heavy consideration, I determined that I had made a mistake by accepting this position. 

It came to my attention that I was not the only dissatisfied employee and that the employee retention at Hospice of New York is very low.

I find that everyone at Hospice of New York is friendly and kind, which is exactly the type of person you want to find in hospice. When I first arrived, everyone made an effort to engage me, find out more about me, and make me feel welcome. While it is a growing company, it really feels like smaller company because of how familiar and friendly everyone is.

Management always makes an effort to give back to its employees whenever possible. There is always an effort to include every employee and make them feel appreciated, from our doctors to our administrative staff. 

Like with anything, working here isn't perfect. Issues arise, you get in disagreements with other co-workers. Rarely are they unsolvable or un-fixable as there is always an effort to resolve the disagreements and issues that arise. I have never been made to feel belittled, unwanted, or unappreciated.

There's lack of support from management. My biggest concern is how they handle staff conflict and conflict with contracted agencies. They often write staff up when there is any complaint made. The write up occurs regardless if you are guilty or innocent with the situation. There is no room for advancement. Many of the employees have not receive a raise in years. Management does not listen to staff suggestions but yet they expect clinical staff to take part in the marketing strategies and share it with the company. This company does not deserve my hard working clinical skills. No wonder why so many staff have left the company and work for their competitor.

Things were just fine , our Medicare audits and on site audits were always above expectations. I always believe that if you follow the rules you have little to worry about. 

When the notion of hospice grew, especially with the private sector
I found a significant change in the care  and products needed for the patients. I realized that Hospice became a lucrative business. 
The Board of Directors Changed and so the the care given. Money was the sole purpose, unfortunately.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Relatively a fair company given the health professional working environment in this time. Documentation requirements dictated by Medicare an other governing agencies increase stress of everyday performance.

Daily documentation requirements and staffing shortages

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
As good as it probably can be given stated requirements

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Long, stressful, demanding challenging

12-hour night shifts in constantly changing environment/settings. Typical work night is characterized by on-going assessment and management of patient's symptoms and significant others' reactions; liaising with on-call-RN/MD to control patients' terminal symptoms and pain, and address family member's anxiety. Most challenging part of the job is dealing with patient and/or significant others at anger stage in the grieving process. The job is more manageable when working with patients and/or family members who are in the acceptance stage of grieving.

Flexibility, working independently 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
No support.. you’re really out there on your own… 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Ungrateful… do not appreciate the nurses. 



What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Smooth because that’s how I set my visits up

The pros:
You work independently and make your own schedule 
You make an impact on your patients 
You accrue time off pretty quickly, 9.5 hours per pay period

Cons:
Low pay
Ok benefits
Time off bank is 1 bank. Sick, holiday, and vacation are one bank of days off, and if there’s a company sponsored holiday 
Management is not trustworthy, they are not supportive of field staff, their words and actions do not match, and they will make sure you feel uneasy about your job security if you aren’t in the favorites club.

I would not work here again.  

providing care to people who need assistance with daily living activities. I learned how to communicate with many families of all races. To provided comfort care in all situations no matter of age or gender. Hospice is a family based organization with an amazing management team. I've worked with the same co-workers for such a long period of time, we become like family. The worst part of the job is losing someone to death. The best part of the job is making someone's end of life happy.

I worked with this company for over 20 years and it was a rewarding experience. The only reason why I left this company is because I relocated and they don’t have an office in the state in which I am currently living. The owners and management are very nice and helpful. Working with my colleagues are like working in a family business with love respect and great communication.
