What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Inspection report. Filling out daily observations report and many useless meetings. Not great company culture. No company philosophy. Just corporate is flooded with recent college graduates who has no real world experience. Corporate recruiter desperately hires young lgbtq females in male dominated industry. They come to create drama and chaos. None of these false reports were investigated. It was like nothing ever happened. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
No culture. Company needs serious restructuring. Hiring real world experienced people. 
If you report an issues they we’re beating around the bush until it get disappearing into air. Recent young inspectors come with more pay than loyal veterans. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Many meetings with Epc contractors and many safety meetings and managers meeting on every Thursday. Many walks during inspections.

I worked at the Combined Cycle plant in Satsop Wa for over ten years. Recently the Satsop plant has been taken over by managers that are coming from a soon to shut down coal plant near by. These guys have changed the culture and work environment into what they are used to at the coal plant. The current management seems to favor the maintenance and electrical teams. The plant manage seems to have a distaste for the operations crew. He thinks all operators are lazy. The current Ops manager is Intelligent but has no business being manager, but sense he is friends with the plant manager they keep him on. Unless your a good old boy from TransAlta I would steer clear of this place. Pay is good for the area but not industry standards. The medical Benefits are terrible  This place could be good but the current management needs to go back to the coal plant. They have fired or have ran off a lot of years of experience at the plant just to hire friends from a near by facility.

The company is growing quickly and does not have the administrative steps in place to adjust to the changes. It really is a hot mess. There are not enough employees and those that exist are not always properly trained as to how to do their jobs. Everything is rush, rush, rush and deal with the consequences later. Corporate headquarters is in Chicago but if you are not located in that area, there is rarely room for advancement and they seem to only allow certain people to work remotely. There is a severe disconnect between the Chicago office and the wind, solar, storage sites employees. It is almost impossible to participate in company events or affiliate groups if not in Chicago and those off-site are really not even thought about in regards to participation. Starting pay is low, many are over-worked and under appreciated. There is also rampant harassment and a pervasive "good ol boy" system in place throughout the non Chicago locations. It feels impossible to ever get ahead or to be listened to if you have valuable insight to share. 

For over four years only one person left for another job. Then we got new Plant/Ops managers and within 2 years almost every single employee had left that was there when I started. Management is confrontational and does everything possible to make people miserable. Favoritism is a huge problem. Hard work is not rewarded since management won't see it since they sit in their offices staring at spreadsheets. Then they assume who is good at their job based on who they like personally.

The best thing I can say about corporate is that most of the time they ignore the sites. When they do start to pay attention it is never good. They don't often manage, but when they do it is always to micromanage.

The pay here is good, but multiple people who worked here took other jobs making >50k less just to get away. Working at a job where you are miserable takes years off your life. It's just not worth it.

Started in 2021, was not well trained to begin with. Many technicians hired after me, also were not trained and sent off to lead their own crews. Due to prior wind experience, I was able to pick up what needed to be done quickly, but had to train 10 people over the phone. Manager relatively down to earth at site level, but had some issues seeing things from the techs point of view at times, causing people to feel overworked and overwhelmed quite often. HR is EXTREMELY PROGRESSIVE.


Travel techs are generally great people to work with and willing to teach you everything they know, some of the smartest technical minds in wind. Travel pays a $2 premium over the normal hourly rate.

For the most part, had a great time with the company and loved the work, if you can avoid HR you'll be absolutely GOLDEN.

Step learning curve as this job requires you not only to understand how to remotely troubleshoot wind turbines and solar panels but you also have to have a strong understanding of NERC compliance standards, network troubleshooting and market pricing. The operations management team is excellent. They understand that they are asking a lot of their operators/schedulers and are more than willing to go over concepts with you. Coworkers are great and more than willing to help you during high stress periods. The schedule is the worst part of this job but you never work more than 4 days in a row and every 5 weeks you get a 7 day stretch off. Due to necessary NERC compliance standards, the operations teams are isolated from the rest of the company which can make it difficult to network with people outside of your department. 

Renewable Energy was a learning experience that will remain with me the rest of my life, so much so, that when I speak of the industry and the knowledge I obtained, most people ask if I am an Engineer, to which I reply, "by osmosis".  The culture was phenomenal at the start.  The exponential growth in the short period of time turned the culture to more of a stringent "corporate" structure rather than a "entrepreneurial" feel of a start-up, where ownership of your position was something to admire.  To which, both are positive aspects of the company, but clearly a choice to make as a member of staff.

Enjoyed working at STEC, had an awesome working environment, great co-workers, and an easy going learning environment. Loved being pretty autonomous and having a laid back work schedule. Never once was asked to do anything I had never done or wasn't willing to do myself. Had a great mentorship program and enjoyed being paired up with the two most senior Techs on site. Pay and benefits were great. The promotion system was very easy and straightforward, potential for growth within the company was exceptional. Overall an awesome experience and one I will hold all my future employers in comparision to.

My job was relaxing in a non-micro managing environment.   I was always busy which I loved because I don't like sitting at my desk being bored.  It was nice to learn about renewable energy.  I had to get use to working for a private company since I came from  corporate company so I guess that was the hardest part of the job for me.  What I enjoyed the most about my position was working with  the landowners and listening to their stories.

A typical day of work includes opening mail, sending back packages, running errands around Chicago, researching activities for the family.

My direct manager is "too busy" to train me and as a result I feel neglected and not a part of the team.

The hardest part of my job is constantly looking for specific projects to work on from my direct manager. I like to keep busy and use my time effectively, but it is hard when I have to ask for things to do every day.

The most enjoyable part of my job is the work/life balance and the consistent pay checks.
