I've worked many jobs in varying professions and this is by far the best company I've ever worked for. 

Management actually cares about you as a person and values your contributions. They always treat employees with respect and thank them whenever they go above and beyond to help the rest of the ream.

The benefits are better than all but a a few companies. The offer affordable health insurance (not just individual but for the entire family), retirement benefits (many different types), dental/vision insurance (pretty decent), PTO (Outstanding and starts accruing right away) and many other perks such as employee discounts and help with tuition (even for your children).

The work culture is all about teamwork. If you do your best to help the team you will never have a problem. It can be fast paced and demanding but it is only fair when they treat everyone the same and hold themselves to the same high standards.

The hardest part of the job is the initial training and learning how to fit in with the other workers. If there is one criticism I have it would be that the system for training and integrating new employees is far from the best. You have to be qualified for the job and be ready to hit the ground running after the first few weeks of training. They also require a lot of paperwork demonstrating your work competencies which can become tedious after a while.

The most enjoyable part of my job is helping patient for a company that always puts the patient first. They would rather lose money and provide the best care possible, I truly believe that.

Typical day at work includes doing the usual CNA things as you'd expect:  toileting, feeding if necessary, turning patients, vitals/inputs and outputs, helping out the RNs, etc.  
Where Duke falls short I feel like will never fully be addressed (or want to be addressed by management).  On my unit we're expected to do HUC tasks alongside CNA tasks and most days lately it's near impossible to do all the scanning and chart management that's critical for patients to get their info into their medical charts.  Many of us are burnt out, feel unappreciated, unseen, and unheard.  Management in my department is supportive but favoritism runs rampant; favored employees get raises and climb up the clinical ladder faster than others who keep their head down but do their jobs well (if not better than those being promoted).  When we struggle and bring up issues to management with ideas for solutions, we're low-key told to "deal with it" and issues are forgotten about or pushed to the side.  There's a terrible NA shortage right now and management likes to blame it as a hospital-wide problem instead of taking our suggestions and trying to work out the kinks.  There's a huge emphasis on hiring RNs over aides, and many times RNs are so overwhelmed with their own assignments that they can't even really help aides when we need it....some just don't want to help and have terrible attitudes (per burnout as well).  On top of it all, you have to PAY OUT for parking.  I pay $90 a month to park and I've been on a waitlist for nearly a year for a much cheaper remote lot.  If Duke spent as much energy caring for its employees as they do for their patients, it'd be a much better place to work, but we're leaving in droves because nearby hospitals do better by their employees.

Horrible place to work. Does not pay a cost-of-living wage. Extremely poor work culture. No sick days. If you get sick you get a demerit point against you. A handful of demerits turn into a write up and then termination. No paid holidays. Holidays require using your PTO, no option to keep your PTO. If you don't have any, you don't get paid. If you have no PTO, you cannot have a day off or make an appointment for anything. If you get sick and have no PTO, you don't get paid. If you contract Covid at work, you don't get paid leave, you get demerits. No retirement contribution from Duke, it's 100% self paid. They have a clinical ladder program that, if you choose to do it, requires a ton of work for a 40 cent raise and it doesn't advance your career. No benefits during Covid - No hazard pay, no bonuses, no raises, no nothing. Just lots of emails saying "thank you for your work." Administration took a survey to find out how many employees could not afford food. It was a large number. They recommended that each office collect food donations to donate to its employees. So they collected food from employees to give back to the employees. Can't even make this stuff up. They literally do not care if the employees live or die. Can you work for a company that treats their employees so poorly? Ended up quitting. Found out I have cancer and had no PTO, used them up between holidays and doctor appointments. You can't get any donated PTO unless you take 4 weeks (160 hours) off first. If you have no PTO, you do not get paid for those 4 weeks. I am doing better on government assistance than I was at Duke.

The company name is the best part of working for Duke.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The lack of proper onboarding, the Duke Culture,  ni receiving support from management, Doctors having the God complex, the environment is unsanitary, no being about to truly help ppl in my former role,  the employee morale, and a lot of management need to be let go or retrained on how to properly support/ advocate for staff. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The work environment is oppressive and the culture is no matter what your job is is your job to make sure Duke always looks good even when they’re not good the culture is not built for the consumer. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
You start your day with the morning huddle of your assigned champion area. That means you get a summary of whatever happen overnight or over the weekend to make sure that everybody is up-to-date and aware of what’s going on in the hospital around the hospital if there’s been any incidents, they need extra help or tension in certain areas like the emergency department. Then you go on with your day getting a sign cases and every day is different so you can’t really predict how your day is going to be. But that’s one perk of the job is not ever going to be boring and you’re going to do a lot of walking which is a positive to me.

When Supply Chain was created I was one of the ones assigned to the department. Started out alright, but over time things began to get more unorganized, people started to leave (AND THEY STILL ARE ) causing staffing issues that upper management didn't want to address. In the same time adding more areas of the hospital under the umbrella of the Supply Chain which caused more work, more confusion, more delays in supply turnaround and MORE STRESS. While this is happening management is patting themselves on the back or pointing figures when they get called on the carpet.

Management is slack in dealing with behavior problems or absentee issues cause "AS LONG AS THEIR WORK GETS DONE OR AS LONG AS SO AND SO CAN COVER WE ARE GOOD". PUTTING MORE STRESS ON OTHERS. So when multiple people call out because of College Homecomings or Holidays you have a mess that the few who actually appreciate their job has to clean up. 

Management lack of communication concerning job status or transfer to another area to help put out another managers flaming dumpster fire. Only when confronted do they acknowledged knowing about it and then put a positive spin on it without giving you the REAL REASONS for the move. 


Flaming dumpster fire was exactly that, between attitude problems, people calling out all the time and management unable to deal with either and plus your new work schedule..   IT WAS TIME TO GO!!

I used to be so optimistic about Duke, now I would not willingly set foot in one of their clinics. 

My experience was exciting at first, but that quickly changed. My training was held with a different team at a different location. I would have felt more comfortable training with the staff I would be working with the most, which I expressed to my leadership. 

When I finished my 30 and 60 days, I did not realize I would be doing everything but triage for two uncertified CMAs, on top of my own assigned provider! Being certified meant I was expected to take on the other half of two peoples workload and maintain my own. I'm referring to assisting in procedures, medicine administration, care instructions that CMAs were allowed to do with patientsin that clinic, and basically everything but triage for providers not assigned to me that day. I had the pleasure of triaging my own providers patients thankfully. First impressions and hospitality matter. 

They were not allowed to do certain tasks for their providers, but other certified CMAs were expected to take care of their assigned providers and others.

I felt like I was set up to fail and it was such a miserable experience. It made me step away from healthcare entirely at this point.

It all really made me, my experience, and my credentials feel worthless. For an OBGYN to not be understanding of how childcare was an unaffordable expense at the time for myself and my family.


Being owned by CHS, you had no input to processes, everything came from corporate.  Your suggestions and ideas at the facility level are not heard.   When Administration announced they would decrease all FT non-clinical work hours, I  asked to spearhead a cost savings team that would utilize staff ideas to resolve expense issues. Administration shut it down saying they had looked at  all alternatives.  "Administration limited staff printing/copying with color".  Seriously?    How about the suggestion shot down of putting new employee handbook on a flash drive vs., printing 80 pages for each new employee, which is mostly thrown away.  Then you include paper /ink to print on, staff labor hours to sort and staple.
When there is a change that has to be made to the documents, any previously printed copies are thrown away and more copies, ink, staff time involved  to update.  Not to mention the trees.

 Horrible motivation. 

Administration is in an ivory tower rarely seen in the halls of the hospital, except for the CNO.  Promotional opportunities are available only to the "in" crowd.  

LNRMC works you like a dog and pay is not comparable to local facilities.  And they wonder why turnover is approx.30% .  They cannot keep the best talent.

Unfortunate, for the community to have a hospital that is so dysfunctional.  Lot's of good staff people work here.

Duke University was the most impressive facility on my resume. This facility was a very difficult, high stress facility to work in with high acuity patients in many different areas of nursing. Often this ED was short staffed, had cliques, and was difficult to get assistance when one had a sick patient. The staff was friendly, but overworked, and underpaid for the amount of abuse they received from the patients they would care for. The psychiatric population was very high and many medical patients would often have dual diagnosis making it often very hard to care for them. There were large numbers of IV drug users and alcoholics seen every day in the patient population, and many times this population would verbally and physically abuse staff. Duke was a great learning environment and is and excellent teaching facility. The staff was very knowledgeable and very laid back unless the ED was extremely short staffed with high volume. Often there were 20-30 people in the waiting room each shift. EMS was great in Durham and always assisted doing things that were necessary for patient care on their arrival to ED. Overall it was a great place to work, but was a very stressful and strenuous environment at times.

A typical day at work is to come in and catch up on any email that may have posted the night before regarding patient accounts.  Once those are caught up, I check the responses from insurance companies regarding questions I have sent to them regarding payments and processing of claims per our contract.  I then work my delinquent accounts from the oldest to the newest and review the patient account for any payments received, any claim denials and submit documentation when needed, adjust the account according to contractual obligations, move the account from the insurance processing side to the patient responsibility in the event that the patient owes any money - or if the error is on our part I adjust the claim in our accounts receivable system to show no patient responsibility.  Management is very professional and always willing to help for difficult cases regarding insurance denials.  My co-workers are upbeat and friendly and dedicated to their jobs.  The hardest part of the job is to see how many accounts are out there that must be worked and you feel pressure to catch them all up in one day which isn't always possible.  The most enjoyable part of the job is the research that goes into claims when insurance companies are trying to deny claims for medical necessity.  It feels good when you can get a resolution for the patient.

Ordering supplies and helping customer with their purchases, questions and making sure items that customer want that is not in supply, could be order at a timely matter for customer satisfaction.
Unfortunately, there are times when items or merchandise customer ask for could not be accomplished, because either the merchandise or items are discontinue or no longer available for sale, but always strive to replace it with a merchandise or item that is similar. Kept the store displays and items updated with seasonal events to improve and attract sales, as well as for a normal typical event. Receive, approve, check-in and verified delivery by store orders forms and company invoices to ensure the quantities, items, as wells as condition correspond.

As a Department Coordinator for Duke University Medical Center Bookstore, have learn how improving a customer relationship doing he/she transaction,  purchases, as well as providing their needs and wants, instill the ability of knowing a customer will return because of services render to he/she satisfaction. Furthermore, when going beyond the expectation of providing excellent service for a customer is the most enjoyable part of the job.
