Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton

I worked in the Washington DC office and the Reston, Virginia office of Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton, and when I moved to North Carolina, I was happy to be able to join the Winston-Salem office.

As the workflow coordinator for the Litigation and Corporate, Finance and Real Estate departments, my day was very busy, ensuring that every project had the required coverage.  The culture at KTS was that of a firm with long term employees, most of the staff had worked there for 20 or more years.  It was a very close knit working group.  

The most rewarding part of my job was being able to do so much more than a Legal Secretary would normally do, as there was not enough Paralegal coverage.  I learned a lot at KTS and appreciate my time there.

I understand that the restructuring and lay-offs were a business decision, which affected me and several other people but nowadays, companies, law firms included have to make such decisions sometimes to stay at the top of their field.
 
I am looking forward to a new experience and cannot wait to start this chapter of my life.

My most frustrating thing is there was no real management in the trademark group.  There is definite cronyism and I think the firm lost its soul at least 5 years ago.  Employee morale extremely low.  The Human Resource high-ups need to pull their head out of the sand and actually be involved with the staff and be LEADERS.  Instead, they are completely unseen and just collect their checks.  Most great ppl leave the firm.  You also have employees that do nothing and brag about it and they never face any consequences.  Hard to watch if you have real work ethic.  I felt no one at the helm of the ship anymore.  

If you work in patent prosecution, there is a lot of variety.  Chances are good for expanding your skill set, because there is a lot of work to be done.  In this regard, I recommend keeping track of your accomplishments and asking for opportunities to do the kinds of things that interest you.  Managers don't always realize what your capabilities are unless you tell them.

The people are great to work with.  I worked with attorneys and staff across offices and most were reasonable, friendly and helpful.

Kilpatrick is a large international firm and it's very busy.  You may have to advocate for yourself if you need help balancing your workload.  



Fast-paced with great opportunities for learning and advancement. Organized systems and resources. Many are willing to take you under their wing and invest time to train, which is invaluable. Competitive like most IP firms. Careful! Too easy to get lost in work and become a taskmaster. Office Manager is considerate and does a great job hosting events and bringing people together to maintain a friendly culture. San Diego office is smaller - no one is a number. You'll either love that or hate that. Good people. The managing partner is great.

Typical Day at work:  Assuming prioritied have not changed than I resume with my planned tasks at the end of previous day before leaving the office.

What I learned a little bit at a time is about the how people around you think for me to understand there strengths and weaknesses. 

Workplace Culture: Always make efforts to make other peoples task better when necessary.  This in turn made my tasks easier.

The hardest part of the job: None
The most enjoyable part of the job:  All aspects of the job is enjoyable.  This guides your attitude in positive direction consistantly,

A typical day at work as Operations assistant consisted of ordering new supplies to keep inventory full. Assisting attorneys and other employees with procuring special items to complete certain tasks. Making sure the floors were clear and accessible and well lit. I would typically make a courthouse run in the early afternoon. I would help setup for staff luncheons almost everyday. Things usually slowed down around 430pm. I WAS OFF AT 6.

Worked as a contract attorney doing document review work for about 2 years. Before Covid most everyone went into the office, now most contract attorneys work remotely. It's a great job for someone just out of law school or maybe a semi retired or retired attorney who wants to stay active doing something. Pay is fair, but being a contract attorney the work is on a project by project basis so not the greatest employment security. Overall great place to work and very pleasant colleagues and management.

Lack of advancement and support in job role

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Marginalizing for non-attorneys. Very segregated by attorneys and non-attorney professionals 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
It varies because of the nature of the work.

This is a very hostile environment. Gossip from the manager to hr, petty games with the work, hidden agendas with the work and staff, favoritism if you are dressed appropriately for the only man in the office. Most are scared to speak up because they've been there for so long and are afraid to start over. This is one of the rudest, nastiest places, I have ever worked. Do not work for this firm. Go down the street to Alston & Bird instead. Its cleaner too.

What is the best part of working at the company?
As sr. paralegal I am able to give my opinion on various issues in a case or my insight as to trial and the attorney's presentation. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
As any company, there are deadlines to meet, which nay be a bit stressful.

We have a great work life balance.
