INFIRMARY HEALTH

I worked at Mobile Infirmary and can honestly say this is a horrible place to work. The biggest issues are the culture, drama ETO (earned time off) and rampant favoritism.

-Old School Mentality-
The hospital is run with an old school/old administration mentality. VPs, Directors and Managers have little desire to change or improve processes using advanced technology and methodologies. Errors are constant because much of the work is still completed manually. The system is still very much functioning in analog when the rest of the world is digital. They claim to want advanced technological change, but in actuality come up with every reason possible to justify their current antiquated processes. One of the reasons for this is because most VP’s/Directors don’t have advanced degrees or employment beyond Infirmary Health. They have worked their way up into these upper level positions and refuse to retire or grow with the rest of society and the world.

-Do Not Make a Mistake-
Whatever you do, do not make a mistake – even one that’s incredibly insignificant. Everyone from your manager to director to VP will be apprised of the “issue”. The culture at Infirmary Health is to find someone else’s mistake and gleefully and maliciously bring it to everyone’s attention: your-error-makes-me-look-better. It’s an exceptionally unprofessional work environment where drama is encouraged. Directors and VP’s thrive off of this culture. And do NOT trust HR or Employee Relations to help with any concerns as they are at the crux of this institutional problem.

-Forget New Ideas-
The health system may claim to want to hire new talent with fresh ideas, but they really don’t. Plan to be held back from actually improving processes AND ostracized for wanting to be progressive. As previously stated the administration here will never understand how behind the times they truly are.

-ETO/MILEAGE REIMBURSEMENT- 
“Earned Time Off” – is the time off accrual process and it is awful. New employees accrue approximately 22 days a year. This sounds good at first, until you’re hired and find out that you have to use your ETO to get paid on holidays or when your sick or for vacation. The health system recognizes 8 holidays (New Years Day, Mardi Gras, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Black Friday, and Christmas Day). Any ETO that you accrue essentially goes towards getting paid on holidays or if you were hired just before a holiday – you don’t get paid!! Yes, that goes for professional and managerial level positions. Also, if you travel for your position, the mileage reimbursement rate is 44 cents per mile. The federal rate is 58 cents. Yet again, the system failing its employees by not even keeping up with the feds.  

-Too Much Talk / Drama-
Everyone at Mobile Infirmary loves to talk to the point where they waste half the day talking about nonsense/non-work related topics. Employees and managers alike talk about everyone and everything – instigating and fueling drama is the name of the game. They also meet about the same things over and over and over as if you’ve never talked about them before. What's concerning is they don’t even realize that that they do this.

-Facilities/Resources-
The hospital and work facilities are dreadfully old/outdated and DIRTY. Mismatched furniture, peeling carpet and stained stick tile from the 70’s are the conditions most employees work in at Mobile Infirmary. Patient halls and rooms are filthy. Some of the halls and units smell of urine. Its a really gross work environment.

-Positives-
There is a merit system, so if you have a good evaluation and the hospital has a good year you may see a raise annually. It’s not significant, 1% - 3% on average, but its still something. 

If you are considering working at IH/MIMC, I recommend that its truly out of desperation and strongly encourage you to continue looking for other employment.

I was employed for the Infirmary Health Care System for almost ten years. In the ten years I gained the respect of fellow physicians and their protocols. I ensured reports were correct as well as the billing to all patients. I had hands on care with patients daily and ensured a safe and comfortable environment for both the patients and the family with the patients. I also participated in surgery cases, high level of computer work as far as billing , charging , checking diagnostic images to ensure they were up to par to turn in for correct diagnosis and help tot he patients. Corporate Compliance was definitely an addition to my learning experience. I learned all modalities and what they required to fulfill the billing and images to present to the fellow physicians. My other position at the Prometric Computer system allowed me to use my education in Human Resource Management . I was given the opportunity to develop all schedules, promote, reprimand when needed, provide training and coaching for all employees. I learned a great deal from this position. The computer level was high in demand and I had to maintain in both positions a certification to ensure I was up to par with my skills to perform my position to the best of my ability. The hardest part of the job was to always maintain a positive attitude and try to maintain a safe and comfortable environment for all employees and patients. There were difficult times where I had to think outside of the box to ensure that everyone was happy or given the opportunity to express their complaints so I could address it in an appropriate manner. I enjoyed working with the public and I feel I did a good job maintaining a comfortable environment for all those that came in to either Prometric Testing Facility or the Infirmary Health System.

There’s no advancement or change in this department . You can be here months and get told about possible promotions and you never ever see them. It’s like you spend all your time learning and you don’t even have the opportunity to use your knowledge. Basically run medications to different floors. IV room is another ballpark. No matter how Good you get in other departments, they won’t train you in the IV ROOM. I’ve spent and used more knowledge in the retail setting. I came to the hospital to obtain and use more knowledge of the hospital side and IV room. As far as the other departments, you will spend weeks on the same thing.   You spend forever working on the same thing over and over while certain team leaders sit down all evening telling you to run this and that. Holidays, don’t expect to get off for them even with months in advance request. As far as vacations go, you are NOT allowed to request a vacation you planned off if it’s your weekend to work, unless someone can switch with you, and who knows their plans that far in advance. It’s not earned time off, it’s more what’s convenient for them; however, you’ll cover a 3rd shifts workers weekend for them. It’s only 1st and 2nd second shift who loses that ETO benefit.

Overall there is a ton of job security here. Management is more than happy to work with you. Everyone in the office is friendly and engages with one another. Every office has its hickups. Some months theres a negative vibe. Other moths its great. Personally I love the open door policy management has with staff. Communication and processes vs. How senior employees wanted things done would kinda muddle things up with what management wanted done. Issues were not fully communicated (due to work load I believe) and remote access seemed to be an issue over the pandemic. Not a fan of the attendence policy. If you have to call in for ANY reason that isnt accompanied by a doctors note stating you are unable to return to work it is a mark against you even if you have ETO. Between life and a pandemic its not the best policy in the world. Its not awful though. You do have some wiggle room in there. All in all the people are great. Management is great. Communication was a little rocky at times but do'able. 8 out of 10 would recommend. 

Enjoyed representing infirmary health although it has become quite a bit political over the last few years. Infirmary health system spans several cities/counties, several major hospitals and ancillary clinics. Ethical issues arise regarding consultations. Great business if your practice is infirmary owned, not so much if you are a private practice with privileges. When it's not about money, it's always about the money. It's about on par with modern healthcare. 20% clinicians, 80% administration. Several blockades in the name of "patient safety". Too much micro management prevents patient care. One task can require flipping this switch, check this box, put this sticker here, need a cosign to do this, document this in not one two but three places. In the meantime they are in the background deciding if it needs to be documented in a 4th place...the answer is yes.

I work in the billing office in Fairhope. The pay is fair. The turn over rates are really high because of the management. Employees quit all the time because of management. The manager there is extremely rude and micro-manages. These people literally harass employees when they do something wrong. Poor training.  They have a trainer that does not train. The time trainer talks all day and will not train anyone. She is a racist. Management pretends to care and lie right in her employees face. She shows favoritism towards certain people of color. Majority of her words are subliminal and rude. Management needs to be investigated due to the amount of employees that quit. Also, the amount of black employees that are hired are extremely low. This office has been revamped however when K took over it went downhill. Rude horrible bias attitude. Racial discrimination. Favoritism toward with tenure employees. EEOC please investigate.

Come in early and wait for first shift’s time to be completed, wait to get in your shared desk in a cubicle, then hurry up to get ready for your shift.  I learned if you don’t ask for information, updates or other questions you won’t be able to correctly do your job. Supervisors idea of getting information out and communicating is given only to a few. The shifts are treated differently from food offered in cafeteria, to missing meetings, treats and other important information. That department has no windows, it’s gloomy down there. The hardest part of the job is knowing that you’re going nowhere, you need the job and management knows it too! They use that against you in pay, benefits and evaluations. The only things I loved about the job were the patients, some staff members, and helping others. 

If you want to work for a company that only looks at the money with a management team that treats you like just a number with no knowledge on how to provide patient care with a nursing degree, this is the place for you!  The culture is so bad that mid management is scared to be involved and utilize the degrees they have earned in properly caring for patients.  Service is awful and I would never let a family member go to this health system.  Upper management acts like they are better than all of the employees and staffing is so short because they are paying for upper management to go on trips.  They would rather fire nurses and leave the floors short staffed than evaluate expenses in other areas.

As at Wayne General Hospital, I was able to work in both home health & in acute hospital, although due to lower capacity, primarily worked in home health here. I enjoyed home health lots. Enjoyed getting to know the families & patients. Enjoyed the appreciation on their parts. I was made to feel part of their families if time allowed, & appreciated this on their parts. As in home health always, I handled many emergency situations in-homes, & stayed in close contact with MD's & the home health supervisor/s. I made & kept schedules, charted, & stayed in close contact with other members of the team. Home health is great. Perhaps the most concerning part of the job is traveling to areas that are not safe (dogs, people who are known for drugs, other crimes, cigarette smoking environments).
