I worked at ICL PROS as an intern as a part of my masters level coursework in a social work program in NYC. Overall, I would rate my experience there as a positive with a few nagging negatives.

A typical day for a social worker at ICL PROS would start off with a morning meeting to get everyone up to date with the population. After the meeting, everyone rushes off to their appointed schedules. Every social worker is assigned to run a group therapy session at certain hours and also meet with individual clients in between them. The group therapy sessions run on a curriculum. The individual sessions cover MH/SA discussions and goal related updates. This is usually what happens throughout the day until the weekly meetings in the afternoon.

Although an individual day for a social worker may seem isolated and busy, everyone who works at ICL PROS always look out for each other. Whenever a social worker needs to get a group covered, someone is always willing to help out. With supervision, you can also get all of your life and work stress eased out. 

My issues with ICL PROS that it can be a high pressure and unpredictable environment. Many social work agencies typically have these two issues but at ICL PROS, there is a constant need to have work done in a very timely manner. As an intern, I only had to work with 7 clients. However, a standard social worker would have a caseload up to 20+ and must be able to be on top of various assessment/paperwork. With this much work, it is also difficult to meet with supervisors. ICL PROS can be chaotic and can cancel appointments very easily.

If you value a work culture that encourages growth, mental health, and well-being, this is not the place for you. Work/life balance is unheard of within the residential setting. In fact, supervisors often encouraged case managers to work off of the clock. I entered ICL as an on-call staff and was required to work a set schedule. After three months I asked to be treated as an on-call staff and to be contacted when there was work and was told I would be terminated because they wanted me to maintain a part-time schedule each week (they often pushed for full-time). Despite being there 2-3 days a week, I was required to maintain a full caseload--being given less than half the time of any other staff to perform the same duties. The turn over rate was extremely high because staff were often treated like machines, rather than human beings that need rest and care. The clients often stated that the high turnover of the staff negatively affected them. Most clients were reluctant to work with new case managers because of this. I did my best to meet the needs of the residence because I care about the clients, despite performing tasks outside of my role. When I drew the line and created a boundary, I was discarded, despite the quality of work I regularly provided. Towards the end of working here, I was so burnt out and exhausted that I was unable to sleep and suffered panic attacks. ICL routinely disservicing the staff and clients and is failing miserably at upholding their mission.   

If you respect yourself, your life and the lives of those you serve, please don't work here.

I've only been working here 2 months and I am actively searching for something new. This just isn't for me, my coworkers are cool and I'll miss them when I move on, but this is too much mess. This place is very disorganized, the clients are some of the worst I've had to deal with, and for some unknown reason the hours are 9 to 5:30 instead of 5:00. Theres no teamwork between programs. Everyone likes to throw all the work on the case managers. 

The office is opened up and there's no desktops at most tables. I had to wait several weeks for a work phone and laptop. There are people in this program that are entitled, rude and even violent, but no one cares. They're allowed in the program anyway even tho they pay no rent and often threaten to kill the workers. I'm not exaggerating when I say I've never had a group of clients so annoying, lazy and disrespectful. These people just don't wanna do anything for themselves. 

There are people here who are completely unmedicated and are deep in their mental illness. They need a much higher level of care than ICL can give but yet they're not sent elsewhere. 

The apartments are busted and worn out, and management takes forever to fix anything. I wouldn't even recommend coming here for the experience, there's other places to work.

One pro is the people I work with are very helpful and kind, but I still can't wait to move on. 

A day on the job changes daily! I work closely with mentally ill adults, with a census of 72 clients who lives all over Brooklyn. I supervise 8 Case Managers, who deals with client crisis frequently. A day of completing paperwork in the office can quickly turn into rushing to the hospital because a client is displaying symptoms of their diagnosis, or making impromptu home visits due to complaints of guest in the apartment. The pros of being in the social work field teaches you the power of patience, understanding, communication and most importantly, empathy. Unfortunately, I run a program with a Director who does not share the same values, and who exhibits extremely poor leadership and communication skills. I am a huge believer in cultural competence and accepting others as they are despite their ethnic background, which I feel ICL takes seriously. The hardest part of my job is the lack of communication by my Director, who I personally feel they think they are running the program on their own, and does not have to inform me, the Supervisor about what is going on. However, it does not deter me from coming to work everyday and enjoying what I do, which is making a difference in peoples lives and creating change.

This place is by far the worst company to work for. Simply because of Upper Management. Upper Management is very sneaky, manipulative, unfair, unsupportive, they keep division between the workers. Management is very dismissive and will make you feel like a worthless worker for having a voice or an opinion. They’ll ask
you for your opinion then dismiss what you say. Then why ask?!  This is place is full
of Devilishly managers! You’re  the worker and thats all you’re!  This place SUCKS! Do not waste your time or energy applying with this company. If you’re working in Brooklyn beware of the micromanagement managers, they love control &
manipulation. They will overwork you as long as they don’t have to do the work. You will be miserable working 5 days a week here. The funny thing is I’ve witnessed workers in different departments working under the same management  with exact same views on upper management. Its sad that as a new worker when the cleaning crew tells you to run for the hills. Its a pure HEADACHE. Might I add the clients are treated like inmates by upper management. They don’t see them as humans they look them as undeserving individuals. This place is The WORST. 

This place would be a rewarding place to work if the superiors came down and checked what is really going on in the location where I was working. Honesty is not valued. Individuality is undervalued. There is no real learning curve there. Its a sink or swim mentality / culture.  Its a bully team that rules the roost, like a frat club. Everyone is in their feelings They will manufacture the most incredulous lies about you to make you feel unwanted and excluded to eventually squeeze you out. You will mostly likely need to maintain some form of services yourself to be treated for PTSD as I am now doing, in regards to the way I was treated there. The CEO needs to come down and re-evaluate the people he has in position, make some moves and hire some truly good hearted people with souls to help carry out that mission statement.  The only thing that made this job worthwhile was the handful of individuals that were honest workers and of course many of the clients I had the honor of working with. They will be missed. 

The work environment was too relaxed, ghetto and gossiping. The clients fed off the toxicity of how the staff conducted themselves and behaved worsed. There was always constant drama  especially between the case management and front desk staff. The place of work was so bad that the client attacked and injured one of the case managers for getting reckless. 
The staff weren't used to doing work except the bare minimum to get by. 

The work balance and personal life sometime conflicts because there was never time for families. If you're loyal and work like a dog then you're guaranteed job security. Otherwise, you're screwed.

The place won't get better as long there's terrible workers in the environment. 

The company could do better with paying their employees to commensurate with the cost of living and experiences. As for the insurance,, it's too pricey.

If you are being considered for employment with this company, look out for warning signs during your interviews. These signs will be what you will experience if you decide to accept employment with ICL. Very arrogant, prideful, disrespectful, unprofessional mid to executive level leadership who do not care about the employees, and do not know how to be and are not interested in being leaders. Their only concern is what you can do for them for them to look good and receive praise. Very dysfunctional company. Managers and supervisors are leaving this company rapidly. That should say a lot about some of these Vice Presidents and Senior Vice Presidents, but it does not because the executive leaders don’t hold them accountable and lets them do whatever they want to do. You are expendable to them. A high salary is not good enough to hold a good employee. I regret the day that I chose to work for this company, but I was also deceived. It was a waste of my time. 

Worked as Admin. Assistant, usually the first to arrive in AM.  I typically start up all equipment fax, copiers, printers etc.  Take minutes each day during morning meetings of visits.  Manage mountains of reports, updating various lists, medical billing in Anaszi, custodial of  Metro cards daily. Management is horrible, lack training, such as how to respectfully and professionally converse with staff. they reassign their workloads to staff, want you to spy on employees and inform management of their ill doings.  Management creates a hostile working environment, which is why I left.  My co-workers were the best. The hardest part of the job was balancing stress of consumers as well as management.  MOST REWARDING PART OF THE JOB WAS KNOWING EACH DAY I MADE A POSTIVE DIFFERENCE IN THE CONSUMERS LIVES by encouraging, being resourceful and just being a friend.

Interaction on a daily basis with individuals diagnosed with mental illness and other health problems. Use motivational interviewing skills daily for encouragement and uplift client's moral. Follow-up phone calls to ensure medications are in place, perform schedule fire-drill. Monitor medication; BP, insulin and controlled substance responsibility. 

Being proactive, and using analytical thinking during crises, prevention measures. Try to maintain a cohesive work environment.

The hardest part of the job is watching individual with mental illness suffer unnecessarily; stop taking medications, no support system in place.

I enjoy helping other, providing them with education of their rights and assist with reunification with families, help obtain benefits. Making referrals and connecting to resources.
