The most miserable three weeks of my life. A typical day at work starts with you coming in any time before your shift (ideally) being crammed into the smallest break room slash cleaning room. No type of room to place every sales person's belongings. While the managers have their own separate room where it's spacious and has lockers. You go into the managers' break room and grab your walkie and earpiece. 
Then you're on your shift, "on the floor". You cannot stand still for 10 seconds to catch a break without a manager humiliating you through the earpiece. You must constantly be walking around, fixing a shoe or something simply so people think we're being productive. Despite 90% of the customers being from out of the country. 
Now a customer comes in and you must be in their face asking personal questions to see what they like so you can have an idea of what to bring. Now the managers want you to bring the shoe they asked for plus 2 shoes they didn't ask for but you should suggest, 5 pairs of socks: 3 by journeys and 2 name brands, one piece of clothing that matches or is of the same brand and a sneaker cleaner. And it all must be swiftly done in one round. Insane? I know.  
Okay yay the foreigner has no idea that they're being conned, so they buy two pairs of socks and a matching brand item. But 90% of the time they only take the shoe that they walked into the store wanting, now you must put all of these items back while there's two managers harassing your earpiece about being in the front engaging with the customers. Now you're back in the front asking 50 customers why they wear that shoe brand and following them for 20 mins just for them to walk out and you losing that sale (I'll get into that later).
Fast forward, now we're closing. The slick employees and managers leave the sweeping and mopping to the newbies. The slick employees take their time making sure the positions of each sneaker is perfect; a job that probably takes 10 minutes at its slowest. Then they spend all the remaining time playing music while talking about people while the newbies do the real work. Then they close and check everyone's bags and belongings which is about the only weird thing they do that I understand. 
What I've learned is that Journeys is a very rigorous job that underpays for the work they give. It's a really horrible job and only apply if you're extremely desperate in the summer. It was only bearable because of SOME co-workers.
Management is a joke. They make sure to have everybody feeling very replaceable which is a very disrespectful thing to do. They only take their job serious when the district manager is there which is almost never. 99% of the time they're just playing favoritism with the employees. They only implement Always Be Closing when the DM is there. The store manager, also a joke. He works like 3 days a week and never past 8PM. I only met him once and that was when he hired me. The minute you're hired you can see who their favorites are. There are some good managers but they get penalized into becoming rude managers.
The workplace culture was absolutely the worst. Everyone had a ridiculously high number of sales to complete to beat out the previous year's numbers. So when a big family came in every single worker swarmed to them because everyone knew they would achieve their goals through this. There was no friendliness, the slick employees would take the huge sales and leave you with those buying one pair of kids shoes which would contribute nothing to your goal. And the managers would always back them up. Some of my co-workers along with myself eventually stopped the unnecessary competitiveness and simply engaged with the customers rather than trying to get them to buy half the store. You always felt, suffocated and harassed all the time. You'd have a 9 hour shift and these managers had the audacity to give only 30 minute breaks. As if I'm a slave or some kind of joke.
Hardest part of the job is everything; competitiveness, arrogance, disrespect, 30 minute breaks, 8+ hour shifts, favoritism, lack of team work. The joke of a 40% off discount with a limit of $50 per month. The discounts never added up to 40% and once the discount hits the $50 limit, you must pay full price.
There was nothing to enjoy about that job except hiding in the bathroom crying because you want to quit. Which I eventually did after three weeks and my parents making me realize I was slaving in that job. 0/5 recommend this job. If you are in serious desperate need of a job and have no other choice besides stripping or drug dealing then I'll recommend this job.

A typical day at Journeys is generally easy tasks. The company is a minimalistic company. I'd like to think that based on retail and merchandising practices, we practice to be a low operating costs company. Many of the operational tasks are performed in the morning, as a Co-Manager (Assistant Manager): refund exchange verification, SOS Orders, Payroll Tasks. The operational tasks can take anywhere between 1 hour to 1 hour and 30 minutes depending on the volume of sales and business flow.

After operations are completed at the beginning of day, the remainder of the day is focused on "sales." We have our 6 selling behaviors, its like a mandatory sales process and policy, that includes "4 to the Floor" where we must bring a minimum of 4 pairs of shoes to present to the customer. We have to do this for each customer. "Four to the Floor" can be challenging, as a Sales Associate, because we are thinking about how the customer will respond. However, the best strategy is to stay positive, remain positive, and have a mindset that the worst thing the customer can say is "No."

I have learned a lot of operational tasks that help our company and my store perform well because we are able to keep up with our valuable inventory, the shoes our customers love to purchase. I am still learning to be a good Sales Associate. People do not always like or agree with Sales Practices because we are driving sales, or increasing company revenue by trying to persuade customers to purchase and purchase more too. We do our best to make a large, quality sale each time customers come into the store.

Journeys is a smart company and I believe they set a standard of excellence for the company. Our corporate management can be really strict and adamant about following work policies - terminating employees if they don't do a good job of following standards; and performing the 6 sales behaviors, for store employees.
Management is great but I think there should be more micromanaging in our company to keep standards upheld, sales increase, and a focused environment. Sometimes our environment can feel "too chill."

Management is great. I've only ever had contact with two managers, my Store Manager and District Manager. Management sets the tone for our employees and company. At my store, I feel as though we are good at operations (back office tasks) but we could be more uniformed on our Sales Behaviors to drive sales. For example, we should work on metrics such as - sock sales, accessory sales, non-shoe product sales.

Our Workplace Culture is focused on authenticity, personality, and expression. While we are professional we have an accepting, unique, expressive, and a stand-out work culture. Journeys seem to attract peculiar and talented people. It's a fun, exciting work culture. 

The most enjoyable part of my job is the ease of work. We have our daily responsibilities, but it's not very overwhelming. We have an awesome of group of associates in our store. And I am learning to be a better communicator and sales person. It's valuable and life-changing to gain this experience.

The most challenging part of my job is sales. We have highs and lows in our pay structure. You can provide awesome sales support and customer service to your customers to increase and drive sales. We are always looking for opportunities for a new sale and an increase in sale opportunities. I've worked for Journey's for less than 2 months and I made $4K for the month of December. That's an example of the drive of our sales in December.

We have a great and unique pay structure. You are really able to see the performance of the company and your personal store based on the way we are paid. If we put in the team effort, we have an opportunity to be really profitable.

Journey’s is a really awesome place to work, it just takes a certain kind of person to want to work there. It is not your average retail job. It’s a competitive, preformance based, commission sales environment that requires people who can multitask, move quickly, and build fast connections with the customers that walk through the door. Many people are not motivated enough for this type of environment and, therefore, end up being dissatisfied with their pay because it is commission. 

There are decent incentives for MITs and management such as bonus, holiday pay, manager of the year awards, trips to Mexico and Nashville (where the home office is) for a huge week long party, and commission that you make off the store. Every person who is a part of the management team has a ton of control over their pay check, within reason of the season. What I mean is, that just as awesome as people’s checks are during holiday, they can be equally as disappointing during normal business if you are not sales driven in all aspects of the term.

Many people who work for journey’s are dissatisfied with the pay, but many of these people don’t actually understand how the pay works i.e. how overtime is calculated. 

All that being said, journey’s DOES need to be just a bit more competitive with its base pay as far as co managers and store managers are concerned if they want to keep good employees and continue finding good ones. If journey’s raises it just a bit more it would make a huge difference in my opinion. Overall though, the whole pay structure is pretty balanced when you understand that some checks you’ll end up making 20 dollars an hour and others you’ll only make 13, even as a store manager. It’s the nature of the game.

Journey’s by far has the best culture of any retail job I’ve ever worked. It’s a very open and fun environment that allows so much room for growth and advancement for employees who express the desire to advance and learn. The company will work with you to get you where you want to be within the company whether it’s to being a DM or to home office being a buyer, journeys will help you and do it quickly. It’s a very tight knit team/company. Each store manager has the ability to work directly with buyers, merchandisers, LP managers, facilities managers, social media ambassadors and so on and so forth in order to ask them questions and improve their business. Need more of a particular shoe that you aren’t modeled to get? Call the buyers and tell them that it would benefit you and the company to have that shoe in your store. Do you think you could be a good social media outlet for the company? Partner with the social media team and see if they agree. Have any questions about policies, LP, or anything? There is a huge list of names that you can sift through and call. The best part? Everyone you call will call you back and help you!!

You do put in a lot of hours if you are a part of management, which makes the family/work balance difficult at times, but you are allowed two days off a week as long as you still have 40 selling hours which equates to about 45-50 hour work weeks in total. How these hours are reached are up to the manager of the store or the DM or both.

The discount is great, the health insurance is great and affordable, and you do accumulate PTO. 

All in all, if you have the drive to develop a good team that will drive sales for you (store managers get commission off the store as well as their own personal commission), have the motivation to drive you own sales, have the energy to work long work weeks, enjoy people and helping them figure out exactly what they want, and don’t mine the rise and fall of the pay checks since it is commission, then journey’s would be a great place for you.

Where do I even begin? I started at Journeys in Boise, ID as a part time sales associate. I worked very hard and quickly moved up to Sales Lead, then Co-Manager, then MIT. For someone with no management experience this was very exciting. But, I ignored the warning signs and all I'm going to say is I shouldn't have. At the store I started at I had to work under the worst manager I have ever met in my life thus far. But that still wasn't enough for me to quit because I knew I was better than that and that I had what it took to run my own store. I wasn't going to let my manager ruin my chances at running my own store. I put up with the antics for a very long time. A typical week for me looked like getting texted/called on my days off with pictures of the smallest little thing I missed like forgetting to straighten one shoe after close, or not leaving the cleaning supplies completely organized. I was told constantly that I had horrible communication skills when the real person who had horrible communication skills was my store manager. And much much much more... Throughout my time at my first store I reached out to upper management multiple times because of the environment I was expected to work in. But nothing changed, and nothing ever will change because apparently all of the stuff I had to deal with could be written off as their "management style." Anyways, besides all the times I was set up to fail by my mentor I stuck with it and then one day I was told I was going to run my own store. Yeah, let me say that again, I was told, not asked. And I was told by my store manager because my District Manager couldn't even have the time to call me for 5 minutes and offer me the position themselves. I wasn't even told what I was going to be paid, I had to ask for that. I was told that when I moved stores that everyone at the new store was going to quit. But there was no real plan in place for when that was going to happen. Long story short, yes everyone quit and I was expected to work open to close every day without any days off. It wasn't until my 16th day working open to close in a row (10-11 hour shifts; and I was lucky if I got to take a break) that I said this isn't worth it and I quit. And most people reading this will think "Oh he didn't have what it takes." No I most definitely had what it took. Those 16 plus days I was working in a row my store was cranking out numbers that that store hadn't seen in literal years. But, I was so under valued that it didn't seem important for anyone to help me, even though I was a brand new store manager literally holding my store up on my back. I lost 30 pounds in a month because of how stressed I was, and I expressed my concerns to my District Manager and they said that this was my job. I met and exceeded all expectations even in the worst of situations, but I still wasn't valued enough as an employee to get help. The one time my DM actually came to help they stayed in Boise for a total of 4 hours and only one of those hours they were in my store. And the best they could say was "You look tired." Yeah I am tired I'm working 70 hours a week without any days off, so yeah I am tired thank you for pointing that out. I tried reaching out to HR to hopefully figure out how I could get some help, not to get anyone in trouble but simply to ask for help and I was told there was nothing they could do. And all of this barely scratches the surface. I'm not one to bash employers but this was an exceptionally horrible experience. And I urge you to think twice before applying to work at Journeys. The only good thing to come out of this are the cool shoes I bought with my discount. So if being under appreciated, over worked to the point where your physical health is deteriorating, and being set up to fail over and over sounds worth the shoe discount then go ahead and apply! 

As far as managing goes, management is extremely poor regarding to professionalism, and especially when it comes to the needs of their employees such as safety and respect. My workplace has been around for more than 5 years and the owner continues to refuse security cameras due to the excuse of "the price being too expensive," and yet merchandise continues to get stolen and when it does, the solution is to place security alarms on them...when we have no alarms to go off if someone attempts to steal it. Talk about convenient, when it comes to someone getting a five-finger discount at least. For the employees, somehow it becomes our fault and we should have been "paying closer attention." 

On another note, professionalism is a major problem for such a busy and personal business like Journeys, or at least the one in Williamsburg. A workplace that allows their managers to leave when they please to have a conversation and walk around with their friends and significant others while their employees, where there may only be one or two occupying a busy store at a time, are left inside to deal with two or five customers at once, is the bottom of the barrel kind of job. Not only that, but apparently employees can smoke, vape, cuss, rough house, and treat each other however they like, around customers, with no consequences whatsoever. You're free to wear whatever you like as an employee, even if that means wearing nothing. The only dress code policy they have is the one where you have to wear footwear branded only by the types displayed in the store. But if you feel like coming to work wearing just a thong and pasties on your chest, by all means. A relaxed dress code is convenient and pleasant, but how relaxed do people feel the need to be?

Managers are the ones you should count on to take charge of important tasks and requests that require someone of a more advanced position to help you complete it or to handle it themselves. Now imagine how stressful that can be when your managers are lazy, negative, constantly have an attitude, rude, bad-mouths their employees, and just overall hard to work with unless their own personal life is in order and unless they've had 40 ounces of Starbucks iced coffee in them that morning. It's to the point where you can only guarantee you'll have a pleasant shift only if your manager is in a good mood, which is close to never. Asking for a break is pretty simple, as long as your shift that day is at least five hours, and that means you can be working 8-10 hours with only one 30 minute break throughout. 

The only pros I can see from this job are the diversity, demand, and the commission pay, as well as the 40% discounts. Yet, even you get a limit with the amount of discounts you're allowed to use because the owner is just that cheap.

Long story short, working at Journeys may seem all fun and games at first, but you'll see it for what it really is give it a month or two. No one that gets the job ever has the intention of staying long-term, and everyone who does becomes a negative burden to work with and acts like they don't care about anything. The job wasn't worth it to me, not for $7.25/hour when I was told $9 at the interview and not when my hours got cut to two days a week, 3-4 hours a shift. The workplace may seem chill and fun, but the people who are in charge are the mot toxic people ever.

For a first time job, it is great. Pay is low, hours are inconsistent, but that never mattered to me as a high schooler. The workload is simple, and you get a pretty good discount. Once you get into levels of Management, the job turns into a dumpster fire. 

Hours/Pay
- Store Managers/Co Managers  are required to work 45 Hours per week (Non-Peak = 5 Days on, 2 Days off) and 50 Hours per week (Peak/Holiday = 6 Days on, 1 Day off)—45/50 is expected to be the amount AFTER all of your breaks for your shifts have been taken. 
- Pay for management is structured as a salary so they give you a guaranteed weekly pay. That guarantee is structured off of three factors: Base Pay ($300 for Store Managers, $200 for Co/Managers) + 4% Personal Commission (Same percentage for SM and Cos) + Store Commission (0.95% for SM and 0.9% for Cos). If those three variables did not amount to your guarantee, you got a “Make Up to Guarantee” added to your paystub. Essentially, if your guarantee was $520/week (aka the guarantee of a Co-Manager), you would never make less than that, but could always make more—through increasing your personal sales/store sales. The thing to keep in mind with the guarantee, that number is pre-taxed ($520 guarantee looked more like $480 after taxes for 45 hours of work). 

Using PTO/Sick Hours 
- PTO was pretty straight forward and easy to submit. Like most retailers, Journeys functions on a Black Out Calendar, so as long as your PTO didn’t fall in Black out, you were solid. 
- Utilizing sick hours was a NIGHTMARE. You could not be sick, and if you were sick you better hope that it was sick enough to miss 3 days of work. For you to use your sick hours, you had to be under 30 hours worked or it would not get approved by the District Manager or Regional Manager. This means, that missing one day would leave you with 36 scheduled hours and you could not submit sick hours. The contradiction to this is you would get in trouble for being under 40 Hours. So for you to be sick, you either had to callout most of the week or miss a day and work open-close the rest of the week to get back up to the expected worked hours of 45. 

Journeys Culture
- Ride or Die is the easiest way to put it. The company runs off of a set of Core Values, but at their core they are a “Family with an Attitude that Cares.” That attitude only cares while you are aligned with the company. The instant you introduce any sort of contradiction (ex. hey dm my pay is so bad i cannot afford my rent is there anything u can do to help because i really don’t want to leave and you force me to work so many hours that i cannot work a second job.) that attitude shifts to kick you out of the company. That shift will start slow, you’ll get the demotion talk. If you accept a demotion to open up your availability to a second job, you will start to be scheduled less and less until you 1. quit because lack of hours or 2. they don’t schedule you for a month straight so you are auto terminated out of the system. This behavior is highly encouraged to Store Managers by District Managers for employees who fall out of alignment with the company. 


The greatest part about working for this company is the attitudes and personalities of the people that work there. Journeys employees are perhaps the most laid-back and personable folks you'll meet. Sadly, this fact is immediately overshadowed by the fact that leadership and efficiency is lacking in almost every way. Any concerns I've ever had about ensuring the store is operating at its best was routinely deflected and most pertinent conversations have resulted in management politically 'pivoting' away from the issue with some unrelated store procedure followed by some fatalistic quip (e.g. 'it is what it is').
Another HUGE letdown is the pay, which is commission-based and relies entirely on customer traffic; a fact that they never tell you when they hire you to work there. For example, in my first month I sold more than $30K in merchandise during an off-peak season, averaging about $189 in sales per hour (a feat that managers don't even accomplish in most places), but still only made minimum wage once you put my numbers through the company formula for commission pay. Also, once you consider the fact that managers get 95% of the allotted sales hours (not an exaggeration, an actual fact), the likelihood of a part time associate making any reasonable pay for 10 of the 12 months of the year is minimal. Being a co-manager does nothing but give you full-time hours and one day off per week, but still pays very little, and during slow weeks it pays less than minimum wage.
The employee discount also leaves much to be desired. The rate is decent (40%), but then they tell you that you're only allowed $50 of discount savings per month... a $45 pair of shoes ends up being $27, but then you can only buy 2 pairs of shoes at the discounted rate for the remainder of the month.
Last, the work environment is counter-intuitive. They encourage teamwork but then create a cut-throat sales environment where co-workers throw each other under the bus for sales. Managers made a habit of shirking their responsibilities regarding store operations and pawning it off on part time employees, saying that we had to "earn our time on the sales floor," as if only scheduling part-time employees 4-10 hours per week wasn't enough of a penance. There is also a requirement to maintain certain ratios of merchandise sales (called SOP's) with absolutely no incentive to do so other than keeping your job - i.e., if you sell $100 in shoes, you must also sell $1 in socks, $10 in accessories, and $25 of your sales have to be on a purchase that included more than one pair of shoes (multiples). Failure to do so, or to 'nepotistically' earn the favor of whoever your store manager happens to be, effects the number of hours you get.

Ultimately, this is a job for a college student that want beer or junk food money, or a high school student looking for a little extra cash and access to cool shoes at a cheap price. If you have real bills, I HIGHLY encourage you to look elsewhere for work, because this isn't worth it.

I enjoyed working at Underground by Journeys than I have at any other job I've ever had. My manager was, in my opinion the best manager in the world. He was caring but not to sensitive, hilarious but always professional and we always had the best conversations about life or decisions that we had to make. My coworkers were the same way. I always got rides home after work if it was late and they didn't want me taking the bus and we got along so well. They were communicable and interesting. We never fought over customers and always had great conversations while cleaning up the store and making sure that everything was in order. A typical day at work for me started at around 4pm and I'd come in and be greeted with smiles. The first thing I'd do after I put my stuff away in the back would be to go out and check the displays. After making sure that all the shoes, shirts and book bags were stocked and straight I would check the floor for dirt. If all that was done then I'd await the incoming customers but keep myself busy by visiting the stock room every couple minutes. I would check the number on a shoe and test myself on time by going to the stock room and finding the shoe as quickly as I could, pretending there was a customer in order to quicken my service time. If me and my coworkers weren't busy we would converse in some great conversations with our manager. Customers would come in and I would assist them by either bringing them exactly what they wanted or suggesting similar items to what they were looking for, then ringing them up. At the end of the day, a couple minutes before we closed the store I would begin sweeping the floors in the front of the store and the back. After closing the gate I would pull in the displays and check to make sure everything was stocked again and in place. Finally I would begin mopping the floor while my coworker or manager counted the registers. When all that was done we would deposit the money and take out the trash and head out. The hardest part of my day was taking out the trash at night, only because it was dark and we were behind the mall so it was a little unnerving. My job was amazing all day long and the most enjoyable part of my day came when customers would come in and I was able to assist, suggest and give them my personal opinion in order to help them make the right decision. Conversing with the people in the mall was fun and it gave me a chance to interact on a more personal level with them than if I would have just walked up to them. Overall this was an amazing job, mostly because of my manager, coworkers and the ability to communicate on a daily basis.

Journeys was my most favorite job. Its a great upbeat environment, very high expectations as far as sales but its motivating since it is a commission based job. You can be yourself, wear what you want (besides a minor minor minor dress code policy) piercings, tattoos, crazy hair, Journeys is very cultured and unique, our District Manager has a full sleeve. 

The only con as far as working in management, you must work a minimum of 45 hours, you may get 2 days off a week 1 sometimes, and the pay is not the best. You get overtime after 40, but MUST work 45 at least, which is a good thing. Commission is 4% of sales. I worked in a high volume store (aka busy mall) and would still only take home about 600-650 after taxes, maybe about 720 before... every two weeks. 

Lets do math, you get a set base pay, which is a terrible $125-$150 every week, the amount depends on experience, then everything else is left up to you and what you make in commission. After accumulating at least 90 hours per pay period, AND being an EXPERIENCED manager, I was making about $720/90hrs = $8/hr which is nothing. Keep in mind commission based jobs are only good if the percentage you get is high OR if you're only working during very busy seasons like Holidays or Back to School. Other than the pay I loved my coworkers, I loved the company, and I loved working there. 

Typical day at work: come in at 9 to set up for opening, gather shoes that may need to be transferred to other stores or shipped out to customers. Receive shipment of about 50-70 boxes (the amount depends on how high or low of a volume store you're in). 70 boxes is about 300 shoes!! Shifting and moving shoes around in the stockroom to fit the new ones in (they have to stay in a certain order). Selling to customers, you must sell! SOPs are Standards of Performance and can make or break you. You must sell a certain amount of socks, accessories (book bags, tshirts, cleaners, shoe strings, sunglasses, etc.) and multiples (selling more than one shoe to a single customer). Its all a ratio, so if you sell 3 packs of socks but you sale 30 pairs a shoes, your percentage for socks will be a h*ll no. People lose their jobs over this stuff but it was never hard for me to exceed my SOPs. 

Also, its very easy to move up. If you show and prove with responsibility, punctuality, and of course your sales, your manager will put a bug in your DM's (District Manager) ear, and you'll be offered a promotion in no time trust me. 

oh, and the sales associates who worked under me barely got any hours, maybe 12 is the most i've seen during a regular week. Hours pickup during busy seasons of course, but when its summer or schools in or if there are no holidays approaching, most days only managers work the entire day. 

Lovely company, a lot of work, very fun, low pay.

A typical day at work was SALES! Selling is number one here. Depending on the support and respect of senior management, there are opportunities to be promoted. I was a successful sales person as a co-manager, proving to increase sales in the store i worked at while waiting to be promoted to manager as mine was on maternity leave, she gained the profit on my hard work. Her arrival back granted me a promotion to the highest volume store in my district. I chose to relocate for the opportunity because the district manager notoriously stopped offering promotion if you turned it down the first time. The store in Indiana I was promoted to had multiple managers cycle through and a history of internal theft that was not addressed by the district manager at the time. Upon bringing it to his attention, he turned a blind eye and offered no support. I rarely got support visits after taking over a large store with inherited major issues. I became unhappy having relocated for a job that wasn't at all what it was supposed to be. In the 1.5 years I was with the company I was quickly promoted but not on a proper foundation. Because of the fast track to upper management, I am certain plenty of great employees fall through the cracks because of the upper managements lack of investment.

My relationship with my district manager from the beginning was based purely on what I could offer him. I offered him sales increase (more money in his paycheck) as well as the ability to keep a store running when his pet manager was on leave. My store manager and I had a great relationship until she gained the title of district manager in training. In trying to utilize their feedback to develop my management skills in a store that was meant to be run by someone with GREATER skills than I considering its problematic history, I experienced abusive conversations where I was sworn at and belittled.

My experience was bittersweet, I feel that anyones experience would certainly be based purely on the values and integrity of the people that hold the future of said person in their hand. If a district manager does not offer support directly after promotion into a new, much larger position, consider another opportunity. If your voice isn't heard, it may be time to move on.
