A typical day at work? Arrive, on time if not a bit earlier, according to your assigned schedule :) Early bird gets the worm not to mention that early beats late any day of the week especially when your job is riding on it. :) Trust me on this one. DO NOT BE LATE for anything! Whatever you do, do not forget your security badge! Keep it secured in your vehicle or a place you will not forget to search at before you head out to work. If you do forget, don't panic...too much. ::) You must report that you do not have it on you to the assigned Humana representative and they will assign you a temporary one. Just don;t make it a habit. You have to scan your security badge before you enter the main lobby and again before reaching the main call center floor.Do not be the good Samaritan that opens the door for someone without a badge or without them scanning it if they do have it on them or you and your new friend will get into some hot water for a security violation. This next step is where coming in early helps.  Log in/set up your PC with the appropriate source documents/e-mail. Review any/all alert information/e-mails on Humana products/member information updates. As with most inbound call centers, you will talk to people from all walks of life/demeanor to include from several states including Virginia, Illinois, and our sunshine state, Florida. You will also be dealing with medical providers within Humana's network. You will have two small 15 minute breaks, nice/comfortable break rooms, one 1/2 hour lunch break. You will have to balance the old "nature call" or break room phone chat become time does not stand still in an inbound call center.Had to do that a couple of times and mother nature won each and every time. :) Bathrooms do close for cleaning and unless you have a special relationship with the cleaning crew don't count on slipping in.  Calls are constantly coming in with only a few minutes of reprieve before the next caller hits. You have to be a multitasker  times 2. You must learn to speak/listen to a  member and at the same time quickly jot down notes in your PC system on who the caller was, what they wanted, what they expected out of the call and what you dd to facilitate that mbr's request. HIPPA POLICY(privacy/release of personal information etc..). You must learn it, live it and abide by it during every call that comes in. Every call is different and you will be provided guidance on how to handle each type of caller whether it be a member or provider. Night time I hear is a bit more quite. Each employee will have the opportunity toward the end of training to select a schedule they wish to have. Keep in mind while your request will be considered it will be assigned according to the needs of the call center. You will be tested after every subject is covered for the most part and pass with a 85% or better on certain exams. You will be informed of which ones they are at eh start of the class. 

What I learned/enhanced? Be mindful of your time on breaks/lunch. Again, time goes quickly in a inbound call center. To talk and type at the same time. And most importantly, LISTEN to what the member/provider is asking for. While it may come to a surprise to some, not everyone is a skilled multitask er. Its an acquired skill developed after much frustration/practice and very much expected if you intend to be successful at this job. Be a team player and not to take anything personally. People will have bad days. That said, however, technology at the most inopportune times was a root cause in mbrs/providers getting impatient with us. Flawless internet and technology we know will never be perfect no matter who you work for and should be anticipated with contingencies on work around/alternate solutions/sites to provide the member with a efficient/happy experience with Humana. Know this, you will get Irate callers no matter how good a service you strive to provide. Some people will yell at you and ask why "you", and they really mean Humana, have denied their claim, changed their primary care provider to one they never asked for etc.. Best thing to do, and some may find this very difficult to do, is to provide a heart felt apology. Nothing soothes a savage beast more, in this case a irate caller, than a you accepting blame for their life's ills even though they may already know it was not you directly who caused their problem. If you are "thin skinned"/offended easily and feel you have the right to defend yourself against every perceived offense/attack then this job is not for you. Please do not waste your/companies time by applying because your time at Humana will be cut short. All calls, as some of you with call center experience know, are screened by a Quality Assurance department out of state/results sent to your lead. You will be rated down for speaking unprofessionally to a member no matter how abusive they may have been. There is a set protocol in handling these type of callers so if you find yourself in this job with a caller that can make a sailor blush, keep your emotions in check/stay cooll, apologize to the mbr and handle the call according to the given instruction whether that be passing on to a supervisor or just simply offering a heart felt apology. Most callers that start loud back down fairly quickly after they hear a heartfelt apology. Most times, that's all they want to hear. :) Worked for me. 

Management: Good/seasoned people. They always treated me with professionalism even when I was in trouble. Never a raised voice or angry demeanor. However, I feel from my personal perspective that they need to work on their personal employee/management relationships. I feel they fraternized a bit too much with new employees which led to difficulty in keeping some folks in check during class.This issue gave way to perceptions of favoritism, as unfounded they may have been, from other students. As we all know, perception is 9/10ths reality...right?.Something along those lines. :) Overall,  I feel management did their best with what they had/skill set wise and support from their higher management and did a good job in keeping us informed for the most part with the occasional miscommunication.  :) The class training portion needs work in the sense that they need to insure that the information that is being put out is as accurate as possible. Very awkward moments at times when the student appeared to know more about a given subject being lectured on than the instructor. It is the insurance world after all and things change on a dime. Case in point, the Affordable Care Act of 2010. 

Co-Workers?  Don't get me started! :) lol! Seriously though, we had folks from different walks of life/soft skills ranged from high to almost non-existent. Some folks had the maturity level of grade school children but then again who am I to judge. I am a bit of a class clown myself but in my defense I knew where to draw the line. Some folks it seemed never fully left grade school and behaved accordingly. We are human after all, so one must learn to accept peoples shortcomings as we ask others do for us while we aim to adjust them and better ourselves as adults in the process. 

Hardest part of the job? Dealing with irate customers, getting ones call handling "flow" down when handling calls. It's too easy to carried away with the conversation and neglect to get good notes during the process. Notes are vital in providing good customer service should a member need to follow up on a call/request. Another bit that made life difficult at Humana was dealing with colorful personalities within the work place. Some folks would come in to work acting as if someone had died and made them CEO of the place ridiculing your every move/comment. Humana does not hold sole stock on these personality types I am sure you folks out there reading my thesis can attest to. These folks I took with a grain of salt. Ok, with a pound of salt!! And when that tactic didn't work, like the Marines, I improvised, adapted and overcame. Simply put, I just plain out ignored them :) lol! Maybe that is why my blood pressure is so high now. lol!! Again, not one to judge, just commenting on difficulties experienced. 
Lastly, technology.technical issues that were  common place during day to day operations.Again, some of you "chairborne rangers" out there know what I am talking about.  Some problems were a "no brainier to solve. Others, Bill Gates/Steven Hawking together could not figure out. These machines, I mentioned, where possessed by evil and needed an old priest and a young priest to clean them from the glitches that plagued these poor, brand X machines. "THE POWER OF CHRIST COMPELS YOU!! No offense to the hard core brothers/sisters of the faith. My sincerer apologies if I have offended anyone with my quote from the 1973 Horror flick, "THE EXORCIST."

Most enjoyable part of my job? Goodness, that would have to be the satisfaction I felt after having helped out  a provider with a claim or a member requesting a provider change because their children had been scene by their old provider, "Dr. Smith,"  since they were born and they just couldn't fathom having to see another pediatrician. 

I do apologize for the "lengthy" report but when you work, even for a short time period as I did, at a place like a call center, the experiences/lessons learned are many to say the least. Again, I sincerely apologize to any/all parties if they felt offended by my remarks/constructive criticism here and hope that at minimum they can make a more educated decision on working for Humana as a Customer Service Specialist. Best of luck to you all who decide to pursue this career with Humana. It is very fulfilling if you can find the right company to work for that will value you for what you bring to the table.

If you like boring, routine work for disproportionately good pay, consider being a Retrieval Specialist with Humana. 

To be fair, I absolutely adored my *direct* management team and my colleagues, and the pay and benefits were criminally good, considering the completely unskilled nature of the job. It's just that I can't be bored at work and still want to show up. Maybe you can. 

Working as an RRS required 50% travel throughout a specified region between the months of June and December, unless you lived directly in the city with the major Humana hub. We had perhaps 20-30 RRS reporting to one central hub, with 10 of those living right in the city with the major regional office. Those of us outside reasonable driving range of that hub were sent within a 250-mile radius on a regular basis to visit doctors' offices to--as the job title implies--retrieve certain subscribers' medical records for verification against Humana Medicare's something-or-other. To be honest, I never cared to dig too far into why we did what we did, as that understanding was honestly not a requirement to do the job. 

The remainder of the year was spent working ENTIRELY from my home office making phone calls to harass other doctors' offices who had either refused to participate in this inane verification process throughout the year, had records we could not find previously, or had patients whose records raised yet another set of flags in Humana's system. There's a point in the year when you are expected to walk into the doctors' offices unannounced to try to collect these records, but after the first time an office manager threatened to call the police on me, I refused to do it again. 

Traveling wasn't terrible, though it was hard on my family, and the opportunities I had to visit the hub to see my colleagues were always something I looked forward to. The isolation was unbearable, though. Either I was working from home and not seeing anyone, or seeing completely different people every day. I began to envy people who worked in offices and had the opportunity to befriend and go to lunch with a colleague or simply engage in water cooler talk. It was difficult to build normal workplace relationships for a few years after I left. 

By the time I resigned, I was going to go insane if I spent another second pushing pieces of paper through a scanner or holding space in my brain to learn yet another poorly designed EMR system.  I cannot imagine, many years later and with plenty of advances in technology, that this process is not completely automated by now. If it's not, get in until it is. You will seriously not find another job this easy for this much money. 

Orientation at headquarters in Louisville, KY was pretty good; people were energetic, happy, fun, gave good vibes about the company regarding wellness, diversity, team spirit, & ongoing training & other opportunities, and they say..."no one quits Humana cuz it's so great!" Well, after getting to my home office, my on the job "one-on-one" training (along with 2 others) lasted total of 7 days. Rest of training you had to do online at home, taking countless hours, numerous computer issues/crashes, calls to IT, never received all required equipment to even do the job. Was expected to have entire job memorized in 1st month, not allowed to ask questions for further clarification, otherwise you get written up for "not being focused, unorganized." The so-called trainers (front line leaders) have no experience in training...they sit there across the table IM'ing each other acting like high-schoolers, judging & bashing each new employee then tattling their assumptions & accusations to the mgr, with whom you never see, nor can prove them wrong in their blatant lies. While they are supposed to be training us, they sit there doing their own work, making phone calls on personal & business lines, personal texting, and constant interruptions that inhibit any type of learning. Being shoved in small office was also not conducive to effective learning, especially when FLLs have to go out to smoke frequently. They treated you like a child, like a nuisance, and nit-picked every thing you did, &  you're not allowed any mistakes to be made in your 1st 90 days or you're written up for any reason. Was never given name tag; our job title changed 7 times (since this was new position in area). Was supposed to visit with patients at facilities, but after 2nd week was told I had to be just a telephonic nurse. None of us ever did this UM position before in our careers, but was expected to know everything about Medicare, Humana's criteria for discharge, length of stays; your opinion & years of bedside experience & critical thinking skills couldn't prove or justify that every case is different depending on patients' medical history..Customer service & satisfaction was not the goal...it is purely to make the insurance company more money to rip off more people. Leaders are extremely disrespectful, condescending, abusive, constant criticism, unorganized, very hypocritical, judgmental/discriminatory, rude in every form of communication (in which I highly recommend saving copies of). Plus they refuse to reimburse all expenses incurred since day 1 in KY. Had to call an attorney. Worst company ever, which was so sad, having just come from the best company..just needed a different career path due to relocation.

The culture at Humana was very over bearing and hard to understand. It seem the training was fast, therefore a lot of understanding the job was hard. We spent 2 weeks in training for about a 5 year experience employee. A lot of the training was who every was available to train at the moment. A lot of the veteran employees where not helpful or they made you feel as if you are bothering them. As a new Agent in Agent support there was a lot of unexplained questions that was not given in training, therefore you picked up what you could, and took short cuts.This seem to work and helped you get through the day. You have to do lot in 7 minutes and you will be graded on calls and take points off if you make a mistake. The employee culture was un-friendly employees, unhappy employees, and a lot clicks. The front ends(supervisor) have their favorites so they cater to them. AEP-open enrollment is very fast pace and busy so the time you take breaks you have to re group and try to get back into the mental of things. The front-ends sit in their office and rarely come out, support, hate to answer questions, and you always had to send a Email even if they are in reach of your desk. I did not enjoy working in Agent Support, and felt that because I was part time. We was treated second hand, had to work late even if we was still new, and was not included in special events. I also felt that they did not appreciate me while I was there. It was nerve wrecking, stressful, and a very bad hostile place to work. I worked for Humana in 1999-2001 and at that time the representation of what the company stood for on taking care of their employees, and being fair was outstanding. Presently there is a lot of mangers posting out because they are unhappy, feel trapped in Agent support, and therefore they will not come across as having good leadership skills. I hope that this department get the restructure that is needed because the company is great to work for. my assignment was ended because I approach a Front End (supervisor) about a email that he had sent and called him out on it and how he did not even look at the issue. I was glad that they ended my assignment and relieved.After my assignment ended I went back to school to better my education so I will not have to fell like a second employee.Also working at Humana for AEP open enrollment has taught me a lot about a miserable disgruntle employee and how not to be one. So for that Humana I thank you

The computer system is antiquated and slow and at least 75% of the time interferes with one performing one's job efficiently. They stress quality, but what they fail to realize is quality takes T-I -M-E and they aren't willing to give the employee adequate time to do their jobs with each individual member.(If one of your members needs extra time and you do the "right thing" by them and spend the extra time they need, and get behind and don't reach your quota- watch out! ) The real focus of Humana is numbers/metrics based(made up by management who is clueless on what it takes to do this job correctly). on how many "successful " calls one makes (of which the metrics are totally unrealistic for the quality they say they expect). The metrics are not based on your work ethic or by how well you care for your members and teach them, but on whether the person picks up the phone and talks with you or not. So if you make 30+ calls in a day and only 5 people picked up the phone and spoke with you, you failed for the day. You could have put in 10 hours for an 8 hour day (which you are not paid for since it's salary- since you're often forced to work extra so when you figure it out you only made $10 an hour), not gotten any breaks or lunch, put up with at least 1 - 2 hours and some days 8 hours of computer issues that put one further behind, and after all that get reprimanded because you didn't meet your "quota". (They forget these people that we're calling are retired and aren't going to wait by the phone for you- they're out living and enjoying their lives).You have no one to cover for you if you're on vacation. So if you plan on taking a week off, be prepared to do a month's worth of work which is already impossible in 3 weeks. Don't plan on getting sick either. Now you don't feel well and are expected to do the same. The quality assurance dept has made up totally unrealistic care plans that force you to talk about what they feel you should discuss with the member so their numbers look good which could be 360 degrees away from what the member wants to discuss or may be concerning them at the time and then they wonder why enrollment of the members is so hard to maintain - duh!! Management is also so pressured to show their team is meeting the "numbers" so they look like a success, don't look for any support there. Don't go there! unless you love being overworked, underpaid and abused.

Humana is an amazing company with the best benefits, including 401K I have seen in a long time. Humana thrives on being a Wellness company and wants every employee to be their best mentally and physically while thriving to achieve the success each employee desires.

That philosophy DOES happen within this company, just not in the department I work in due to the manager.  I would love to continue to work for this company until retirement, again, just not for this manager. The only joy in this management team is the Front Line Lead that has a heart of gold. Unfortunately, the turn around for this regional department is quite high.

A typical day at work is working 8 hours, reviewing records, averaging 50+ a day is the company requirement. It is a quiet area.  Other departments are often heard laughing and eating together, enjoying their coworkers.  

I have learned a great deal about HCC coding, use of software such as 3M, Epic, OCW, e-star, e-tool Verisk/Mediconnect systems, through hands-on trial and error mostly.

The hardest part of this job is that there is no manual here for new hires.  The guidelines are constantly changing within the department, often without notice for some coding scenarios. There was very little training when hired, which is a negative for people coming in that have little to no experience with HCC coding versus standard medical office coding.  Again, this is not the case for entire MRA division, just this specific regional department.

The most enjoyable part of the job, for me, has been, being able to gain confidence in my ICD-9 and ICD-10 knowledge.  Watching accuracy rise month to month is a very accomplishing feeling.

In conclusion,  Humana, overall, is an amazing company to work for.  I truly love what I do and have no complaints about the "actual job" and what is required of me on a daily basis. It, unfortunately, like every organization, has some bad apples in the bunch that ruins it for potentially life-long employees. I just happen to land under a bad tree.

Don't be discouraged from working for this company...just pick a different department to appy to if you are in my geographical area.

In the ever-evolving corporate landscape, facing challenges that test our resilience and adaptability has become increasingly common. Employees were kept in the dark until the negotiation's collapse, a situation never openly addressed by senior management. This practice of obfuscation, followed by a lack of accountability, appears to be a recurring theme.

It requires explaining the intricacies of one's role to management in overly simplistic terms, managing an expanding workload against the backdrop of diminishing resources, all while navigating a culture that espouses values of transparency and unity in words but not in actions.

If the prospect of contributing to an organization that outwardly promotes teamwork and open communication yet practices the opposite intrigues you, then this might be the opportunity you've been looking for. It's a chance to navigate the complexities of corporate dynamics, where the reality often diverges from the rhetoric, challenging one to find balance and purpose amid the contradictions.

I worked for Humana processing Prior Authorizations in Tempe AZ for almost 2 years. A typical day at work was answering phones then after a while, you can work back end production queues. 

Hardest part & Management: If you do have the misfortune of getting hired there, you will be overworked (compulsory OT during 3 to 4 month the peak season, sometimes 4 hours PER DAY), underpaid ($17 per hour or less, no raise - ever), micro-managed (by uneducated, untrained managers) and if you work in the Tempe building you will be in deplorably filthy conditions (really, Humana? you are a $50+ billion company - clean the place!!).  When I was there, everyone was sick, all the time, as the building environment was "sick". One of their core values is health and wellbeing - I saw neither in practice there. 

If you are considering working there - I think you could do better, almost anywhere  Humana, I know you can do better. One of the criteria for managing people seems to be that whoever can "hang in there" the longest gets promoted. There is no attention paid to those who abuse and disrespect their people. Managers seem to do whatever they want and get away with it.  My experience was that there are a number of managers there that do nothing for their people's development. They are interested only in the status quo. They are definitely not interested in improving the lot of anybody working for them, or taking care of people that are on the front lines doing the work. 

Culture: I believe the only remotely tolerable way to work at Humana is to obtain a work-at -home position. That way you can get away from the lousy in-office culture and the terrible physical working conditions. They do have a great 401K and that's the only reason I gave them 2 stars for compensation/benefits. However - it does take 2 years for the company match to vest, and guess what - you'll probably get terminated right before you do vest in your 401K (that you couldn't really afford to contribute to from the get go!). Everything else - 1 star - hideous.  I do hope this review helps someone avoid the mess that is Humana in Tempe. Other departments or office locations may be better, and I sure hope so - but somehow I doubt it.

Company misclassified ee as exempt salaried dumps the job of 2 full time employees on people refuses to pay overtime (even if you are forced to file lawsuit) works ees to the point of chronic illness and near death, refuses to pay disability, etc. Humana management believes they are above the law and violates every federal employment law. When information is brought to their attention HR will turn blind eye and ignore complaint and blame complaining ee for everything management did. Management is beyond abusive, creates a severe hostile environment that is intolerable to work in. If you try to hold onto your job, their abuse will increase to another level. And due to all the overtime and abusive work environment it becomes a dangerous situation, so dangerous you are afraid and 2 sick to return. So abusive, even your doctor will  say no you can not return. If you complain to HR you will be ignored. Still, 5 years later, nightmares continue on. Corporate America management has become so abusive and out of control and on a power trip that people are near dead trying to survive. Then they will refuse to terminate employment or work with you to move you to a different location and trap you to the abusive role. When you have to go on disability, their torture will continue and they will deny paying disability and even deny paying your meds you need to function trying to recuperate from their damage they caused. It's just the worst experience I've ever had but this is corporate America.And they can do whatever they want and get away with it. This is a criminal employer that should be held accountable for all their criminal illegal employment practices. People need to start saying NO.  I WILL NOT WORK OVERTIME. NO I WILL NOT ALLOW YOU TO CONTINUE YOUR ABUSIVE WAYS. START SAYING NO. THEIR OVERTIME ABUSE IS SO BAD PEOPLE ARE PHYSICALLY HURT FROM HUMANAS DAMAGES. HOPEFULLY PEOPLE START STANDING UP TO THIS AND MAKE A CHANGE FOR THE FUTURE GENERATION THAT HAS TO WORK IN SUCH ABUSIVE ENVIRONMENTS. CORPORATE AMERICA MANAGEMENT HAS GONE OVERBOARD WITH ALL THEIR POWER AND CONTROL. STOP HUMANA KAROSHI. STOP HUMANA KAROSHI.
