A typical day at work was often filled with drama. When working at a nursing home you expect there to be some kinks but this place takes the cake. From the moment I started working there I was always being thrown in the rumor mill and having to deal with nasty co-workers who didn't like me for no reason. Every other person in my department hated each other for unknown reasons and everyone had a clique. There were constant arguments going on between the staff, including management. It was literally like high school but the movie versions. Management was very hot and cold. My department head walked off the job on numerous occasions. She and the assistant managers also had a habit of changing people's schedules whom they didn't like without notifying them just so that person would be a no call no show. They would also cut their hours hoping they'd quit. The managers would argue with each other. The department head wasn't shy about going off on the staff. We would get blamed for things and told we weren't doing our jobs despite the fact that upper management was aware of multiple equipment issues that prevented us from doing so, we even frequently received termination threats. My boss would also often make it public knowledge before she was about to fire someone. The only thing that kept me going to work with a smile on my face was the residents and a pay check. Otherwise, I was relieved to get fired.

Working for a company that has such a big heart, truly allows you to believe in what you do everyday. I wanted to share a letter that was sent to us: 

I would like to express my appreciation to all of the staff at Encore for the care they provided to my mother during her stay at Encore, but especially during the two weeks that she was there. This care and concern was also extended to my father, not only while he sat by Mom's bedside, but also when he returned to the Assisted Living area of Encore. Their compassion during this time enabled the family to focus on Mom and to know that Dad would be looked after when we were not there. 

I wish to also acknowledge the concern expressed by the members of the administrative staff to the members of my family during the difficult time leading up to Mom's death. We were all very stressed and knowing that there was someone to whom we could confide was comforting. 

On the day of Mom's funeral while picking up my father, my husband, discovered that he had a flat tire. A member of your maintenance staff, was kind enough to change the tire for him which kept him from possibly damaging his suit and keeping him on schedule for the service. 

Again, thank you for all that you did for the family.

I have been a GNA at Lorien of Taneytown for eight years. All together, I have 15 years of GNA experience. I will tell you that being a GNA has never been, nor will it ever be an easy job. The physical and emotional demands of taking care of the elderly is hard. It is one of the most difficult things you will ever do. With that being said, it is also one of the most amazing things you will ever be a part of. During my time with Lorien, I have met some of the most phenomenal people to ever have walked this planet. I have made bonds and formed friendships that I will treasure for the rest of my life. Not just with residents, but coworkers, and even members of management. I am never lacking when I need help. GNA's work in pairs here. Some may find it odd, but you have no idea how essential it is to have a partner available when you need them. The sheer volume of stress this reduces is outstanding. And I have to add that I am not at all uncomfortable speaking to administration about anything. I feel like we really are all family and friends here. I've even been given the opportunity to advance my career with an education, which is something I never thought I would be able to do.

The most challenging aspect is managing the emotional demands that come with patient care. However, the supportive environment and comprehensive training programs make it manageable. The most rewarding part is making a tangible difference in residents' lives and being part of a team that values compassion and integrity. 

Lorien is a nice facility with nice co-workers. When it comes to your job though...I must say it isn't very secure. Lorien is one of those places where you have to know the right people and you'll always have to worry about who you're talking to and watch what you say. When I say "watch what you say", it isn't the normal use appropriate language and stay professional in the work area. When I say "watch what you say" I mean if nursing is doing something wrong, watch how you complain because it will always come back to get you. if you would like to voice your opinion; prepare to be fired or treated differently. You want sick time and have it rightfully so but might be granted a littl more by your doctor, expect management not to be that caring and want to hold your job even though legally they should. The loan they offer to employees...it's a trap. Always make sure your check is right because they never will. By "them", I mean corporate. As an employee, I say boooo to Lorien. As a resident....It's a 50/50 chance?

A typical day of work consists of multi-managing multiple patients needs and schedules during the duration of my scheduled shift. Accommodating to each patients personal needs and appointments and meal schedules is a constant focus. Documentation of each patient is required along with performing tasks in a timely manor is a must. During my time at encore I have been motivated to seek a higher education to further my opportunities in the field. I have learned with my employment at Encore to multi-task and communicate better. The hardest part of my job is at times working with inconsistent staff which can easily cause the flow of the day to be less proficient or organized. Despite these challenges, I greatly enjoy the feeling I get when I know I went above and beyond to help someone in need. I enjoy staying active and making sure each patient feels that their needs are met.

A typical day at work involves patient care, coordination with the healthcare team, and following safety protocols. Each day brings meaningful interaction with patients and opportunities to learn. I’ve developed stronger communication skills, adaptability, and gained valuable medical knowledge.

The hardest part of the job is managing multiple urgent situations at once, but support from coworkers makes it manageable. The most enjoyable part is making a real difference in patients’ lives and being part of a team that feels like family.

Dysfunction from the top down.  The administrator allows it to be a horrible, vicious, hostile place to work.  The Dir of Nursing instigates the nastiness by turning employees against each other.  She cleverly will not allow employees to speak or work together, even telling one person that someone else is talking about them, when in fact, this is not true.  The HR director continues to allow this environment of hate, desperation, and insecurity to grow without any end in sight. If they want to fire you, they will do it by write ups, with complete false accusations.  You can come in and do your job, but if they want to fire you, for no reason, they will.  The Dir of Nursing walks around in a constant state of hate.  She can literally walk down the hall way and just fire someone because she wants to.  The HR dir allows this.

I will always say that working at Lorien in Taneytown, MD was the best job I ever had. Unfortunately, I had to resign due to getting a divorce. I thoroughly enjoyed working with the residents and the faculty there was close knit and the definition of Teamwork. It was never like I was "at work". It was like I was going to see my second family. The management there, the DON, charge nurses, and administrators all had everyone's best interest at heart. The hardest part of my job was when there wasn't enough aides or nurses to care for the patients which was very rare actually. I learned being there that healthcare is my true passion. I wanted to be apart of one on one care to the patients so I could see first hand how to provide care and treatment to patients for when I go to obtain my RN.

While interacting with the residents could be rewarding at times,most of the time it was a sad and depressing place to be. The nursing home is divided up into wealthy self paying residents on the first floor, and second floor is all Medicare, insurance based and Rehab residents. The first floor self paying residents were treated like gold compared to the second floor residents, and I was not told when hired that I would be limited to second floor patients only. Upstairs, residents are suffering and crying and begging to be changed or moved out of their beds, their quality of life is next to nothing, and the only highlight of their day was an hour of bingo. Also the pay for this position was extremely low and there was zero transparency in the company and communication between co workers was near zero.
