What is the best part of working at the company?
This is a great company to start your career in a clinical role, as one will need an enormous amount of energy to fulfill all expectations and even more in a Director  role. There’s an 80% productivity requirement- even if you’re a director. They brainwash their  employees to believe that they are the largest cost in the company, when in reality it is the upper management on a high “salary” based pay module that absorbs the profits. The little guy remains hourly, based only on caseload they’ve acquired with zero assistance from these well-paid upper managers and regional directors. If you have 3 hours of treatment per day it is considered your fault that you have failed in convincing residents (via quarterly screens and past patients) to receive therapy services to build and maintain caseload. New move-ins are a possibility for caseload; however, through Insurance co-pays, co-insurance, going to another therapy provider, and deductibles this also fights against you as most people can’t afford this and if they really need therapy services they can readily get it “free” through an off-site home health provider that will come into the building. As long as they get their productivity out of you (the workhorse) they are simply okay with you getting 14 hours of pay per week though you’re considered full time. Expect to “live” at their buildings paid or not because the leadership there (E.D., DON, etc.) expect to see you all day as their contracted in-house therapy provider because it’s our privilege to rent a room there inside their building. Apparently, working 8 hours a day and getting paid for 4-6 is the average norm. It’s a lose-lose battle if you’re in a smaller building and between insurance issues, registered nurse requirements for wound care, and low census it’s hard to get and stay ahead of this game. Upper managers will commend you on this exasperated approach to your livelihood - to set a good example to your building that you will do anything to maintain their good graces. Don’t forget the daily 30-min meetings, the daily clubs to run, the weekly in-services, and the monthly events you must prepare for and deliver personally, clean the toilets, document you’ve sterilized your gym daily, and so much more, on top of the clinical and business side of your job (if a director). No wonder there is such a high turnover in this company. They just can’t keep good employees for long, as it becomes apparent in the unfair battles of support from upper management to keep your building happy while dragging you down and through the mud until you’ve had enough. And don’t even get me started on their technical difficulties that create duplicate work and sometimes triple the work as part of the business side of your workload.  A lot of responsibility and headache for the hours and pay if you’re the workhorse director. The staff therapists and assistants have it pretty good though as long as you’re willing to go to 2-3 different buildings a day to get your hours.

EVERYTHING.

This company's sole focus is operational numerics, revenue and "taking over" the industry. They are so focused on revenue, cutting corners (cutting positions, below-average wages, combining positions, etc) that patient quality care, employee emotional health and happiness (including retention) are severely sacrificed.

If you enjoy a work-life full of stress, below-average pay scale, splitting your time between multiple buildings, understaffed facilities, unrealistic work load, unrealistic expectations from management and lack of support from the management team... then this company is for you!

In my brief 5 months with this company, I had learned that within the last ONE YEAR... NINE DIFFERENT PEOPLE had either stepped down to lesser positions or had left the company altogether due to company culture (unrealistic expectations, poor pay, etc). This was within my region of 5 buildings, alone.

Company expects you to uphold a variety of programs for each facility, however give you no time to actually do a decent job in doing so due to productivity expectations. You are expected to hold monthly health talks, host monthly events, host weekly exercise classes, visit EVERY NEW RESIDENT when they move in, AND MORE. There are no rehab techs, and therefore you must also schedule all patients, fax physicians, insurance verifications, etc, all the while maintaining 70% productivity. If a patient cancels and you can't fill the gap? You get penalized and get to go home. No work... no pay.

Their wellness programs expect you to lead classes of a certain week duration (4 weeks or so), however don't give you any guidance on WHAT to do in these classes other than a useless bullet-point outline. Therefore, you must take time to research how to hold a certain genre class (example: tai chi, yoga, etc). You then get reprimanded for taking the time do so, as it compromises your ability to achieve your 70% productivity expectation. God forbid you have to take time to teach yourself these things to avoid making yourself look like an incompetent therapist to the ILF/ALF community.

Company recent cut all wages to therapy assistants nationwide. In such poor taste, this was done by a horrific email to all staff. No live Zoom meeting with a discussion or Q&A from corporate. No apology. Nothing. What a slap in the face to their work force. The CEO then tried to save face by sending another email after about how he had taken his own pay-cuts, thus digging his hole deeper. Such an insult to the people that drive the company. There is a wage freeze also, which they fail to tell you about upon hire.

NEVER in my career have I been happier to completely sever ties with a company. I have never been more miserable in my 13 year carreer as an OTR and RD.

RUN AWAY FAST.

You basically work in a building and have to create a caseload from that pool of people that live there and you use up all their Medicare the whole year and the next year keep doing the same thing. If you decide people aren’t appropriate for therapy and don’t pick people up and don’t meet budget, they start getting on to you like why haven’t you picked people up. And start looking at you like you’re doing something wrong. You aren’t guaranteed 40 hours, you get the hours that you create and during the holiday weeks when no one comes you basically have to use your PTO to make up for it. PTO is also accrued based on the hours you work so if you don’t work enough, you might not even accrue enough time off if you need to take time off because sometimes you just keep using PTO to make sure you get your hours. They also don’t allow time off if you don’t have PTO and supervising managers make you feel like you can’t take time off even if you have enough accrued because there’s no coverage. Which there never is coverage for my area because no one stays working for legacy. They don’t recognize you when you do a good job, they just recognize when a building isn’t doing well and stress the rehab director and therapists out like it’s their fault when it could just be the building or they already picked up whoever they can/exhausted Medicare benefits. They are a non profit company but won’t even give employees good raises, even though we are the reason they are allowed to exist. Maybe if they stopped paying all the higher up corporate people extra $$$$ they could share some love with their hourly employees trying to make a living. They also don’t pay for travel time between buildings and half the time you show up to another building and are told you’ll see x number of patients and you have cancellations or no shows and they don’t want to compensate for that. They expect you to clock in and out to wait for patients because it’s all about the numbers and they want you productive. 

I was hired for a full-time position, but at no point during my time with Legacy was there an adequate caseload to even come close to supporting a full-time position. I was only getting between 15 and 20 hours a week. Rather than working at the two locations I was told I'd be working at when hired, I wound up working mostly at a facility on the other side of my city and frequently had to drive long distances between sites. I stayed on longer than I should have as management kept saying they were working on caseload development, but months passed and management failed to follow through.

Perhaps due to their low caseload, Legacy kept patients on who consistently refused or were otherwise inappropriate for therapy. My days were spent trying to track down patients and practically begging them to participate. Management was completely indifferent, and when I'd voice my concerns with my multi-site manager or rehab director, they were rude, dismissive, condescending, and argumentative. They constantly harped on everyone's productivity, printed out daily reports of each therapist's productivity, and left them out for all to see. They also frequently sent out group texts about productivity but would not consider suggestions to help therapists meet those goals. We were encouraged to clock out and wait around onsite for patients to become available, which is completely unacceptable and I never did. 

Pay was so-so, benefits sounded good until I was hired on and got to read the fine print, and management was a disaster. They misrepresented the position and were completely unapologetic and indifferent. Of the two rehab directors I had, only one was honest and qualified for the position, and that person also left the company. There are much better opportunities out there for therapists; please learn from my experience and avoid this company!

This company made me compromise my ethics, and management encourages you to do many things that are illegal.  I worked with them for over a year.  They encourage staff therapy members to falsify documentation on patient doctor appointment days to make RUGS.  They also give Certified and Licensed Assistants 10-11 patients per day with over 8 hours of therapy, but will penalize them for working over 40 hours per week.  In fact, they encourage assistants (which they have 7-8 of with 1-2 supervising therapist) to co treat their patients, and then fraudulently Bill each patient therapy session like they were seen one on one.  Of course, you never actually see the therapist doing this, but it is as your license is less important than theirs.  There is also little respect between fellow co-workers for the supervising therapist.  The assistants are always talking behind their backs, and smiling to their faces.  The assistants seemed miserable, and expressed they felt they did the OT at this facilities job for him while he made jokes, and played on the internet.  This resulted in a high level of stress, and resentment that was talked about behind closed doors only.  My co-workers nurses, assistants, desk managers, cooks, and social workers were always fun, and a pleasure to be around.  The bottom line I learned was all staff under therapist are encouraged by management to put their license on the line to make RUGS.  They have no real regard for you as a therapist, but care greatly about making the bottom line.  They will go to any length to do so.  The manager was always complaining about the company not making budget to staff workers in spite of the illegal strings she was pulling.  It was as if she was punishing the employee, because the company was so unorganized it rarely made budget as a whole.

It's a shame that I  got written up for low productivity when I've provided the best possible care/service for each patient I've encountered during my tenure in this company. Management doesn't know that, all they know and care about are the numbers. They expect you to build the caseload and work with facility staff by providing various LiveWell programs for residents. Where I worked, they mainly had contracts with ALF and ILF. Management needs to take into account that the facilities are big and it can be time consuming to travel back and forth to residents' rooms. They are very stringent with documentation (evaluations, recertifications, progress reports and daily notes), nitpicking on every single detail. I have 15+ yrs of experience as a therapist, never had issues with documentation until I worked for this company. I thought I did a decent job with documenting and so it was frustrating and disheartening at the same time when what you documented was never good enough for their QA specialist. I've seen other therapists/assistants who have been with the company for years, who were very bad with documentation, did not follow the POC (evident in daily notes) and somehow still got away with it. I left the company because I was not getting my full time hours as the facility had a tough time with building a caseload to the point where we felt like we were just "recycling" patient caseload after a month or less of DC from therapy. I stayed prn and they cut my hourly rate due to Covid, tried to re-negotiate to get the rate back up but to no avail.  

Management cares about bottom line, not keeping trained and dedicated employees. This is a contract company and therefore each bldg. may be different from the next in regard to therapy equipment available, resources used to purchase DME and AE, etc., 
and quality of equipment varies from one bldg. to next. Some equipment is supplied by the facility and other items are responsibility of Legacy. It is a fight to get some things needed in timely manner. Many therapists purchase a some therapy items with personal funds to have media to use for PT, OT, SLP. 
 Some area managers and Dir of Rehab's can be too "cozy" and not truly listen and try to understand the full scope of a problem, or go along with nurse staff just to look after company interest to keep Legacy in a bldg., when it is not always ethically right to.  
Some Dir.of Rehab's are "too nosey" and butt into other employee's personal lives when not invited to or get mad when not accepted as a friend on FB.   Some other rehab employees feared taking lunch time to leave bldg. and socializing with a former teammate when Dir of Rehab may not be happy about it.  
Continuing Ed is offered on limited subjects within the company but many other newer informational and technological education classes must be taken outside the corporation and paid for with personal funds. Legacy does not reimburse for anything but annual license fee.  Advancement in the company is limited as well.

Each individual clinical team that I was on was cohesive and very invested in the patients. There was a wide variety of patient levels which made things more interesting and multiple buildings to check with if I needed hours. 
The focus seemed to always be on maximizing productivity and profit (even after it became part of a non profit).
There were several layers of middle management and there seemed to be a HUGE disconnect between middle management and the patient facing clinical workers. Management was not supportive of the clinical team. There was very minimal training for the on site rehab director (and often only after the RD had been in place for 6 months to a year). Pay was lower here than the average for the area and there were more across the board pay cuts than pay raises while I worked here.  There were no PRN therapists if I needed time off and couldn’t get coverage from another local building. Supplies were often barely adequate. Efficient point of service documentation and communication was a MUST as I was often over booked. Therapists’ opinions were often disregarded in determining if a patient stayed on caseload or was DCd. 

I loved all of the facilities and therapists I worked with. The facilities were some of the nicest I’ve worked in and the work culture within the facilities were great. The patients were wonderful and I actually enjoyed a lot of the programs Legacy implemented. The productivity standards are reasonable for therapists as well. I do have a lot of positive things to say about Legacy and would work there again if the hours and pay were there. However, I do feel they are growing too fast. Upper management continues to change as Legacy adds more facilities before they can even staff the facilities they have. There was a very high rate of turnover, and the focus of upper management seemed to be more on expanding than staff retention. Unfortunately, Legacy hires many people and promises full-time or part-time status when there is only PRN work needed. I got hired for one location, then ended up going between multiple locations across a large area. I didn’t even work at the building I was hired for and pay wasn’t great either. That being said, I still enjoyed the job but just couldn’t sustain the pay and lack of hours. I would recommend this job for others who can be flexible. There’s also always a need for directors or area directors so there is opportunity for advancement if that was something you were looking for. 

Working for Legacy is very flexible. It is easy to build a caseload and rearrange schedules as needed. Start/ end times are very flexible. 

Legacy will bait you with "no weekends, no holidays" and then require you to use your earned PTO if you want a holiday off, AND try to make you make up a visit when the clinic is closed, if you do not stand up for yourself. 

Support from upper management leaves something to be desired. They prioritize maintaining the contract with their buildings over supporting/ standing up for staff. 

Legacy is very eager to grow into new regions and communities but continues to have staffing issues in existing buildings, increasing the burden on their teams while they focus on growth. 

Pay is fair and they do offer annual raises, up to 3%. However, don't expect to see 3% unless you "go above and beyond." Also, you will not be told what your review is based off of until they complete it, so you won't know how to improve your performance throughout the year. 

Productivity is reasonable but expected to be maintained at all times no matter what extra tasks you are helping with. 

All in all, not a bad company to work for, and there are definitely worse. But you do have to stand up for yourself or you will be taken advantage of for the bottom dollar
