Integrated Services for Behavioral Health

This company pays lip service to all kinds of wonderful things they absolutely fail to live up to. I would give it 1's across the board if it felt honest, but they don't fully suck at some things. Regardless, there is no world in which what they offer is commensurate to what they ask, and they have become far too large, unwieldy, and inflexible a bureaucracy to meet their people where they are, no matter how long they've been with the company or how much they've sacrificed for their job. STAY AWAY. Seek employment elsewhere! There are opportunities to serve that offer more, ask less, and actually treat you like a human. To answer the suggested bullets:

- A typical day at work is thankless and frustrating. Sometimes, it's rewarding. Usually it isn't.
- I learned that working in mental health is bad for your mental health, particularly if you come from the "lived experience" track rather than the "formal education" track.
- Middle management is populated by caring, kind-hearted people whose hands are largely tied most of the time. Upper administration is bloated, aloof, dispassionate, and utterly disconnected from the day to day realities of the work and its people.
- Workplace culture depends on what part of the company you work for, but where I was, it was extremely toxic and filled with gossip, back-biting, and pettiness. This is a result of stress levels and lack of support.
- Hardest part of the job is realizing how unnecessary all the BS really is, how preventable, how fixable, and how the intractable rigidity of the company simply plows right through all of that to create a reality of stagnation and misery.
- The most enjoyable part of the job is the 3 or so times per year when you can actually reach and help somebody, in spite of the seemingly endless road blocks imposed by the people who are supposed to be helping and supporting you.

I worked as a master's-level therapist with this organization for about a year. Overall, my experience was mixed and seemed to depend heavily on the specific office and leadership.

One positive aspect was the quality of clinical supervision for licensure, which was helpful and supportive. However, outside of that, I often felt there was limited support in managing cases, especially as someone early in my career. I was given a caseload quickly after onboarding, and while there was some orientation, much of it focused on administrative policies rather than hands-on clinical training.

One challenge I noticed was the organizational structure. There appeared to be multiple layers of executive leadership, but fewer direct management positions available to support frontline staff such as therapists and community-based workers. At times, this created gaps in communication, clinical guidance, and day-to-day support for employees working directly with clients.

For a community-based role, the travel demands were significant, and reimbursement did not always feel proportional to the amount of driving required. Compensation for master's-level therapists also felt lower than expected given the workload, travel, and clinical responsibilities involved.

Compared to other mental health positions I’ve held, this role felt less structured in terms of training and support. My overall impression is that employee experience may vary greatly depending on the office location. For new graduates or early-career clinicians, it may be helpful to ask detailed questions about onboarding, case support, supervision, and management support before accepting a position.


I have worked for this agency in more than one role, and the experience can vary significantly depending on the location and leadership. Unfortunately, my current experience has been much less positive.

The biggest challenge has been the lack of support from management. When questions arise, it is common to hear, “I’ll find out and get back to you,” but follow-up rarely happens. This leaves staff trying to navigate policies, documentation, and clinical decisions on their own.

Training is another major area of concern. New employees receive a small amount of job shadowing, but after that are largely expected to figure everything out independently. There is very little structured training on documentation, treatment planning, or agency expectations. For a position with significant clinical and legal responsibilities, this level of onboarding is not adequate.

Another frustrating expectation is that even when clients clearly state they no longer wish to receive services and want to be discharged, staff are often instructed to continue repeated outreach attempts rather than honoring those requests. This can leave clinicians feeling like they are bothering clients who have already communicated their wishes, while also creating unnecessary administrative work and taking time away from clients who are actively engaged in treatment.

Overall, the mission of the agency is important, and there are many staff members who genuinely care about helping clients. However, inconsistent leadership, inadequate training, limited supervision, and unrealistic expectations make it difficult for clinicians to feel supported or successful in their roles.

Working at ISBH is a unique experience. depending on positions, there is built in flexibility to keep your own schedule and adapt your own service style. There is a constant flow of new clients to engage which is challenging but keeps things fresh. our new CEO has added additional supports for employees and managers to increase training opportunities and networking as well as making positive steps to address the growing demand for service providers/improve client access. PTO generates quickly and there are additional employee benefits like our car lease program to take advantage of. another great thing is that you get to meet folks of many different backgrounds both as clients and as peers in your respective roles. Our agency is unique because we often go where other providers do not, offering home based and community based services to folks who would otherwise be unable to participate in services due to any number of barriers including poverty, housing instability, unemployment/underemployment, or mental/physical health challenges. the agency provides a work phone and laptop as well as tech support. The best part of working for ISBH is the direct service to our community. if you have a heart for supporting folks in their fight against poverty, mental illness or other adversity this could be the place for you! 

ISBH is good at paying you for the job, but the expectations are unrealistic and uneven across the agency. Expectations were different for different people in the same positions. There is a lack of support and understanding from the executive team. Even when you directly identify what your program needs and you express those needs you are unsupported and told to do with less than you came with. My direct manager was supportive and helpful in my role. Above that there was a lack of understanding and constant changes. The executive team was constantly restructured and leaders changed hands 4 or more times in 3.5 years. That caused inconsistent leadership and repeated phrases of "I'm just learning the job." Leadership was always compiled of people who did not have experience in the program they were in charge of. Most lacked clinical experience which is really needed in the behavioral health field. In the program I was in there was no work life balance due to a lack of staffing. HR and executives made getting positions filled incredibly difficult and they showed no urgency. I filled two roles for a year and a half with no end in sight. That along with a lack of support despite constant report of needs along with unqualified leaders is why I chose to leave. At times was told to do things that were not ethical and went against my values and morals. I would not recommend this company if you want to have good physical health and mental health.

A typical day at ISBH is purpose-driven, community-centered, and deeply supportive. From day one, I felt like I had joined a family—one that genuinely cared about my personal growth and the well-being of every client we served. My clinical supervisor was incredibly hands-on, present, and invested in my development. I never felt alone. She created space for questions, reflection, and learning, while consistently modeling compassion and ethical care. The team was just as warm and supportive, offering collaboration, encouragement, and mentorship at every step.
Unlike other community mental health agencies in the area, ISBH never overwhelmed me with an unmanageable caseload. They are deeply aware of the risk of burnout and clarify that clients and clinicians deserve thoughtful, balanced care. I was treated like a professional, not a number, and encouraged to grow in a way that felt both challenging and sustainable. The most enjoyable part was witnessing real, lasting change in clients and feeling part of something significant.

A typical day involved reviewing and coordinating care for high-needs youth under the OhioRISE program. While the mission was meaningful, the work environment made it hard to stay motivated. Management often operated in cliques, gossiping about staff and fostering an environment that felt more like a high school cafeteria than a professional workplace.

I learned how to manage complex systems of care and navigate state requirements, but also learned firsthand how damaging poor leadership and toxic culture can be to morale and professional growth. The hardest part was enduring the emotional toll of feeling unsupported by leadership while advocating for my team members and the vulnerable families.

The most enjoyable part was making a difference in the lives of youth and collaborating with external partners who genuinely cared about outcomes.

Lots of reasons to work here, but also issues. If you want to do community health work and you already have the skills or are willing to jump into the field with little training and figure it out as you go, can be a really good job. I meet with about 2-4 clients on a typical day. You have the power to decide how you use your time (as long as you bill 24 hours of service in a week, which adds up). Building positive relationships with clients is the best and most difficult part of the job. The main issues with this job are that you are often quite isolated as a worker, since everyone is working individually in the community, and there is not enough support and training opportunities offered by management. You'll be surprised by how little training you have before you're expected to navigate complex, stressful, and even sometimes dangerous situations.

This was once a great company to work for. I looked forward to going to work everyday. Then everything changed. Management changed, they stopped caring about the employees, the mission, the values, lack of support for employees, lack of empathy, absolutely no support from any management anymore. It is no longer an enjoyable experience. It use to be a place that didn’t feel just like a “job”. It was very family oriented and we all had a mission to helping the clientele we served. Once management changed, that changed, and it was down hill from there. Managers no longer cared what you had to say, no longer cared about your opinions, the people in nelsonville was useless to try to speak to. Definitely sad what’s it’s become, and how miserable it is to go to work daily now. 

I thoroughly enjoyed my time working at Integrated Services. However, I must express my concern that upper management’s appreciation primarily focused on clinical staff, while Residential Behavioral Health Workers, who undoubtedly face the most challenging responsibilities at Integrated Services, received no recognition. To this day, no single “shout out” or simple thank you has been given to the Residential Behavioral Health Workers (RBHWs). This lack of recognition and appreciation from upper management likely contributes to the high staff turnover rate within residential facilities.
