When I started at Brookdale I was very excited because the company had good benefits and the potential for very good pay was there, however it was based on points per visit, admission , etc... I went from fighting for enough points to completely overworked . I was always working after hours and every weekend that i was supposed to be off to catch up on work from the week. I received no real orientation and was expected to complete work that I was unfamiliar with ( OASIS, admits, recerts, etc..... ) within a 24 hour time period. On call for nurses consists of an entire week every 4 weeks after working full days. Management was very poor and the office was the most unwelcoming environment i have ever experienced in over 16 years of being an RN. There were numerous important emails that were not sent to me regarding pay and mileage which I do not believe was an oversight. Patients are not truly case managed , nurses are just thrown to different people every day and clinicians do not control their own schedule which never works in a clinical and case managing position . This was the most disappointing company I have ever encounterd.

Only positive is coworkers. Nurse to patient ratio's are unsafe for both patients and your RN license. Nurses with years vested stay because they keep hoping it will get better. Unit is mostly staffed with travel nurses. Management is not supportive in growth and often plays favorites. CNO comes off aggressive and condescending, so don't expect much other than to be told you are not doing enough. Overtime is forced. Calls, texts, notifications are 24/7 requsting for staff to come in because staffing is so poor. Vacation time is not approved if they don't have enough staff to cover the unit.  Pay for long term employees is lower than new hires. Annual raise is a joke, especially since insurance went up this year more than the small annual raise. This is a for profit hospital and they are pocketing billions without a care to core staff. 

The RN is overworked and put in the position of feeling like they have no choice but to take on responsibilities given even if unsafe or unrealistic. I left work late most days, was stretched on staffing most days and saw the entire unit turn over while our floor struggled to find new nurses to fill in the roles. We were forced to take on more patients than our suggested ratio's most days. Leadership was unsupportive and saw the negative staff attitudes as the problem as opposed to the staffing crisis and stress levels from the toxic work environment,

What is the best part of working at the company?
We all work together to get the job done. We have a good team so it helps if any of us need help with anything. Everyone is so helpful & we support one another!!! 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The first few weeks of learning diffrent aspects of the job but after that you can just roll with it. It really does get easier every day.

We hire diffrent people from all backgrounds & culture so we are diverse here & I love that 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
I come in break down our truck order, deliver to all the machines I have, lunch, fill my controls, another delivery clean up!!

I would do a numerous amount of things because I was a 'volunteer', so this was not a job that was payed for. I did all of the work that I did there at that hospital because of my kind spirit. I would take magazines to patients, along with flowers, work in the emergency room admitting patients, filing paperwork, helped with transport of wheel chaired patients, and etc. I learned that you don't really know how lucky you are until you are in some of the people's positions that I saw while I volunteered there. I learned that I want to help people because it makes me happy to make someone else happy at the end of the day. 

Though the patients and fellow nurses and CNAs are great to work with,  management leaves a lot to be desired.  It's always about the bottom line cost and they can't ever staff us to what the ratio says. I would say out of a month of shifts we would be staffed exactly as we should be about 3 to 5 times.  Days is worse staffed than nights at times.  We have been hearing for almost 2 years how we are going to increase staffing, "we're hiring this many nurses or techs" but the floors don't get better, because by the time they hire 1 staff, 2 people have left.  

This will sound like a backhanded review, I love working here and I love my coworkers and the patients. I love my job and being a nurse, but management and the ratios make it impossible to provide safe care. The ratio is not 1:4, more like 1:6+. Staff doesn’t stay, the turnover is ridiculous. New hires, new grads leave within a year. Management gaslights you, bullies you and expects you to move mountains (and when you do, you don’t get praise for it), then you get written up for small mistakes because you had 7 patients and can only do so much. Management is hostile, the lead staff, other staff and travelers have been amazing. I enjoy working here, but watch your back with management, they do not care about you. 

The unit I worked on was fast paced and challenging.  I enjoyed working on the unit because the nurses were wonderful and helpful, but most of the time we were short staffed.  Thats where good teamwork came in!  We all helped each other.  I enjoyed my job there becuase we had the patients longer and I was able to get to know them better, and watch them make progress,  That was very rewarding.  We had weekly conferences with the MDs, therapists, nursing and social workers and I found the meeting frustrating becuase of the needs of the patients and the insurances were a tough match.  Sometimes patients were unable to get what they really needed upon discharge.

You need support from a manager? Good luck finding one. You need answer for an an important question that is pivotal to patient care? Call another unit. The best thing about this unit is the teamwork amongst the staff. This is why, I believe most people have stayed as long as they do. Otherwise the turnover rate is laughable. 
Oh, if you do want to find a manager or support staff member, then do something that is not exactly as it is written in the handbook. Then magically she/he will appear. 
Maybe all jobs are like this. I wanted to make a career out of working this unit. I LOVED this job at first. So sad. 

Working for HCA and at Johnston-Willis Medical Center has been a very fulfilling and rewarding experience for me. I'm a very caring person of my fellow man, especially when they are in urgent need of emergency care and this job has helped me achieve this passion. But now that I'm 61 years of age, I'm looking forward to that next chapter in my life. I'm not yet ready for full retirement yet, so I'm exploring the opportunities of jobs online so I can continue to work from home.
