Many HSHS/HSHS IL Executive leadership are unethical, immoral and terrible examples of leadership. They pretend to follow the mission and values (respect, care, competence, and joy) of the organization but their words and action do not align. 
They eliminated approximately 150 jobs in April 2020, not because of Covid-19, but due to the typical "restructuring" that HSHS does every 5-6 years. They ONLY care about finances and personal egos over the colleagues, middle management, and even patients. This is the perfect example of an organization and culture of no respect and trust. People are just numbers used to add and subtract from a budget.
Strategic priorities change weekly and direction towards those priorities is very inconsistent. Nursing Leadership is a mess! Can't remember what direct was given week to week, changes direction all the time, unable to execute ideas. Accountability is non-existent or used inappropriately. Bullying, cliques, gossip, and toxic people, bad attitudes, fear-based management tactics are in abundance. People are promoted based on personal relationships with executives rather than competence. Most unprofessional place I've every worked. 
Quality and patient safety is not a priority unless a regulatory agency is in the building. 
Pretty consistent themes about management reading the other low star ratings...
As a Christian, I'm ashamed that these are the leaders that represent faith-based healthcare in Central IL.


I've never done housekeeping in my life and this was my first time so it is not the best job. During a day you typically do daily cleans(mop grab trash wipe down room clean bathroom dust ect.) in about 32 rooms a day (depending where they put you could be more or less). they want you to clean those rooms at least 2 times a day on top of doing discharges (about 6 rooms or more a day takes 40 mins to clean) and your cores (public bathrooms waiting room nurses stations offices staff break rooms ect) all by your self. because they are always short staffed because either the hiring process takes to long or people tend to quit after 3 months. and with no experience your start pay is going to be around 9.00-9.95 hourly which is not all that great seeing as tho your cleaning diarrhea and bodily liquids and dealing with isolation rooms (takes about a hour and 30 mins to clean) with peoples dead skin every where. that's why I am saying you need to be prepared for anything and to see anything (mens woohoos all the time). You do tend to have a set schedule. pay is every 2 weeks if your full time. you do get medical benefits pto and what not. This job does take a lot of physical strength your walking all day and your pushing a cart around the hospital. you pick up heavy bags may be hard on your back not for the weak.

A typical day at work, unless you're applying for a medical position, you will never ever receive the same treatment. The management is terrible, the turnover rate is that of a pancake on high heat and the amount of the higher paid ( over $30k ) people disrespecting you is out of this world. There is no way that I would suggest working here unless you're going into patient care. Its so disgusting the amount of times I have tried to reach my own management and they would all just say that they will take care of it and never do. There has been times were I have to do patient care staffs job because they are too lazy or "too" busy ( usually meaning sitting down and charting ) to assist with these situations. This place is only brought down even more by the fact that the wages are so different even though you all do the same job and have the same experience. You could be paid 2-3 dollars less than the new guy that just came in. Raises are only once a year and even if you approach your management about requesting a raise they'll scoff in your face and tell you its once a year only ( in November ). There is very little room to grow and you basically have to be plucked from another department to advance anywhere in the hospital. There are some good incentives like cheap insurance, free food some days, and if you're religious you get to participate in event even if you're on the clock.

The unit, shift, and people you’re scheduled with strongly dictates how your shift will go. Some units struggle due to lack of enforcement of job duties and expectations by the floor manager and/or charge nurse for the unit and shift, as you will see reflected by what unit has the most job openings posted. You will work with people who believe one of their top priorities is keeping a chair warm, so prepare to be very forward when communicating with your colleagues that you need assistance with something.  

Expectations from management change rapidly and are enforced inconsistently between different staff of the same license/certification but our raises are locked across the entire company as displayed on our company-wide emails. 

Department managers are predominantly concerned about “productivity” and ensuring you punch out for your 30 minute lunch and punch out on time due to “how much it’s costing HSHS to pay you extra hours/overtime.” They address this but can’t give us an answer on how to meet their expectation while prioritizing patient care, and running short on staff almost daily. 

I worked at Hospital Sisters Health System (HSHS) for three years, and overall, it was a positive experience. From the start, I felt supported by my team, and the hospital environment was generally welcoming. The sense of camaraderie among the staff helped during the more demanding shifts, and I appreciated the professionalism and respect shown by my colleagues.

One of the highlights of working at HSHS was the focus on patient-centered care. It was clear that the hospital prioritized not just the physical health of patients, but also their emotional well-being. I saw firsthand how small gestures—like taking the time to listen or offering reassurance—made a difference for patients and their families. This approach to care aligned with my values as a nurse.

While not without its challenges, the hospital's leadership did make efforts to keep communication open with staff, and they were generally receptive to feedback. It felt like our voices were heard, which is not something to take for granted in a busy healthcare setting.

Overall, my time at HSHS was fulfilling, and I’d recommend it to nurses looking for a supportive workplace where patient care is truly valued.

A typical day at HSHS is dealing with customers, food service and management. Some days go smoothly and others not so much. the staff is run on the bare minimum. 
What i learned was how a hospital food service is run. how long to get the trays out to patients and how they are prepared. How the run the cash office and how the do catering.
The culture there is okay, and you care work with almost anyone there. There is a lot of work place gossip though.
The hardest part of the job is the lack of training the provide and saying that it is easy.
 The most enjoyable part of the job is when you light up a patients day by bringing them a meal and offering some kind words to them. 
 But the biggest issue is management, the seem to not listen to their employees, and run a bare minimum of staff and have the night crew understaffed and have others work long hours instead of trying to fix the issue. Managment is not their on the weekends,or nights.

Job security is very unstable for entire division; recently let go/terminated approximately 25 colleagues, many long term. Administration touts "just culture" but fires people on a whim, especially over the past two years. Many repetitive safety issues that are not dealt with appropriately and occur on the same units time and time again. Definitely not the organization it was 20 years ago when the Sisters ran it--significant changes in leadership both at system level and locally have ruined what use to be a respected organization with their own identity. No consideration given for new ideas (their way or the highway mentality). If looking for a job in the medical field would strongly recommend looking into one of the other two hospitals that are currently in the area or wait until the other new hospital is built in town.

Having worked at St Johns for 4 years it was a good place to work. The staff are friendly but seem tired and overworked and thats because they are. It is hard to maintain a decent par level of personnel for each department and in turn it puts strain on everyone and it also reaches patient care.

Regular staff isnt listened to much and work life balance isnt taken into consideration. The upper management doesnt take call or doesnt work weekends but finds it ok if staff in working all weekend and all night with scheduled elective cases. 

No one is accountable for their actions and it is frustrating to have management change continuously. I went to St Johns because the people in my department were there for over 25 years each and now there isnt a single person left because of turnover and a huge change in management.

I worked 6p-6a at St. Mary's Hospital for about one year. My co-workers were amazing and I enjoyed going to work. However, working nights just wasn't for me, as it was very difficult for my family life. There wasn't a set schedule every month, so it was difficult to plan life events in the future. The hardest part of my job was working short a large majority of the time, being the only nurse on the unit with a heavy patient load. Although it was tough, I still managed to ensure that my patients were safe and received excellent care. The most enjoyable part of my job was the direct patient care. I went into nursing to help people and care for those who are not able to care for themselves. I was able to care for my patients and watch them progress every day, which brought me satisfaction.

Typical day at work: Med/Surg will only work you with 2 nurses, NO CNA, with 8 patients. They expect you to do all care (vitals, shower, answer call lights, assessment charting, medication administration and all of this responsibility needs to be done on time, they also expect you to document in real time. Working this way dont expect to get a break or a lunch because it does not happen. MANAGMENT IS TERRIBLE!!! Dont ever complain about working the way they do or not getting any breaks/lunches because the manager will find a way to get rid of you. All the nurses I worked with wanted what was best for the patients and do the best they can do. The hardest part of the job is the unrealistic expectations. The most enjoyable part of the job, the friendship you will make with the other nurses.
