This was my first job as a nurse and I learned a lot. The other nurses there were been nothing but supportive, helpful, and patient. The pay was fair and the benefits were decent. However, hospital administration and the entire HCA company was focused on a profit. They overwork you, take advantage of your kindness, put you in unsafe situations, and cut corners wherever they can. I have lost faith in the hospital system. They claim to be patient-focused but you may learn early-on that is not the case. They have removed a large number of support staffing positions, they still use Meditech charting system, and they are slow to implement evidence-based-practices. I have been told this used to be a great place to work, but now, they staff the floors almost entirely with new grads because they pushed out most of the experienced nursing staff. This is not the worst place ever to work for, but always be cautious when it comes to your license. 

Volunteering at Los Robles Hospital was not only eye-opening but it was also a very rewarding experience. In my two years I have spent there I have learned so much about the job, different hospital departments, the responsibilities, different people, and also a lot about myself. I got to experience what working at a hospital may be like, with the different people and different environment. But the best part of volunteering was definitely helping the patients and patients' families. I had the responsibility of bringing food and/or flowers to patients, bringing blood/specimens to different hospital units, and helping discharging patients (sometimes mothers and newborn babies) on wheelchairs when they were leaving the hospital. Seeing the sincere gratitude in these individuals not only made every day of mine which I spent there but it was also beyond any monetary reward I could have received.

I've worked as an RN at LR for 5 years, and there were a lot of changes during this period. The hospital grew tremendously but they did not expand the staff to accommodate the growth. Management was terrible, middle management positions are a revolving door, as expectations for staff from upper management are unrealistic. Needs of staff to do their job right are dismissed in favor of profit, this creates staff burnout, high turnover. Since patient satisfaction means money, management will make you bleed to make it look perfect for the patient. No support, you're just a number, unfair and often illegal management practices, fear based, low morale.

Working for another hospital in the county now, the difference is night and day. Very glad I left and would never work for HCA again, a corrupt, ruthless, profit hungry bunch.

Volunteered here when I was intern at a hospital and let me tell you this:

This place is incredible. The moment you walk in you feel like you're in a 5 star hotel and the staff are so nice and joyful.

I volunteered at the Main Lobby directing patient families / soon to be parents where to go.

Not sure if Norma is still around but she has been there for way too many years. Super sweet girl.

Joe recently passed away and he was the one who interviewed me during this whole volunteering thing.

One thing I noticed though is that if you're a young person and you attend meetings... DO NOT. I repeat. DO NOT give suggestions to them because they will start a fit. I suggested that the census be shown via computer at the main lobby so that patient status would be up to date and next thing you know it was like a WWE match with everyone getting ready to throw chairs at you.

Pretty cool place though. Just stick with your clique

High demand, little reward. No encouragement. Management has favorites. MUST  do "volunteer" work to advance. No breaks, little sympathy from management. Management unwilling or unable to assist when staffing is poor and ratios are high. lunch breaks at 5pm.
Its all about appearance. Rooms look big and lots of furniture, however, furniture makes it more difficult for patients to get around, encourages excessive visitors (hoping family will assist in care) because nurses are spread too thin. No aides, no secretaries, nurses are expected to triage, admit to hospital (do admissions), assess, put in doctors orders, draw labs, computerized charting all on multiple patients...OH and take care of patients...assist with PT, dressing changes, assist to bathroom...oh and answer the phones...and they wonder why satisfaction rates are so low.

My typical day of work, working in Preoperative care is admitting patients for surgery. Taking a thorough health assessment , educating patient and family on surgical procedure and post op care.
Start I.V and perform any other test ordered. The most enjoyable part of my job is educating people and helping them cope with their
surgical experience.

Also, work in surgery when needed,, My typical day in surgery is
taking the patient from pre-op and ease their anxiety and help them cope with the actual surgical experience. Once asleep, positioning is done,surgical prep of body part. Assisting surgeon,anesthesia and surgical tech to complete case.Also educating in scrubbing on cases,but usually not needed to. Keeping accurate records on computer/chart.

I was a floater at Los Robles Hospital. I did various runs throughout the hospital. Discharging patients as well as doing specimen samples to lab were some of my daily activities. Management was excellent. They worked with my school and work schedule very well. The hardest part of the job was leaving after a shift. Floater shifts are only once a week for 4 hours. Most enjoyable part of the job was being able to float and run errands throughout the hospital. As a volunteer you can assist patients as well as medical professionals in each unit of the hospital. This was important to me because as a nursing student I was able to see exactly what unit of the hospital I wish to be in after graduation. I found volunteering at Los Robles to be very important because it was my first experience with patient care.

There were some days more hectic than others but overall it was a team effort. I started before we used computers, I was able to learn the computer systems from the beginning, with the medi-tech computer system I was also instrumental in putting in place the scheduling modules for the radiology and cardiology departments. I also was able to receive on the job training to become an ekg tech and to transfer to the cardiology department. My supervisors were very helpful in keeping a team effort in the work place, my co-workers and I worked well together. The hardest part of the job was keeping our department up to JACHO standards. I found the most enjoyable part of the job was helping patients and family through trying times and found it to be rewarding as well.

Managment here is a joke. I worked in the Radiology Department and was closely associated with the Emergency Room.  Managent in Radiology buckles to the will of the ER.  At the end of every quarter, people would be made to flex hours in order to meet the budget, so you would be short staffed during this time even though the workload was the same.  I learned how to be proactive and be a patient advocate.  I also learned how to better manage my time and prioritize the workflow in order to get as many patients done in a timely manner.  I often felt pressured to expedite patient exams in order to gain throughput, which in turn made the patients experience suffer.

I was both housekeeping in a patient safety attendant in the whole four years and 11 months I’ve been there. They’re not very understanding. All the bosses are shady. Everybody has their favorites you can get fired for stupid little things. It’s too bad because they have the best benefits and the pay is higher than most hospitals but it’s a dirty hospital and by dirty I mean it the management is shady, it’s filled with greed and they don’t care about their employees.
