When I started at Fairview (it became M Health Fairview later) I was excited to be in a job where I could see that the work I did as a Business Analyst had a direct positive impact on patient care. I thoroughly enjoyed interacting with the many Business Lines and the many different groups inside the company. 95% of the people who work here are fantastic and will go above and beyond to help you and answer your questions.

The issue lies with management. The top leaders have grand ideas and they love to send out emails that showcases where they see M Health Fairview in the next 2-5 years. However there rarely is any sort of "how" we will get there.

Very rarely will someone make a decision. Usually once all the information has been laid out, costs analyzed and impact understood, the project managers will say "We need to better understand this" or they feel the need to send it to the CIO for his approval.
People were scared to make a decision that might be viewed as "the wrong" decision later.

Fairview lost me as an employee when they started asking for volunteers to take unpaid furloughs. (the first 4-5 months of Covid) They also cut the 401k matching percentage to 1% (it already was a low percentage compared to industry average).

I didn't volunteer the first time and my manager said they didn't get enough people to volunteer. So they are asking again for volunteers. My manager said "We should probably volunteer or else it might mean we will get our jobs cut"
The second time they asked was when my new job search began...

I used to say I would recommend someone to work in Scheduling/Customer Solutions Center but after a few months, changed my mind. There are lots of calls coming in which is great because it makes the day go by quickly - BUT, understand- if you want to truly provide good customer service they don't seem to fully understand that every person or patient that calls is going to be "cookie-cut" to fit in with their metric standards. This is ultimately reflected in the high turn-around because management spends 2% of the time telling employees about what you do well and 98% of the time focusing on what they want you to do better. It's mentally draining. Again, this is reflected in the high turn-around within the Customer Solutions Center.  Any given Walmart has a higher retention rate.
It is a work from home position so there is no culture and thus expect to find creative ways to get to know your management. If they like you (it will have nothing to do with your performance) you'll maybe slightly have a chance to advance- but I'll say the line for that is already long though. Your best bet is to appreciate the good pay and hang in there as long as you can while you spend time outside of the company furthering your development. Overall rating: 5/10


M Health Fairview provides an excellent opportunity for staff to learn and develop their careers. Overall, I have learned a lot and had a good experience, however, there are several difficult components of working here. M Health expects hard work from their staff, and the patient acuity is sometimes questionable as to whether they should be in PICU on the floor. RN staffing comes and goes in waves but is generally good. Still, high acuity on the med-surg units often results in 12 hour shifts without breaks. Charge RNs are expected to take patients overnight. Often no NSTs overnight due to staffing. Benefits are excellent through the union, although expensive. Coworkers are generally kind and hardworking, but leadership can be difficult to reach. Supplies and equipment are one of the challenges the company chooses to skimp on. Our unit phones for the unit are from the 90s and the "Can you hear me now?" question is constant. The ancient IV pumps were "replaced" with "new" ones that appear shockingly similar in appearance and function. Linens are frequently out or low. Supplies are frequently out of stock or on backorder. 

I plan to leave the clinic as soon as possible.  There are some very unprofessional employees who work at the clinic.  Turn around is pretty common, probably because the longest standing techs are shallow, immature, and very two faced.  At first it seemed like a team atmosphere, but eventually you see that the long standing techs will gather up to kick out whomever they don't like.  Many great techs have been asked to join our clinic, but it seems like they know better.  The only reason I didn't quit after a certain incident is because I felt like I was the only voice for the minorities in the lab, we have a great, just, and fair clinic manager, and I care too much about my patients to let them be handled by outdated techs who need to be reeducated on proper phlebotomy, etiquette, professionalism, HIPAA, culture, adulthood, and constructive criticism.  But if the long standing techs left, this would be a great working environment with equality, laughter, enjoyment, and fulfillment of job duties.  The long standing techs just make it hard to come to work everyday.

What is the best part of working at the company?
I enjoyed working for M Health Fairview because they gave me the opportunity to work and prove my skills when no other medical clinics would. I came in to the company with couple years of experience of regular receptionist, but I had no experience in the medical field.  The manager at the New Brighton location saw what I could bring to the team and hired me.  I worked there for 9 years, and I was proud to say I worked for M Health Fairview.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
I worked 3 years front desk and then took the position of central scheduling where I was able to work remotely.  The first 4 years I really enjoyed it and had no issues, but the company started adding new task after new task and though I thought I was doing a good job (patients hung up happy) I was told I wasn't meeting their expectations.  We were expected to read more and more scripts while scheduling appointments for patients and if you didn't read it exactly the way you wanted them to, during audits you would be marked as not doing it.

The unit I worked on was post-surgical. The unit was constantly understaffed with both nurses and more commonly nursing assistants. Nursing assistants are absolutely vital to post surgical care as patients must walk four times a day. This was the only unit in the hospital that had a staffing grid that in my experience is dangerously understaffed. I feel that management and those in authority to approve staffing grid changes did not connect the complex patient population with their staffing grid or their budget. They were also 1-2 weeks behind in COVID-19 preparations related to screening and removing all visitors compared to Allina and the Va. 
The best thing they did was convert Bethesda to a COVID-19 hospital. For that they deserve high praise. So, though they were slow to begin the pandemic I feel they were able to adjust very quickly and their research is unparalleled.

My experience working here ended when I found out that coworkers were criticizing and bullying me IN A TEAMS CHAT while at work to one another behind my back. I reported it to HR and all I asked for was accountability and an apology and got neither. All I was told was that the situation was investigated and resolved though I was not told any other details. I was called pathetic and told that I should just leave (the job) because I wasn’t helpful. This is the type of environment that is fostered here and management did nothing. In fact management not only did nothing to curb the toxicity, they contributed to the criticism and bullying behind my back. I would never recommend working here and have very few good things to say about it. 

Coworkers are great but the higher ups make you feel like a number. They say the focus is the patient, all they care about is how much money is being made. We are a nonprofit organization, it’s getting to the point where the patient is being harassed about paying their bill. Fairview is calling, emailing, and texting the patient to pay their balance before a statement has been sent. Patients are confused wondering why they’re being harassed about a bill they haven’t received. At this point not only are the employees a number, the patients are now too. Upper management does not care anymore. I’ve been there for over a decade and the change in the last few years is not for the better. The new management being brought in is all about greed and when is the patient going to pay up. The employees are treated even worse. Fairview no longer cares about the well-being of their employees. It’s unfortunate because they used to be a great place to work. 

FV has literally become about the quickness of helping people rather than the quality of care being provided- in all departments. I work in the call center for billing and the training sucks.. if you get hired here make sure to read all the documents that they have available or you will literally feel thrown to the wolves after training. They have new hires coming in making the EXACT same pay as people who have been here (like myself) for years.. dont bother referring anyone because you will be told theres a bonus for it and then never get it. Management micromanages everything- this was never like this in office and now that we WFH all of them have found their very own power trips literally. Job security is there if you can handle being treated like your scum day in and out otherwise the turn around for employees is astronomical and honestly quite comical because management acts like they dont know why they cant keep people in these positions.

The management has cycled through more in the last 2 years than ever before. The management does not place staff & patient safety on a high priority. Upper manager does not care about complaints being made about understaffed units, policy is written reactively (changes are only made once JCo, OSHA, Mn Dept of health, etc. tell them they need to address issues). The work culture is very divisive - PAs vs RNs vs Management. Not a team based work environment. Upper management and CEO only care about profits (“lean” business model has been implemented by the CEO, contrary to research showing the model does not improve patient outcomes or staffing costs), not patient safety and health despite claiming a “non-profit” status. Frequent HAI, improper PPE given during peak pandemic, frequent assaults on staff (and you have to fight for compensation!). Many good coworkers, but not much other than that to speak of.
