Legacy Hospice

The central Virginia Legacy Hospice team seeks and retains excellent team players to provide compassionate care to the community. There is a large amount of autonomy as a case manager in being able to do your job. The hospice physicians are most excellent to work with, are readily available to reach out to and are very responsive and respectful to work with. There is no doubt in my mind that every member/ discipline on the Legacy Hospice team is driven to provide quality and compassionate care to our patients. There is a very strong, supportive team approach in the delivery of care, and the team really does work well together. 
 Most importantly, Legacy Hospice makes sure to support the team with the resources we need to delivery the best care possible. Having additional staff to cover the weekday night and weekend on call coverage is a HUGE SUPPORT to the full time RNCM’s who are very rarely obligated to provide oncall coverage. Having worked for another local hospice company that required its FT salaried RNCM’s to also cover all oncall shifts, this is a HUGE factor in ensuring worker satisfaction and retention. Legacy Hospice makes it obvious that they care about their employees work/life balance and satisfaction and in turn this ensures better delivery of quality care to the patients.

Some of the staff that are in the trenches with you are easy to get along with. Management however is corrupt, have no respect for work/life balance, and will harass those under them to over perform and then reprimand and/or terminate when needs aren’t met. There is no culture of respect, just hierarchy that expects to sit in an office and not get their hands dirty. There is no “family”, workers are just expected to meet standards and keep revenue coming in so that higher ups can keep their luxuries flowing. Charting is expected to be detailed and efficient but also on time, even if that means burning out, not sleeping for 63+ hours when on-call, and there is no help (told not to expect it since it’s your role). Overworked and sometimes blatantly told you will not be paid for hours worked to having time sheets amended before submission for pay period. Lastly, don’t expect empathy or compassion as an employee; if you’re sick or going through something personal, you will be treated as less than and still expected to work to full capacity. DO NOT TAKE A POSITION HERE UNLESS YOU LIKE BEING WORKED TO DEATH, HELD TO IMPOSSIBLE STANDARDS, AND BEING DEVALUED. 

A big part of our daily routine is educating patients and families that hospice is not about imminent death but about the quality of life and how to seize the most of each day. Management encourages and supports personal and professional growth in each team member. We’ve created a workplace culture that attracts and retains staff in an environment that recognizes and appreciates each employee’s contribution to our success. The most enjoyable part of the job is being able to support each patient and their family on their journey to the end of life which also creates the hardest part of the job, letting go….. but we are honored to be given the opportunity to be part of the journey for every patient and we realize that we will not be everything to everybody, but we will be everything to everybody who chooses Legacy Hospice. 

This company has a lovely feel-good story about a family Legacy. The man who interviews you will get misty eyed and act sincere and genuine when he interviews you. You'll feel special because they will flatter you but it's just smoke and mirrors. From day one you will see the disorganization and chaos. You'll continue to scratch your head and wonder what's going on here until you finally realize- you've been conned. Ask what their turnover rate and average employee tenure stats are. The mid-level managers are nice but all the decisions are made at the c-suite level and are misguided. All they care about is money, not people.

Poor management and very authoritarian leadership. If you speak up, management will treat you badly, retaliate against you and fire you. Toxic environment with lots of gossiping and false accusations without any investigation. Revolving door!
If you are a Social Worker, you will be told to take up the role of a Volunteer Coordinator as well which is a new program and very demanding. You will cover the Ashburn office patients too. Little or no training for both positions. Lots of driving involved with the SW position.
Most enjoyable part of the job is making a difference in lives of all the patients/families that I worked with.


I promoted Hospice services to physicians, hospitals, nurses, and SNF/ALF's. I did grant writing for the agency they are non-profit.  I also worked with the agency volunteers and recruited volunteers.  I also did referral talks with the families and patients prior to admissin to hospice services to evalute eligibility and readiness. The hardest part of the job was lack of communication by the director. I enjoyed working with the nursing staff and volunteers.

I started with Legacy a few months ago and have been pleasantly surprised at the positive culture at my location.  It has been a breath of fresh air to feel valued and respected for my clinical judgement, job performance and work ethic.  So far, I have felt very supported while learning the particulars of my role without significant pressure.  All in all, has been a great experience and I look forward to continuing my journey with Legacy and the potential for growth in my career.

The Legacy Charlottesville team consists of a superb group of people cultivating the same mission - quality care at the end of life. We support one another and recognize that the care cannot be provided without every single team member. Legacy values it’s employees and encourages the agency to just “do the right thing.” I could not be more proud of my team and feel blessed to be a part of it!

Working with the Shenandoah Valley team at Legacy Hospice is a pleasure. Everyone from the Office Manager to the Certified Nursing Assistants are compassionate and dedicated to helping patients and families at the end of life. It is special to be able to say that there is not a single staff member that I would not trust to care for my own loved one. Very proud of this crew and the culture within the office. I enjoy coming to work everyday.

Love working with a group that takes the time to teach and help when you stumble. Not a cutthroat environment. Coworkers are supportive of one another, management helps not hinders.  People here want to do the very best for patients and their family, especially during such a difficult time in their lives.   Compassion and empathy is key at Legacy!
