I worked the graveyard shift. This job is great for someone who is advancing in the medical field from a Patient Care Tech. But only if you work nights, as you earn the night time differential. But even at that the work at  Rehab is tasking. Some nights can be easier than others. The Patient Care Tech to Patient Ratio should be about one tech to 6 Patients. But during my time there it was usually 9-11 Patients per tech. The work is alot and it is heavy. There is a certain time that you are expected to finish your vitals, showers  and CBG's (Glucose tests) by. Sometimes there are several patients who need bladder scans as well, every 4-6 hours. Then there are blood draws at 3:30 am. In the midst of all these tasks, you must answer call lights. If you have to do alot if showers that night, or if patients are calling alot, that can set you back some. As patients will need to go to the bathroom etc. Most times if you get behind or have a heavy patient, when you need help your nurse will help. But sometimes you get a nurse who is not very helpful. Or who is unavailable. You can ask the other tech who might help, but usually they are busy as well. Patients are there for Rehabilitation. More than not they are in alot of pain and need a lot of help. They can be irritable and some call alot. You will be changing briefs, sometimes full bed changes if there is an accident. Some patients are very heavy and are not able to help you. Even though you are told by superiors to ask for help with these patients, help isn't always available. To add to this, you need to be well adjusted to working a graveyard job. Yes, it is only 3 nights. But then you have to sleep the next day. If you don't sleep well, you will be tired. All this will eventually take its toll on your body. The schedule is as the scheduler chooses. You will never have a set schedule. If you ask for certain nights to work, you won't get them. There is a second differential for weekend nights, but you will only get one weekend night every so often. The weekend nightd are only given regularly to those who are in school. I wouldn't recommend working the day shift, as the patients are awake and the work is more demanding and the pay is way less. If you're in school and studying to be a nurse, and have the strength and stamina to keep up, well then this job can be good for you. I learned a lot from my experience working there. Made a lot of friends. The money is great and there is always overtime. But it is a lot of work. This job is not for everyone. Nor is the graveyard shift. If they would've been more willing to work with us on scheduling, and balance out the tech to patient ratio constantly, more people would be willing to stay with them and work. Unfortunately that wasn't the way of it when I left. I was overworked and eventually re-aggravated a prior injury which forced me to resign. 

What is the best part of working at the company?
The patients. For the most part, they’re all very kind and courteous very pleasant to assist.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The Management team does not communicate well. One doesn’t know what the other one is doing. Then they attempt to place blame on the employees. Huge turnover. Changing the workflow process and not letting all the employees know which causes some very disgruntled employees. Which intern causes conflict. Everyone seems to be out for themselves or who they’re buddies with. The MAs pick and choose who they like and who they want to work with.  Favoritism is always shown to certain employees. The department will attempt make your work life miserable. Luckily I did not fall into their trap.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
They stated the work environment and culture is excellent and they’re striving to bring out the best in everyone. That is far from the truth. I have never worked with a group of such toxic and miserable individuals in my life.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
I kept myself I have made a few friends that we had each other’s backs. The supervisor/Mgr had their Pet employees and were granted special opportunities to leave early or be informed of changes. While others were not told or informed and would get spoken to in a degrading way then rushed out of their office and told to get back to work. You had no opportunity to have a voice. The position was to check in patients check them out schedule/reschedule verify insurances assist patients that had issues or concerns. Hopefully the culture is turning around. I have heard that the manager has been removed from her position.

A typical day at work
Answering incoming calls and providing a good Customer Service experience for every call and making those appointments.  To ensure that we have a one resolution call that the member has the best experience when they call Lovelace.

What I have learned
Lovelace provides training to make your job easier. I have learned a different computer scheduling system and has made the job easier.
I have learned to be more productive with all the information give us when we attend training to enhance our skills to do a better job. I have learned to more compassionate and understanding of our members in their needs and making them feel comfortable when I receive a call.

Good environment great team of people.  
Management encourages the team by providing information by emails for any changes that will affect our job by providing updates within the Company from other departments to minimize our errors that may impact our Customer Service Members.

Management:  They have to encourage the team excel to offer more opportunities for other departments.

They have a great culture with different backgrounds.

Hardest job sometimes is the overturn of employees in this department.

The enjoyable part of the job is providing the most professional job to our patients and working with a great team of staff makes the job easier to handle.

I still am currently employed but administrators don't give a darn about employees. It's all about the money. I am full time employee scheduled 40 hours a week but the past 4 months I'll be lucky to get 30 hours a pay period. I get sent home constantly because not enough patients. Last week alone i worked 8 hours of my scheduled 40. Then continue to hire more staff when they can't give there current staff appropriate hours. How can anyone make a living with that. Plus I have to pay for insurance so my checks are basically nothing. Upper management is horrible. Try to talk to them and they won't take time to listen or mention concerns about hours and are told go find employment elsewhere.  Floor staff for the most part are great. Just sucks when I've been there for nearly 10 years and they treat you like this. You get PTO ( I'm supposed to earn enough to take at least 30 days a year) but I had to use it all to try to make up for the hours I lost when I got sent home so no way to take a vacation. Very disappointed in this company... they don't care about you it's all about money...... wouldn't recommend my worst enemy to apply....  place has gone down hill terribly in the past 3-4 yrs. I stayed because hard to find a decent job in a rural area

Hospitals themselves are great, providing quality care.  Doctors and nurses are skilled and dedicated.  Respiratory care team itself is a cohesive team at Lovelace Medical Center.  Some significant personnel issues at Heart Hospital which do not in any way affect patient care, but do make the work environment personally difficult and trying   

The only problem I had was with lower management (departmental management), which is a definite issue.  Ineffective, inaccessible, and inconsistent, continuing to allow certain work conditions that are unacceptable. This is possibly attributable to lack of experience, but there seems to be no path to improvement.

If departmental management changed thereby addressing personnel issues at Heart Hospital, I would go back to Lovelace without hesitation.

This place was good to work at in the beginning. However, the scheduling is really messed up and the scheduler does not listen to you. She is rude if you ask for anything in regards to scheduling. This place is a good place to gain some knowledge as a tech. It is better for nurses though. You work hard as a tech here and although nurses are there to help you, most of them don’t. They expect you to do everything while they sit down playing their phone, eating seaweed, and sipping tea. The pay is not good unless you work graveyard because of the differential. There is also cliques there. If you don’t fit in, you just don’t. People leave their floor to eat with the charge nurse during the night shift without saying anything leaving you to answer their call lights. Some nurses (mostly the men -2 to be exact) are very disrespectful and lazy and the charge nurses back them up without listening to you. Like I said you can learn a few things, but not a good place for advancement or staying long term. Get in, gain some knowledge, and get out.

When I started working at Lovelace on Gibson, I could easily give five stars for each section above. By the time I left from Lovelace Downtown, the ratings had dropped to this. My manager had no experience on the job and didn't learn anything about it. Ardent had purchased Lovelace and St. Josephs and was busy integrating and ruining the health systems. Last month Albuquerque Health Partners freed themselves from the Ardent Lovelace. Ardent ran us on the bottom line; produce money at the expense of care. They had me doing the jobs previously of four people; plus they complicated that to the point of ridiculous. All the employees were stressed or "travelers." I kept holding on to the memory of better days before Ardent until it became impossible. The people I met there through the years were the best; though most of them left when Ardent took over.

Pros:  I am well paid and have good benefits.

Cons:  Outweigh the above.  My initial impression while interviewing was that of a company which cares very much for both their patients and employees, however my experience has been anything but.  NPs are treated with an appalling level of disrespect and focus is on revenue alone.  Schedules are loaded to the brim without breaks or time for returning patient calls, addressing labs, etc.  Patients are left hanging when providers suddenly leave & have a great amount of difficulty obtaining appointments.  Management and communication are inefficient monstrosities.  In provider staff meetings, management bemoan having to accept medicare or medicaid patients.  Because of turn over, support staff are always in training making every day stressful and difficult to keep up with the schedule and other demands.  My experience has been frustrating, sad and a big disappointment.  I would not recommend this company to other mid-level providers.

It may be hit or miss depending on the department worked in there.  My experience was less than desirable.  The HR department completely turned over while I was there, and the upper management were all replaced.  The pay is subpar, and the communication is highly ineffective.  The standards and equipment are archaic.  The department I worked in was ran by a charge nurse who was also a direct supervisor of a family member.  There was definitely favoritism on my unit, and the communication was horrible.  The was never confirmation on schedule until less than 12 hours prior to start, and even if you well in advanced advised you could not work, the charge nurse would keep you on the schedule after acknowledging you were not available any more, and turn into a bully parading power in the ability to tarnish your name in the facility.  If the entire facility is ran like that, it is a sad thing.

Just run like the wind from this place!! Don't be surprised to learn that there are possibly many repeat convicted felons in this hospital. Run your own background checks if you are suspicious or experience strange behavior.That is bc when Lovelace HR runs a criminal background check they ONLY run the state of New Mexico and not a national data base or an FBI background on their permanent employees. If Lovelace in Albuquerque should ever decide to run a REAL background check on the employees, nationally and an FBI check they would need to replace the multi-state convicted felons with real healthcare professionals and this would help the hospital status into a true healthcare situation. The workplace culture the aroma of "all rejects of society welcome".
