Independent Bank

It seems that what you experience at work depends on your location and manager.  There are people who really love their team and the company.  There are others who never really get the full Independent experience.  
Unfortunately most of the important information is filtered down through the managers and if your manager isn't on board for letting you know of any benefits the company offers then you are left out.  The company does have an intranet with helpful tips or information but to take the time to sort through everything is time consuming and has to be done while working.  Plus, you have to know what you  are looking for.  
I don't feel like managers are held accountable to keep the culture consistent across the board.  
It seems like Independent is a really great company but the further you are away from corporate or if your manager isn't pro-active then you are left out of the full experience.

My day started off by picking up my mail batches at three different post offices, then on to open bank, connect bank to Federal Reserve  server, and to the other neccesary servers.  I printed out neccesary reports for the whole deposit operations department,  After getting everything in order I then opened and processed between 500-700 pcs or mail depositing checks, data entry, scanning remmitance into my pc and emailing remmitance to customer.  Then I balanced reports for deposit operations department, Balance entire C D control for all Memphis and branches of surrounding area. I loved the management, the co-workers.  I learned a lot about balancing reports, especially certificates of deposit.  Balancing the heavy work load and getting it all finished before bank closed after coming in at 5:30 a.m..  I enjoyed all my job so much.

This was a great place to work until 2017.  In 2017 Talmer Bank was taken over by Chemical and many Talmer people were let go or left in the process.  A large percentage of former Talmer personnel ended up at Independent Bank.  Needless to say, I believe there was a good reason why Talmer was taken over and I'm convinced that the management was the issue.  Unfortunately, many of these managers came to Independent Bank and brought their failing management style with them.  Since the Talmer invasion many good IB employees have left or have been forced to leave.  Until the Talmer influence is neutralized, the IB mortgage department will not be a good place to work.

The structure of this organization is terrible. They are extremely understaffed, try to overload their current employees with work that should be done by an entirely different department, and refuse to increase pay for services. They have no proper training, you will basically be thrown into your job. Their current employees with no training experience are the training department for new employees. There are some extremely nice people there but they also have a lot of people stuck in their ways. People in management positions who do not have very good people skills and don't know how to adapt to change. Small banks usually want to be big banks but still have a small bank mentality, this is an extremely accurate description for Ibank.

Each company has its perks and issues. Overall, it is a good place to work. Depending on your manager, you may have more flexibility and opportunity to grow with the company.  There is a lack of communication between all departments in the bank, which causes customer confusion and unnecessary escalations from senior management. There seems to be a struggle with IT and support when needed for department improvements and efficiency.  Senior Management very much has an older business and work model, work life balance is lacking. 

Very nice people. That’s the only positive. Training was a joke. Thrown into the fire. Constantly having other departments work & other peoples jobs added to your own. No opportunity for advancement.  Lots of ‘CYA’ by employees because they banknis so cheap they’re always looking to get rid of people. Auto loan department borders on criminal. They add fees for everything after the fact & without telling the customer, then laugh about it to each other. It’s bad. Stay away.

The most I learned was working at other branches. Much of the time I would never know where I am going to be until someone mentions it at the last minute. Any time I had a question, my home branch would shun me because we were the slowest branch and I should know more than what I asked. Management was very much into cliques and I wasn't in that group, thus I would get the short end of the stick a lot.
The program used was out of date and reminded me much of the early 2000s. It was just as slow and broke down often.

Independent Bank of Michigan is by far the very best Company, Team and Culture I have ever been a part of. They care more about their own people than any other company I’ve been a part of. Management desires you to succeed and grow as far as you desire to. Pay and Benefits could be a bit more competitive compared to the Financial Industry standards. Independent Banks culture and surroundings far outweigh the competing pay from the competition. 

Different branches have completely different cultures.  Don't get stuck at the wrong one.  Online training is a joke.  Not much accomplished while so much trouble-shooting is being done.  Equipment failures constantly.  Working software & procedure should be more streamlined.  Online courses available but little time to complete.  Short staffed locations result in poor training.  Better jobs out there.  Compensation is mediocre.

enjoyed my day to day job but there were co workers who often made the day difficult and came across rude and bossy. I enjoyed the repetition and opportunities to enhance my productivity with processing data entry.
