It’s nearly impossible to get 40+ hours, so you can only most likely do it on the side. 

Management is supportive and flexible, which is great! However, you will be frequently talked down to or shouted at  by the following: 

The people we serve: as many do not want a coach. Any time you try to enforce company policy, such as staying off phone or leaving break on time, the person served will yell and belittle you. In the most extreme case I had, one individual would frequently cuss me out and scream when I would not do my job the way he wanted me to. 

Workplace managers: If the employee I was supporting was off task or not performing up to standard, the manager’s frustration would be taken out on me. I was talked down to or even shouted at many times at different work sites. 

The person’s coworkers: since they had to pick up the slack if the person served was off task, their frustration was taken out on me. 

No matter what happens, you as the coach lose and are made to be the bad guy. There were some awesome people I have supported who had great managers, but that has become less common. 

It’s not a terribly difficult position, but just be ready to never be appreciated by anyone at the sites. The money is nice enough to be a solid second job. 

Although I’m new to the company I absolutely love it. It’s so much better than other company’s that offer the same type of services to  people with disabilities.  A typical day is supporting someone get acclimate in their community by visiting a park to exercise, volunteering or helping them find employment with job development at a local library. The job can be challenging, you must have a passion and heart to help. You should want to be a great advocate for individuals you support and immerse yourself in understanding of the population of people we serve. I enjoy providing support, helping them obtaining their goals and to live a fulfilling life.  I feel very seen and heard by my support manager and I enjoy my coworkers. 

Management is entirely supportive, and respect is always experienced. Furthermore, you will never encounter a power differential with a supervisor, rare for a near-minimum wage job. Moreover, you will have a say in what days & hours that you want to work. Person-centered method of interacting with cognitively challenged clients. However, there are strong elements of behaviorism, and it is not recognized and addressed. For example, you will encounter a mother, and she will lay out (her) behavioral expectations for her child. In that sense, you client's mother will be your de facto supervisor. Separately, know that jobless clients will require constant & active interaction, as opposed to working clients (who are autonomous). As it stands, there is no money, but this is a non-profit, of course.

Working at Integrated Resources has been an incredible experience. A typical day at work would be supporting and advocating for a Client/Person while He/She is at job site. I have learned that trust is built with consistency with the wonderful People that I support. The hardest part of the job is probably someone having severe behavior problems. Although , it has been very enjoyable. For example , learning that a couple of our Clients will be featured on A&E Channel is an enjoyable celebration. Fellow Co-Workers that I have had the opportunity to work alongside with are very kind, caring, compassionate, and dedicated. Management is extremely dedicated and hard working. It has been a pleasure to see IRI grow and support many hardworking People who are striving to be integrated into society.

IRI is a solid company to work for.  Helping adults with Developmental Disabilities find meaningful work and assisting them with being as independent as possible is incredibly rewarding on a daily basis.  The Management is very supportive and willing to help guide you to be the best coach you can be.  The job itself is not terribly difficult, but some days are certainly more challenging than others.  The only major downside with working here is there are no raises for the position, unless you apply and attain a higher level position within the company.  The lack of raises has to do with the company being fully funded by the state as opposed to a lack of willingness on management's part to want to give raises, and is therefore at the mercy of the state budget and whether they approve more funding for any given year.

Over the past years, I have gained valuable experience working in the Independent Living Skills (ILS) field, supporting individuals in building confidence, daily living abilities, and community independence, during this time, I developed strong communication, problem-solving, and time-management skills while working directly with clients and coordinating with coworkers, families, and supervisors.

I consistently maintained accurate documentation, followed care plans, and adapted to each client’s unique needs. I also learned how to handle challenging situations calmly and professionally while staying focused on safety and client progress. These  years have helped me grow in patience, organization, and teamwork, and strengthened my commitment to providing quality person-center end support.


I loved my clients while working for IRI (I still keep in contact with some). With the right client, the job can be very relaxed and rewarding. However, some clients are too severely disabled to be placed into this kind of program, making it difficult for the job coaches to navigate how to care for them. 

They do not require any major training or education in the field of mental and developmental disabilities and therefore you sometimes find yourself ill-equipped to deal with the sudden outbursts that can be very common with some of the clients. 

I did love my job when it was good, and I was very comfortable with it. However, the pay was too low to justify the difficult clients and for that reason I had to leave.

What is the best part of working at the company?
IRI can’t support its current coaches with hours agreed as P/F and still is hiring more!!!??? New hires should give it a second thought and make sure they receive what they agree on.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
1. Expecting to lose hours the night before or even 1 hour or minutes before departing to pick up clients in the morning. 2. Being scheduled for 3-5 hours in “mid-day”. That is between 11am-5pm which ruins both your AM and PM.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
It’s App based. No visit required to the company.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
The good thing is it’s one-on-one. But it’s different from one client to another. Some easy, some challenging as usual.

The goal of IRI is to work one on one with a client and help them gain independence through employment. Many clients do work and it depends on what client you are assigned to and the communication from the project manager to tell you how much support they will need. Some do not need much support at all, just a couple of check ins is enough. Others need 100% support and will need you to be by their side while they are working. A lot of IRI clients do not work, this is when clients build their work skills. They can find volunteer opportunities or take classes that will help them get a job. There is no typical day because each client is different and has their needs based on their disability.

Integrated Resources Institute is an excellent organization for which to work. I feel I am making a difference in people's lives. The management team is very supportive and attentive to whatever support I need to succeed. There is a great sense of community through online platforms like Teams to keep us all connected. I feel a sense of fulfillment because I can provide 1:1 support for a person to help them achieve their goals and seek employment in their interests.
