Hospital for Behavioral Medicine

The only thing good about this facility was the patients. Of course, there were some caring staff but the philosophy for the activities department was: do groups until you drop dead and receive no feedback whatsoever. I worked here for a year and a half and was never invited to a single collaborative meeting nor asked for my input on anything. I know that plenty of patients left positive reviews about my groups yet never heard a word. Management and leadership were either mean-spirited or non-existent. I spent $1,200 on a professional development conference and was told they wouldn't reimburse a cent - plus, I used vacation time!

It was nearly impossible to lead quality groups on the units due to constant interruptions and distractions.  It was like trying to lead therapy groups in the middle of Times Square. There was no supervision for therapists. I really wanted to learn and grow but learned nothing. Management cared only about group numbers and worked us like an engine without oil. Corporate and my supervisor didn't have the slightest understanding of or appreciation for expressive arts therapy. I had a pit in my stomach working there during my last two months. The activities department went from five staff to one in a month and a half.  Towards the end, the activities department was told we needed to completely rearrange our schedule and starting leading six groups per day - plus documentation, alternative programming for patients who didn't attend, and group planning! The last straw was when I was told by corporate that I wasn't allowed to lead any music or art-focused groups and should do something "therapeutic." Good riddance!


Keep a good attitude. Do your work. Set boundaries. There are always a lot of changes with staff happening. The place makes it by the skin of its teeth. They’ll try to put that on you. I’ve thought about sending them an invoice for all the tumblers they’ve thrown away on me. Ones that were in the right places, just happened to be in front of the plant manager on a conniving day. That’s how this place runs, passive aggressive idiocy. The units are poorly staff but don’t get wrapped up in policy. Often doing the work of two on a unit is normal. On top of that getting a call to help out on another unit wouldn’t surprise me. Patients notice your hard work, managers here, NEVER. Managers will never help. Can’t leave on Friday until all normal duties are done plus everything for all new admissions because over the weekend the time window expires and you’re out of compliance.

 Redeeming qualities are the diamonds in the rough of course. There is always at least one great coworker everywhere you go. HBM has a solid crew of great RNs, MHTs. 

Ultimately when it comes down to it, HBM is a for profit enterprise. While I worked there to help people, they were there to maximize profits. You will work for your money, no doubt about that.


Working as a Yoga Therapist at the Hospital for Behavioral Medicine has been an amazing experience. The team is collaborative, supportive, and truly dedicated to patient care. I’ve had the opportunity to design and implement evidence-based yoga programs tailored to clients dealing with anxiety, chronic pain, and behavioral health challenges. The environment encourages creativity and growth, and I feel valued as a professional.  

The interdisciplinary approach here allows for real teamwork — I’ve worked closely with doctors, therapists, and other healthcare providers to create holistic treatment plans. The commitment to patient safety and well-being is always the top priority.  

Management is receptive to new ideas and genuinely cares about both staff and patients. The work can be challenging, but it’s also incredibly rewarding. Seeing clients make progress and knowing I’m contributing to their healing journey makes every day worthwhile.  

If you’re looking for a place where your work makes a tangible difference, and you want to grow as a wellness professional, I highly recommend the Hospital for Behavioral Medicine.  



A typical day at HBM included anxiety and stress. Group leaders are expected to run 5-6 groups a day in 8 hours, document them, plan them, and complete other duties with no time, supplies or support. Group leaders were often put down and degraded, micromanaged and told that their groups that they have worked hard to support the clients were not therapeutic.  Company hired for a specific schedule and changed the schedule on multiple occasions without collaboration or support. Demands were placed on employees without communication and you were supposed to know what to do without communicating with anyone. There is a general lack of respect, teamwork and collaboration and it appears that everything comes before client care. 

What is the best part of working at the company?
The best part were working with my colleagues.  It was management/corporate that made the place miserable.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Lack of thorough training.  Everything was pieced together. You never learned why things were done, just given enough information to do the work.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Toxic!! Very low morale. Departments do not work together like they should, they do not work as a team.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Long and miserable.  A lot of extra work is dumped on you with no time to do your own job. No sense of accomplishment at the end of the day.

I worked at the hospital from the very beginning, before it opened it's doors. At first they acted liked they cared about the patients, about their care, dignity, and overall mental health improvement while in the hospital -- after all I mean that is pretty much the whole objective of a psychiatric hospital. The upper management team could have cared less about the well being of the patients as long as it did not make them look bad. So, if you don't care about people and don't mind corralling them like animals then this is a good place to work. But if you got into the social service feild to actually try to make a difference in people's lives you will be fighting every step of the way at this place.

There are always politics in any company, but because this is a start up hospital, the group of people brought together to get the hospital off the ground are dedicated to each other and to making the hospital a success.  Right now, the most difficult part of my job is because we don't have a full house yet, we are short staffed, but the more beds we become certified for, the more people will be hired.  It's tiring at times, and of course, there are people who sometimes make the job harder than it has to be, but for the most part, it is a great place to work.  And for most of these people, the job is not just a paycheck, they believe in what they are doing.  As do I.  We help people.  Simple as that.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Communication and safety also lack of respect RN vs LPN between administration and active floor staff.  Also earned time management and requesting time off through 2 apps.

A few floor staff are remarkable. RN AND LPN not respected. Environment is not safe.




What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Constant time crunches. Hungry, constant interruptions during med passes by other nurses!  staff and Director of in house pharmacy AMAZING !!

What is the best part of working at the company?
Nothing, this place is the most toxic place on the planet. The only thing missing is chemical suits and biohazard signs

Ineffective leadership, employees turn over rate and corporate leadership that has no clue on the region and verbal abuse 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
It’s the seventh ring of he’ll, that’s worst that a prison with walls. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Meeting about the state shutting the place down, and meetings about avoiding it.

Toxic. That is the only word that truly encompasses my experience with this company m. Unit staff were wonderful, they made the day to day of the job good but higher ups are not people I feel should be in the positions they hold. They are condescending, rude, and make you feel as though you are never good enough even though they know they need you. They treat you as though you are replaceable instead of a valued employee. Rules are always changing and job responsibilities are always changing, with no consideration of staff and turn out is high in all departments for a reason.
