Loyola University Medical Center is a great place to work. I was hired in December, 2000. In Janurary , 2001I went through an extensive orientation class. I was also paid for it but they made sure that the department that you were hired for you definitely knew the function of your job. I worked in the clinics on the main campus. They're is team work at which is very important.  I was on the team of the cancer center. Not only did we have regular clinics, we had a multidisciplinary clinics every week also. That included lung, gastrointestinal, and breast. Whether the patient was new, a second opinion, or already a patient of the campus and were diagnosed with cancer we were involved in their care. What was so great about the multidisciplinary clinic was is the patient got to meet the oncology surgeon, hematology oncologist, radiation oncologist, and pathologist to take samples if need be. Once the patient went through with seeing the appropriate set of physicians, they all went to another room and all the nurses were able to attend and listen to what the best action to take was for that patients treatment was and decide if that was it. At the time of this meeting you were able to view on the overhead projector the xrays, MRI's, and Ct scans, and the pathology slides of the actual diseased cells. Very amazing!! Than we resume clinic and discuss all option to the patients and their families. From there the patient makes their decision. Usually they have one to two options to choose from, and sometimes three. So being involved in all of that your educational level goes through the roof. 
          With any job they're are always some kind of negativity, cliques, or squabbles between coworkers but you just don't get involved with that. You are there to do your job and be there for the patient. The patient should always be first.

Most of the nursing supervisors are VERY unsupportive to staff. Staff is often sent to work on units that they are not qualified to provide patient care for. The times I worked night shift, staff was loud, playful and slept at the nursing station frequently but that didn't occur in the ICUs. Never saw the CEO or CNO EVER, in the years I worked there. Nurse to patient ratio was decent initially but got worse as time went on; even in the ICUs. ICU RNs have been tripled and even quadrupled, due to lack of staff. Nurses on the floors are often forced to provide primary care (especially at night) because there are often NO PCTs available to assist with care. Their COVID-19 ICU in the cath lab was a COMPLETE disaster.  PPE supply was inconsistent and charge RNs were often new grads who didn't know how to effectively perform their role. Managers on most of the med/surge units are NOT leaders. They are condescending and unprofessional. There are a number of staff nurses on any given floor who are known to be VERY lazy and unprofessional and that behavior has gone unchecked. Tube station malfunctions often. Epic downtime occurs more often than not. Morale is very low with no end in sight. There are some units with two patients to a room and the rooms are VERY tiny. There's no room to maneuver equipment and it's very aggravating.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Patients are center of what we do. Any time we do not exceed expectations is naturally stressful.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Busy with purpose. Meetings are productive and short, most are 30 minutes which speaks to efficiency and purpose.

This hospital as WHOLE works together to help the patients. This speaks volume because everyone has a duty and a role in the patient’s care. No role is too small or too big. The lab manager at Gottlieb at the time (now is the lab director) is great and has been instrumental in advocating for the lab department. It is always known that other departments (mainly nurses) always blame lab for misdoings, but as a lab tech you know that it is really hard for us to mess up the job because everything has to be regulated in a CAP lab, so when the manager backs up the lab when needed it shows that we are as competent as the rest of the hospital in doing our job. This is important because lab can be very toxic if this culture is not changed. Managers have to find solutions and work on the weakness in their own team so that moving forward mistakes do not happen and at Gottlieb we have great managers that lead by example. I miss working here. I would be here for many years if I did not move states. This is the best lab out of the three hospitals (this is a fact not an opinion). 

1) ONBOARDING: Onboarding was unorganized and stressful. Communication of steps and what to expect was nonexistent. The person/people in charge of completion of new employee tasks did not ensure everything was ordered and completed within the 4+ weeks they had before my original start date. This resulted in being without a job/salary for 1.5 weeks. 
2) JOB RESOURCES AND EQUIPMENT: For my role, two computer screens, a credentialed membership, continuing education and software are a necessity to be efficient. None of these were provided by Loyola which was not accurately disclosed during the interview process.
3) MANAGEMENT: The job outline and team structure of the position I accepted were not accurate to the actual position. Schedules were not flexible as initially stated during discussions prior to accepting the offer. There was little ability for decision making, autonomy, or the ability to use experience and skills as was proposed during the interview. Leadership lacked professionalism, integrity, positivity, and team-building skills for a positive atmosphere. There was no transparency in feedback from leadership. I personally did not receive a 30-day or 90-day evaluation to set goals and or know expectations of work and words often did not match actions.

The patient scheduling systems and insurance verification systems are antiquated and ineffective. Most is a manual process which is very timely causing delays of patient care. Email is Outlook 2010 and unsecured. Equipment is old and poorly maintained, breaking down often. Not the expectation of a university medical system. High turnover of staff. The majority of senior leaders resigned in fall of 2018 following an employee separation program targeting employees over age 50 with more than 10 years experience. The CEO also resigned. Now Loyola hires new grads without experience to save money. Not a safe patient experience. Loyola is in trouble financially and increases patient copayments to compensate. Added a “facility charge “ for outpatient procedures. Housekeeping is non existent increasing patient infection rates. Employees are expected to always be available and flexible with scheduled work hours with little notice and no additional compensation except for nurses. Nothing is done to follow through on employee satisfaction low scores.

I have over 20 years of experience at the bedside, as an agency and registry RN. There are quite a few units in this hospital, where the level of staff professionalism, is questionable and ALLOWED. On the majority of the units, there is not enough equipment or staff, to safely handle the high acuity of the patient load. For the few years thar I've worked here, staffing and lack of working equipment, remains deficient and I have ceased to mention these shortfalls again with these managers because my concerns have fallen on deaf ears.  It is unclear why the managers constantly attend daily meetings with the CEO's because appatently, the units aren't benefiting. No one in their right mind, seeks utopia at work but this (and other institutions) could at least make our shifts a bit less stressful, as we care for our patients!

I have been employed by Loyola for approximately 6 months. I have enjoyed my time here thus far. My scheduling is rotating, 3 weeks of day shift and 3 weeks of night shift nursing. I have learned vast amounts while working on both shifts. I have developed skills in several areas of critical care including, but not limited to: working with sedation, vented patients, trauma patients, patients with invasive lines, etc. All of my education took place in a fast-paced trauma I environment. 

Management is very fair and easy to approach. The management is also very fair about requested time off.  

I thoroughly enjoy the work environment, as it is conducive to learning. The other nurses are very helpful to one another which further provides a team environment. 

The hardest part of working at Loyola is the travel. It has taken me 2+ hours to get to work on several occasions which I feel is unsafe for me, especially after a nightshift.  The hospital is located off of I-290 and 55. Both routes are prone to prolonged traffic delays.

You get paid less than the industry standard working at this hospital. When I got hired most of the things I learned were on my own and you weren't really properly trained. The manager and the director of my department are both new and a bit inexperienced . They worked together at another hospital before coming to Loyola.  The department is ran by women. All women Supervisors including manager and director. Morality is low. Starting wage is $14 an hour. When you earn time in your PTO bank they make it very hard for you to use it. High turn over. Everyone wants to be the boss here in this department. You do everyone else job but barely get paid the deserved amount for your own job. Co-workers are awesome and can really change your day.  If you are in need of a job and you're really desperate apply but if you're looking for a job that is flexible with school, that will pay you you're worth for your work, that you can advance within the company look into working at another hospital because this one is not all its cracked up to be.

A typical day of work would be really stressful. A Typical Day at Work. A monotonous grind filled with repetitive tasks and little sense of accomplishment. The hours drag, and every meeting feels unnecessary.
- **What You Believe You Learned:** Not much beyond how to survive the bureaucracy. Any real learning comes from dealing with frustration rather than actual professional growth.
- **Management:** Overbearing when they shouldn't be, absent when they need to be. They micromanage the small things and ignore the big problems.
- **Workplace Culture:** Toxic and draining. Gossip spreads faster than actual productivity, and people are more concerned with office politics than teamwork.
- **The Hardest Part of the Job:** Staying motivated despite the lack of appreciation. Keeping up with unrealistic expectations set by people who don’t understand the real workload.
- **The Most Enjoyable Part of the Job:** The few moments of relief—maybe a good conversation with a coworker or the rare satisfaction of completing a task against all odds.
