The company markets itself as non-profit and caring about the people it serves and their employees, but this is FALSE!  I was hired as a counselor to help the clients with all areas of their life (housing, insurance, benfits, etc.) and worked there for over 5 years.  When co-workers in  my depratrment left, I was given their job responsibilities onto what I was already doing, all without added compensation or acknowledgement from management, I was expected to do the additional work and that was that (which I did w/o complaint).  When COVID hit, I was laid off because my position  "does not bring in money", lol, no kidding, 90% of upper management doesn't bring in  money, but they kept their jobs.  If you are not part of the management clique or ever question upper management, you will be targeted for termination.  One of the upper managers walks around the building every 15 minutes, and even admitted 90% of the job was walking around!  Pay is VERY low, almost poor status level, for ALOT work and stress; STAY AWAY!

Management is sketchy and not supportive. The job will wear you out mentally, physically, and emotionally with no support. You will only be given negative feedback and none of the extremely exhausting work you do will be acknowledged. It was not the consumers I minded working with. I wanted to be there to help them. However, management used charts and graphs instead of human interactions to determine how many consumers to a caseload. I gave feedback many times to many people because it was too much. It back fired because like I said management is sketchy. I would not recommend this place at all. Specifically this job and I wouldn’t be surprised if many violations are found within this company soon.

It's a piece of cake to get hired. You'll soon realize the work load is TOO much because the constant turnover means you're always covering for someone else. The staff & low level managers are expected to do everything while Directors and VPs ride easy blaming issues in the various programs on suspecting staff/managers, instead of designing real solutions. Not breakfasts/cookouts/awards but actual solutions. 

The job culture/compensation/benefits are probably great for individuals just starting out to get work experience in human services. Employees who understand the difference between functional and dysfunctional environment, however, will probably leave after 1-2 years. Programs implemented were not well planned and the more responsibility you take on the more you realize, behind the scenes the company leadership are blissfully dysfunctional.

Humanim has been listed consistently in the press as a Top Baltimore workplace in recent years. Still, although top executives and management level are well-compensated and motivated to pursue innovative programs, support staff are underpaid and, in many instances, overworked -- tasked with overreaching goals.  All-in-all, they're a great group of people who are encouraged by management to participate in committees and contribute to relevant company issues, i.e. diversity and reorganization.  Generally, the most rewarding parts of the job remain the friendships made and pride in projects well-done.  The most difficult part of the job are the frustrations of ever-increasing work and constant procedural changes.

This company boasts about "person-centered" treatment, but what I have seen there has been quite the opposite. The Residential program is horribly unorganized and it's clear to see most people are clueless with no direction. Communication is poor. Managers and counselors are divided and do not collaborate nearly enough. Managers make decisions about clients without input from counselors, who are the ones who see these clients daily. There is barely any protocol to take in a [potentially] dangerous situation. As a result of disorganization, they often lose paperwork (to which they blame the author(s) ) and often leave clients without medication. These clients are so wonderful and deserve so much more than what this program currently offers. Potential is there if people put effort into the work they do (more pay would help).

I immediately felt connected to the mission and my coworkers are great. There is so much flexibility to do your job and I'm learning a lot.  The management staff care about us and give us lots of opportunity to weigh in on decisions and to have our voices heard.  I really feel valued. I'm enjoying learning about racial equity and their approach to inclusiveness is commendable, giving all staff the opportunity to lean and set commitments for equity. I would really recommend this company.  They are creative and have create partnerships with other non-profits and businesses. The only thing I would change is increased compensation. Short of that, I love my job and Humanim! 

Humanim has taught me valuable lessons when it comes to working with people who have developmental and mental illnesses. Mental health has a harsh stigma attached; leaving those who suffer from the illness with a feeling of loneliness and discouragement. I have learned that diversity isn't just about who you are and where you come from. Diversity is also about accepting people who are just like you; regardless of the stigma that is attached to them.

There are pros and cons to working for Humanim. The pro is the flexibility in work schedule...no one was really clock watching or breathing down your neck. On the other hand it felt as if the possibility for career advancement was hindered if you did not socialize with certain individuals...this is not a place for career advancement if you do not care for work place politics...or if you can maneuver in such a way, it might be a good fit. You can fly under the radar here and be okay...but just okay.

Overall a pretty good company to work for.  Learned a great deal re: online trainings and other in house workshops,  Enjoyed working and helping the consumers to reach their goals and  to help intergrate  them back into the communities  . Some of the challenges of working for the program were high turnovers of both staff and Supervisors. This made it hard to build a working repore as there was no stability in those positions. especially being a part time employee.  I can say working with the clients was the most rewarding of all.

Starting off, everything seemed great,  but they need to learn how to train employees on the day to day structure when dealing with the clients (because ever client is different). Poor classroom structure (class rooms are unorganized, everything goes with the flow), that doesn't suit ever clients abilities, which prevents many who are higher functioning from learning. Too many cliques internally/  favoritism shown / inappropriate conversations / lack of team work amongst employees, taking away from the clients meaningful days.
