This is a good position for some first entry students maybe. The pay is low for what you are expected to do for the day.Long hours of standing and barely any good conditions to work, things around are cheap and old. Barely any communication and connection between the facility and the downtown main office. You are told one good things when you start, but later you find out things are not that pink and good. One hour lunch is not paid and you get to stay one more hour. You are chosen where to work based on bias and how management and supervisor perceived you on first day and from the whole gossip around that is going on. Favoritism is a lot of what is going on, what other say to the supervisor about you defines where you go to work. This creates toxic environment. If you are looking for fun and good 9 to 5pm job this is not the case. The actual pay is way below what you expect. And the heath benefits are not as better.You have to pass 6 months probations to complete the job requirements, so a lot of people disappear on the first week.

If you are looking for job security, a consistent work schedule and good health, dental, vision benefits and paid time off (i.e. vacation, sick and personal leave), you may want to consider working as a Public Service Representative for the Illinois Secretary of State.  If you are a people person and enjoy helping other, this is the job for you.  You will assist customers from the time the doors open, until the facility is closed for the day.  As a PSR,you will meet people from all walks of life because you will be working with the general public daily. There is rarely a slow period or dull moment.  I found that the managers tend to be quite receptive to ideas and suggestions from employees.  Especially if those suggestions will help make the facility run more effectively.

To problem solve all aspects of customer inquiries and complaints. I've learned that when you give your all to help people, be it High Level Management or subordinates, people appreciate your efforts. I have worked with all levels of management and I have enjoyed every bit of it. My past and previous co-workers are great people. I extend myself to them in any way I can. I problem solve all their problems and also show then how to get solutions for themselves. The hardest part of my job was walking away after 12 yrs of service. The most enjoyable part of my job I will remember is my interaction with the customers. I developed a closeness with the people of the State of IL.

Current Position-Printing Coordinator
I have learned quite a bit working within the Budget section of Vehicle Services Department.  A typical employee does not understand all of the steps that are taken to be able to order paper products for this office. After having worked this position for a couple of years now, I can see that this Office does not just go with the first offer.  We test the product to make sure it meets our needs, is the lowest price available and is from a vendor that can do business with the state of Illinois.  The hardest part of this job, is making sure the vendors understand that we need the product when agreed upon.  Sticking to delivery schedules is very important for the day to day business of this office.

On a typical day at work I was required to process driver license applications for the public, administer driving and written tests.  I learned how to operate the computer system to run driver license history so an application could be completed.  The managers I had were very informative and always took the time to teach new procedures.  The people I worked with were fun and interesting.  The hardest part of my job was telling someone  they were not allowed to get a drivers license.  The most enjoyable part of my job was being able to administer all the tests required and see someone receive their drivers license.

Repetitive work, good coworkers for the most part. Some customers are horrible to deal with but the majority are good. Management is uncaring and has their interests at heart. The union is okay, but they could be more effective and on point. The pay is very low compared to other state agencies. Springfield often changes the rules with no forewarning. They have changed the days and hours on us multiple times in the last year or so. They recently added 2 shifts so we are constantly short handed at the beginning of the day and the end. Low healthcare costs. 

What is the best part of working at the company?
The state has decent benefits. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The relationship between the management team and the staff. The poor condition of the facility. The general disregard for the employees and their safety.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
A toxic atmosphere with poor communication, bad leadership, bullying and retaliation.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Providing driver's licenses, IDs and some vehicle services with loads of micromanagement in between.

Poor training, no accountability whatsoever, no backing from management..employees have a union that’s useless. Employees are getting SCREWED by the state! 10yr employees make the SAME as newbies! Managers make 5% more than a PSR, you read that right.. FIVE percent. Average PSR makes 40k. So be nice to them, the pay SUCKS! You get $25 a week extra for being able to certify CDLs, very dangerous and the state doesn’t see any issues , they want the CUSTOMERS happy. Employees were great at my facility.. it was MANAGEMENT that terrible! SOS has a high turnover rate, my facility is small and lost 7 out of 8 employees in ONE year. Apply at your own risk!

Excellent Place to work. Co-Workers are outstanding and no question is unreasonable. Managers do not micro-manage. Work requirements are defined in a fairly competent manner. A typical work day includes but not limited to identifying the most outstanding requirement, trouble shooting any daily problems etc. The hardest part of the job is researching/analyzing new requirements. The most enjoyable part of my job is working with my co-workers and interfacing with my end-users.

What is the best part of working at the company?
The 11th & 26th, only days to be excited for.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Favoritism. If you fall in the category of a hard working person, keep your head down and work you’re shift, in any other job you’d be doing right. Here. Not so much.

Working with general public is a learning experience. Any kind of team effort seems to be frowned upon.

Posted in a single spot for 8 hours, constantly micro-managed.
