Kinsale Insurance Company

Awful company.  Toxic culture where who you know matters more than the quality of work that you do.  Kinsale has a ridiculous level of turnover- both voluntary and involuntary.  Continually hiring- more so because of turnover, rather than company growth, as they claim.  They won’t hesitate to terminate you with zero warning or valid justification. 

Management is petty and deceitful-  operating with their own personal agendas.  Little opportunity to grow and advance within the organization, unless you’re “in” with the right person. 

Very high school esque atmosphere with catty cliques and low level gossiping. Management doesn’t address the issue because they are part of the problem.  Pay is decent, benefits are subpar, morale is awful.  Adamant refusal from upper management to adapt to the changing times when it concerns working from home or offering hybrid work accommodations. Very archaic way of thinking when it comes to their operations, beliefs and core values. 

Kinsale Insurance has terrible reviews- within the insurance industry and on employment rating websites. Believe what you read, spare yourself the headache and look elsewhere. 

When people first start there everyone is very nice! You quickly learn that there is a pecking order and you better fall in line. Management uses the public humiliation technique and creates a toxic work place. Has his employees go out and get him his lunch so he doesn't have to. Training is a nightmare and if you try and point this out, you are then identified as trouble. It is common for employees to eat at their desks and work through their lunch hour. They profess work life balance but only the top of the top seem to have that. Morale is poor yet they won't acknowledge it. The health benefits are terrible yet they act like they are gold standard. It's a giant deductible that you can't meet with the HSA that they give you. You get PTO but are made to feel horrible if you take it. 

This company is like an Instagram page: all shiny and perfect on the outside, but a corrupted mess on the inside. They have very outdated views on their rules for running the company, yet they invest in all the new high technology building updates. They are constantly bringing in new hires, but will terminate you with no notice and for no reason. Their interviewing process is extremely grueling, especially when they plan on firing you anyway. The compensation is very good, but it's all a façade because they know you won't last. Management is a joke and puts on a front that they are all about community and teamwork, when in actuality they only care if you've got connections or if you're into gossip and in their clique. 

Immediately dropped into the job without being given a direct task or any training. The culture was very unsupportive of asking questions you'll often get looked down upon if you do. 
There is no work life balance, you are expected to take your work home with you after hours to finish. 
Training consisted of trivial games and underwriting q/a that didn't apply to software development at all.
You are judged by quantity of tickets completed in comparison to your peers rather than the quality and importance of each ticket.
Testing procedures are usually out of date or missing details.
Benefits are lack luster at best, especially the super high deductible health insurance.

They take care of you financially, better than their competitors for sure. A lot of PTO and opportunities to move up internally. However, depending on your manager, they will play favorites and if you are not one of them you can be singled out for the same things that the favorites do right in front of management. They say they value quote production but if you are too introverted and the wrong manager doesn't like you, you can be in for an annoying experience. They need to start having anonymous surveys for managers because there are people that took a job elsewhere because management didn't treat them the same as others. 

There's plenty of facetime with leadership because everyone is onsite Monday through Friday. 
Kinsale is highly profitable. The stock price is going up fast.  

Unfortunately, the tech stack is lacking.  There's no job security, and good performance reviews don't mean anything.  Blind side terminations are standard HR practice.  Kinsale is dependent on the Richmond job market, but management practices have profoundly eroded Kinsale's reputation with local talent.  Kinsale's anti associate, high churn practices will not scale.  It's just a fly by night, get rich quick company.

I would not recommend working here. If you are able to negotiate a decent salary for yourself, they will find a reason to lay you off. I had my “position eliminated” just weeks after a perfect evaluation from my manager. The experience had profound negative impacts on my life, and took years to recover from. The culture is terrible and they literally do not care if you have any work/life balance. There is constant after hours work and literally no job security. During my time there, I saw more people fired or laid off than fired. Terrible company to work for. 

The development team is small, and normally staffed with contractors who give fresh perspective on projects. The management team on the development side has slipped quite a bit with the loss of some key pieces, and prioritization is hard to come by. Things can be hectic on the job, but it's a 8:30-5 type of company. They want you to use your time off (and don't let you roll more than 5 days of it over each year).

Over the last few months the turnover at Kinsale has been weekly. Senior leadership refuses to compromise on a hybrid schedule. They are losing someone a week and unable to get claims examiners in the door due to not offering a hybrid schedule. The are hiring attorneys and attempting to turn them into claims examiners. As far as pay, compared to other excess and surplus companies examiners  underpaid. The health benefits aren’t good as well as the deductible for a single person is $7,000 and $14,000 for a family.
