The most stressful part can be managing a high volume of emotionally intense calls while ensuring each caller still feels heard and supported.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The work is meaningful and the mission is commendable, but the environment can be high-pressure with frequent turnover. Expectations are not always clearly defined, and communication can be inconsistent, which can make the role more stressful than necessary. High call volume, emotional intensity, and shifting expectations can create a demanding and at times disorganized atmosphere, especially for long-term staff.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
A typical day involves handling a steady stream of inbound calls while also completing scheduled outbound check-ins and intakes. Calls can vary widely in tone and complexity, so it requires staying focused, empathetic, and adaptable throughout the shift. Documentation is completed alongside or shortly after each call, making time management an important part of the role.

A fast paced and dynamic workplace that gives you an opportunity to interact with, and help seniors stay cognitively fit.  The day starts off with me leading an exercise routine i implemented.  After that me and my team take turns leading presentations of all kinds.  History, interactive, games and songs.  The focus is fun and we have a lot!

My co workers are just like me: hard working, intuitive, friendly and passionate about what we do.  You must be passionate to make it in this business.  The most enjoyable part of my job is the one on one with my clients when i can just listen to the amazing stories they have to tell me.  The hardest part of my job is saying goodbye.  

The main campus on Geary boulevard is a big beautiful building with spacious day rooms for seniors to enjoy programming, eat lunch and receive medication.  Staff are friendly, responsive and effective. The CEO and board make their presence known and reach out to us to get our feedback. I highly recommend this company to anyone.

I am truly grateful to be part of such a wonderful workplace. This has been one of the best positions I’ve ever held, and I enjoy working alongside an incredible team. The positive, authentic, and supportive people here have made my experience truly memorable.

I began my journey here as a CM 1, and I have been given the opportunity to grow into the role of CM 2. Since I first joined, I’ve witnessed growth within our team, and it’s been an honor to be part of this exciting progress.

Our management team deserves special recognition for being attentive, caring, and overall awesome. They consistently welcome suggestions and take the time to listen to team members, demonstrating sincere support for everyone.

Overall, this is a fantastic place to work, and I couldn’t be happier to contribute to such a positive and uplifting environment.

A typical work day consisted of working with your assigned clients {and often new client assignments}; 
I learned everyday that no matter what people still need people, they need companionship, they need to know that someone cares about them, and that someone loves them and will take care of them, I felt my role as the caregiver was extremely important and I took it very seriously 
Management, was fair and impartial 
The hardest part of the job was watching someone about to make a transition into the afterlife {when I care for someone I become fully invested and when they transition it really affects me, I give my heart and soul to my clients}
The most enjoyable part of the job is watching the smiles on the client's faces, and knowing you are responsible for that, it could be the smallest most insignificant thing but to them it's huge, and that makes it all worthwhile, there's nothing like a smile from someone, you know you've made them happy

This is the best company I have worked for, hands down! Many companies will give a big talk about values and philosophy, but Institute on Aging actually lives up to it. They like to hire compassionate, honest and intelligent leaders, you will succeed and the interactions and impact you have with the clients is so rewarding. The standards are high here and this organization is a leader amongst other providers. This company strives to be innovative and you will grow personally and professionally, and they always recognize you for good/consistent work. Flexibility, safety and work/life balance is important to IOA. I have been in my current position for about a year and I was just promoted, 4 team members were promoted to higher positions in my office alone in that last 12 months. We are growing fast and there will be lots more opportunities for advancement!

Yes it's a non-profit. Yes they have a mission. Yes they care about the community, however they don't care too much about their employees.

They sell you into their mission and always finds a way to bring up that it's a non-profit and will find ways to exploit you out of your job description. They will sell you to idea that what you're doing is seen and will open doors for your career.... you just need to be very patient or be looking at doors outside the company itself (6+ years and no promotion).

The higher up will push for changes. Unrealistic changes. They want the best of the best in the industry without paying their employees a proper living wage while overworking them. Continually adds more programs while current employees are already drowning in workloads. Programs that aren't fully polished which causes issues not just within the company but also to it's clients. 



Based upon our recent Engagement Survey results that saw 80+% employee participation, the overwhelming majority of our employees believe very strongly in IOA' s Mission. The organization is certainly far from perfect; however, great strides have been made - especially in the last two years - in compensation, benefits costs, technology and employee wellness programs.  Our location can be better, our turnover can be lower and we're nearly out of office space - but the culture here is very strong and our employees are typically happy and understand the struggles non-profits face versus for-profit organizations.

IOA is doing wonderful work helping seniors live independently and get the care they need.  This is done through many employees who truly care and go above and beyond in their jobs.  Unfortunately the working environment doesn't go far enough in appreciating their employees.  Don't expect a raise, even after working 10 years.  Morale can be low, depending on the department you work for.  Lots of employee turnover within the last 3 years.  Senior management could do a better job with employee retention.  How about downgrading those $200k + salaries and giving workers a raise or bonus for once?

I had no problems with my fellow coworkers as everyone was fairly nice. I love the PACE program that IOA has integrated for SF's geriatric community. However, the most difficult part of the job was working with multiple participants at any time while being understaffed. When I say multiple, I'm talking 5+ at any time. We would receive complaints from people feeling that they weren't being given the attention they needed, and I agree! It felt like a factory of trying to get as many people in and out of rehab as quickly as possible. 

I love IOA and the services they provide but as an employee, it was exhausting especially how the pay didn't reflect the workload.

They promote and keep poor management that think offering food will fix problems. They ignore real suggestions and think that pilling work on new staff will solve problems. Poor training/onboarding, poor communication from the top down, poor use of resources and funding. Every program has issues and don't provide enough support for the hard working front line staff that really do care about their clients. High turn over rate in programs that have the potential to be good if managment could get it together. They offer clinical supervision but management disregards staff with actual clinical skills.
