Reading the reviews it's easy to tell that the overwhelming "This is an awesome place to work"  comes from 511 which is the management building. It's sunshine and roses over there and they need you to believe it's awesome because the turn over rate is so high they are desperate. They can't keep servicing reps ..let me explain.

They love to micromanage.  I'm sure 511 gets paid well but they don't pay their reps nearly enough for the work they load them up on.  There is mandatory overtime and weekends for 6 months out of the year which when hired they are sketchy about. They will add additional duties not listed in your job description without added pay and expect you to be happy they did it.  They are currently using claim information to cold call members to push preventative services.  This is not listed either in the job description but you'll be forced to *sell* anyway.  Don't object as they don't see a problem with digging into people's medical files to pull this info to sell preventative services even. 

The have 5 core values they will tell you mean everything, yet there are no 5 core values in servicing. Management is incompetent and condescending.  They retaliate if you use any state provided sick time.  We constantly hire for this department due to the amount of work given, being micro managed and treated poorly and bad wages

We once had to sit through a meeting where they described the cost of our benefits package as a way to justify their need to pay us like garbage. 

There is 0 room for advancement either. 

We were told no raises this year as they couldn't afford it while bragging in a company meeting about record profits.  

So so many of us are looking for other jobs. They have no desire to make this a good place to work again. Labor is cheap and people are replaceable according to management. 

The insurance is good but if you don't think they won't deny their own employees life saving medications your wrong. They do and they have then seem baffled when these people need time off because they are sick. 

Run. Do not apply here.

IHA even 6 yrs ago was good but currently it's a dumpster fire and they keep adding gas with no plans to stop. 

In my time there the few employees with high skill levels, aptitude and intelligence were undervalued, misrepresented and overburdened. Those who gelled well with middle management(outside of work) were inline to be protected and advanced despite a serious lack of skills necessary to perform the job they are doing. Due to this many of the projects are over budget, late and are done with low quality and in many cases not even completed well. This ties into heavy dependency on consulting firms which drives up costs further and puts further pressure on. Also, the environment surrounding middle management is very political and not based on a productive work environment. In my experience there it looked like the company lacked the necessary leadership at that level that leads by example and is desperately needed to take on a challenging future for Healthcare.

The compensation is not great but very good benefits and generous PTO make up for it in a sense. Also, the company has great work life balance as most employees are not pushed and many people work less than the required hours unless there is a major government regulated initiative due. Most of the employees outside of IT and few within the department are kind and generous. Also, the company itself is involved in a lot of community work and does a lot of good for society. Upper Management have their heart and mind in the right place.

I hit the jackpot with the team I landed on. Everyone in the department is supportive and kind, certainly following the example set by management from the VP down to supervisors. I always felt connected to my team, even when working remotely. Managers were easy to approach and always made time to connect with team members at least once a week. They also showed a huge amount of trust towards employees, which empowered me to take risks and speak up in times I may have otherwise kept quiet. If you're lucky enough to be scooped up by the right department, you'll spend most days enjoying your work and your coworkers.
Unfortunately, there is a huge lack of growth opportunities. HR is unwilling to support managers that want to reward exceptional employees. There isn't any internal training for advancement. Pay is relatively low unless you happen to be on the senior leader$hip team. There's also a shift in policies that make working remotely more restrictive and at the discretion of HR, instead of dept leadership. 
Additionally, senior leadership is sending confusing/conflicting messages about their strategic plan and overall transparency took a nose-dive in the past year. 

I worked for IH for several years. The past 2 years I noticed a dramatic change in corporate culture where employees were valued less. I my last several months there were many co-workers who were pursued and offered positions with other companies (myself included) which IH refused to match. I even heard that a VP made a comment of "Good let them leave" and even observed other longtime, well respected employees and managers even be forced out. From day 1 there was little to no official training for the position as it was more of a learn as you go. I was part of a smaller team and had several managers who had zero interest in making sure my skills wee developed and "interim" managers were willing but unfortunately unable to due to bandwidth. The company does offer a great amount of PTO and a solid 401k match which does not kick in until your 1 year anniversary and then it takes 5 years after that to be fully vested. After seeing what the market is for comparable positions (especially with remote work being much more common) what IH pays is NOT competitive at all even with the solid benefits package (which is their justification for the low pay). The best part of this job, in hindsight, is the work-life balance offered by the flexibility however that is also dependent of department and manager. 

A typical day started at 7am logging into the system as quickly as you came in as there was always a supervisor keeping an eye on you. Supervision frowned upon any interaction between employees.
Overtime was mandatory between 10-20 hours per week, depending upon how far behind they where.
Training was minimal at best, new computer system things where changing constantly, not only daily but some days these changes where hourly.
QA department was not trained in how to adjudicate a claim so there was a constant fear of receiving a QA notification, you where allowed only 3-5 a month.
Co-workers where great.
Pay was horrible considering the amount of knowledge you where required to have and the lack of training that went with it. 
COB department did not appreciate anyone who had more experience or could process faster then employees who had multiple years of experience. 
It is sad working for one of the largest health care companies in the area and you make so little that you qualify for Medicaid. 
Temp employees are treated as outcasts and continually called TEMPS.
Unsure of how the remainder of the organization is run but if it is anything like the claims department, I seriously would not even consider working here.

Do yourself a favor and do NOT apply here!  They are rated one of the "best companies to work for" due to the fact they do NOT allow any of their negative reviews on the company to be seen let alone read.  The training is the worst as far as a health insurance company goes, they don't care about giving the correct information just as long as you lie through your teeth to the members and keep they saying thank you for the lies you are selling them.  Was let go for a "bad call" yet I was NOT allowed to listen to said call to even know that it was infact a bad call!  The HR department just stares at you and says nothing because she's too young and could care less.  The overall morale of this company is horrendous.  You get to watch people be tapped on the shoulder to be fired all day long but are expected to not worry about losing your job.  The customer service manager is very cliquey and if you're not in her clique then your out of a job.  Very high school atmosphere for grown adults.  I am sure this review will not be posted either.

The company as a whole is well balanced, fun and respects their employees including good benefits and work/life balance. I would not recommend anyone works in the COB department. There is too much on your plate, management only cares about metrics and scorecards each month and they tell you they have your back when disputing QA findings but they rarely dispute them. The roadmap each day is copy and pasted on what they specifically want and they will not consider what your priorities are. On top of this you have to handle phone calls from angry customers and providers on a daily basis and if the calls are not completed and closed out, management will hound you to get them done. They do not understand this position at all. If you need assistance they'll most likely be occupied and in meetings but then wonder why there was a lack in communication.

Training was an absolute joke! I've outlined and organized  everything we were told we handle, everything else gets transferred but yet you get dinged in QA for not doing something at a higher level. 
Let's talk about PTO. You get 6 hours every pay period, which is every 2 weeks. 26 weeks per year times 6. 156 hours. 
56 of them are required to be given by NYS Law. So you have to work 18 weeks to get the required NYS Sick time. You work 37.5 hours per week. So, you have to then work another 38 weeks to accrue 2 weeks of actual vacation. By that time, the year is OVER. You cant borrow from your vacation time so forget summer vacations. You can't take unpaid time off or you'll be written up. If you work in the medicare department, you work holidays. Go somewhere else where the pay is better but where management actually cares for their workers and customers/members!


I had the unique pleasure of using my people skills to work with all the executives and board members to support and train them to work smoothly with their device for the first time to acquire all necessary documents/emails to run their meetings. Utilization of SharePoint and what to do to save/markup/edit documents. OneDrive soon took over and showing them once again a new way to retrieve from a library repository for needed confidential documents. Maintaining the iPads for updates and supplying documentation to present new ways to accomplish what was needed to have their successful board of director meetings. Everyone was at a different learning level and I managed to train and be respected by all.

During my time at Independent Health as an Enterprise Quality Assurance Analyst, I had an amazing experience! The workplace culture was fantastic, and I genuinely felt like part of a close-knit team. Everyone was approachable and friendly, making it easy to ask questions and seek help whenever needed.

The management was great too! They were kind and supportive, providing the necessary guidance and resources for me to excel in my role. Working with different teams was a real highlight for me. I loved the opportunity to collaborate with so many talented individuals, and it gave me valuable insights into various aspects of the organization's operations.

All in all, my journey at Independent Health was incredibly rewarding. The positive work environment, supportive colleagues, and the chance to learn and grow both personally and professionally made it a truly memorable experience.
