     When I began with Key,  I was excited to have steady hours after leaving a place with  continuous uncertainty.  I enjoyed having a flexible schedule but didn't like driving 45 minutes to some client homes.  All but one of my BCBA's was helpful and seemed to care about open and honest communication between professionals. They don't care about the RBT's and it shows by how they engage in one-sided conversations and railroad you into a decision that's already been made.  There are a lot of younger people in positions of power and they don't know how to handle it and can treat someone older with more hands on experience like they're dumb because they're in positions above them. One BCBA in particular, is definitely in need of help in the area of how to respond to an RBT when there's a difference in opinion.  The compensation is OK but could be better. The owners try to make time for the company to come together since we rarely get to see another coworker outside of team meetings or training. I  left the company with only 14 hours a week and a rude male BCBA who twisted my words and work ethic to make it seem as though I was incompetent.  

Key cares about making BCBAs, but do not invest in retaining RBTs long-term. The pay is much lower across the board, compared to other ABA companies in the region. You’re going to be driving 30 minutes from client to client regularly, with no guaranteed lunch or rest breaks. Driving time between clients is considered break time, even if it isn’t even enough time to stop for a bathroom break. Culture here is mixed. For clinicians, you’re going to get minimal oversight and a pat on the back. For RBTs and Lead RBTs, you’re treated decently as long as you’re making them money. There is no work life balance if you’re a salaried employee. There can be a lot of talking behind your back and that can lead to a negative experience with your supervisors and coworkers. The company does conduct some CEUs, will pay for licensing fees, and does offer two weeks of PTO that starts accruing after 6 months. You get major holidays like Christmas off and insurance benefits are decent. You can bonus as a clinician and lead RBT, but they’re very difficult to earn. 

Pros: The kids are fun to work with and they the job is such meaningful work! You gain exposure to kids of different support levels, and they’re typically excited to see you when you arrive! All the BCBAs (supervisors) at KBS are amazing staff that are there to support you and help you grow as an RBT! PTO accrual is available along with other benefits and compensation is generally fair with pay raises every 6 months - 1 year. Company is flexible with time off as long notice is given in advance. 

Cons: The population you work with can result in long, stressful days if the kids are having a bad day (tantrums, not wanting to work, challenging behaviors). It’s easy to become overwhelmed, especially during the first few months. Being communicative with your BCBA if/when sessions are becoming difficult will help in terms of support, as well as  establishing a routine for yourself outside of work, avoiding bringing work home, and having an outlet. 

There is a relatively strict attendance policy with a point roll off system. Request off ideally 2 weeks in advance and avoid calling off. 

While working in the field of ABA can be quite rewarding, it is delicate work that requires high levels of organization, tact, patience, empathy, and training. Turnover is very high. Little of the training I received through the BACB’s  RBT credentialing process is applied in practice. Meeting the minimum requirements for billing purposes and credential retention very much seems to be the goal at Key. 

For the level of care and professionalism this line of work requires, wages could be much better than market minimum. The same could be said for hands on training and development. The company is simply too understaffed and lacks the coverage to provide hands on ‘real world’ training and development. 

Tip : Do not accept clients you do not have the staff for just to have those new to the industry fill the gaps on complex cases with minimal hands on or ‘real world’ training. This is a disservice to clients and other stakeholders. 

Cut back, train, pay, grow. 

I worked here for over a year and it was an awesome experience that taught me so much. I was the “float” which was a great position (being anywhere I was needed and not a repetitive schedule). Only thing I would really “complain” about is that creativity and power of ideas towards RBTs could be more out spoken and also corporate not letting you be more comfortable with families (can’t even ask for water unless it’s an emergency). Sessions are 3-4 hours long which sometimes felt really long and not beneficial the clients. Co workers were always great and BCBAs were knowledgeable and easy to go to! I’ll never forget this experience and it helped me with my career I have now. I miss my families and kiddos! Always will love my peopl! 

Some BCBAs were not as supportive as others, but that is anywhere you go. BCBAs/RBTs can be cliquey, but overall, it was a fantastic learning experience and a great introduction to the world of autism therapy (I started with ZERO experience!) The clients and their families made every day worth showing up! Some days are really hard, on top of not feeling like you're being listened to/supported by certain staff, the constant commute all over the place, and the burnout is tough. However, you really get to see the impact you made with all of the hard work and time invested, and it was the most fulfilling part —it makes it all worth it! :)))))

Culture was toxic, RBTs and BCBAs were cliquey, pay was low, company would take EVERY opportunity they could to not pay you (ie didn’t get paid hourly between jobs and gas compensation did not help at all). The training was subpar and thrown together quickly. The bcba training was you spending hours of your time repeating the same information you learn in your masters program over zoom. 

Key behavior cares very little about their employees’ well-being. In an already high-turnover field, they do nothing to try to help retain employees. There is very little upward movement and few monetary incentives to keep you there. You see very few coworkers due to being in home and are shadowed by BCBAs maybe once every two weeks. It’s a very stressful job and management doesn’t seem to care about your mental health. 

Key Behavior Services is a great starting job right out of college I was able to grow my career. I would recommend this company as they provide great services to the community that are fulfilling to work in. 

A wonderful team of genuine and compassionate people. Everyday I felt like I was important and a valued member and I loved the open door the owners have with everyone and if ever I had questions or wanted to learn more they were always so willing to help me learn and understand
